  1. Chris,

again, the end came when Phil passed away. when he left us, the program lost its most dedicated and beloved voice.

which brings me to today's sad memory.

getting on the bus before finals in 96...on the way to win a world title. Hackman comes up to me, his eyes are all red, and he asks me to keep him away from Dan til after the show. I ask him why.

"i just got the call...Phil died"

wow. as someone who helped at Crest for two years and went to Eli's many a night before then, i felt like someone had just clocked me with a bat.

we knew if Dan knew he'd freak, and Dan, being the "slightly" superstitious creature he is, would not take it well before fianls and finals warmup.

John judged that night...he didn't know either til we told him later

    RIP Phil.

  2. Steve is aware of this thread. expect to see his bearded smiling face here soon.

I'm glad. He was one of the positive influences in my life and I'm not sure he knew that. I work with adolescents on an inpatient psych unit, and the way I relate to those kids is largely modeled on how he interacted with the kids in his drumline. He motivated me to be a better person, not just a better drummer. Isn't that what it's all about?

it sure is. and Steve is among the masters.

  3. Spence...little short kid... played toms? (well shorter than me anyway)

I remember the name, but there were way too many brain cells that left my mind in those years! (not to mention the brain cells that were missing at the time!)

Re: Dan Delong...I was personally responsible for getting him into Westshore..I seem to remember (vaguely stated) a conversation at an Indoor show:

Dan: Dude, I'll never make it in Westshore...

ME: Dude, you can make the tom line

Dan: C'mon dude, I'm not good enough

ME: yeah you are, and there's prime babes for the taking, long bus trips etc.......

    Dan: duuuuude! Surf's up!

    Or something like that! hahaha!

Flipalippy put the bug in his ear, but I was the bug! (we needed a 4th tom, and he was it!)

    ahhhh the Cruiser days.

    :P

  4. lots of reasons. first of all, new administration liked Elco's football only band. coupled with a show thwt was..well...abstract(yet successful, they won chapters) the admins pulled the plug.

the biggest thing that hurt was when Phil Hower passed away. he was the heart and soul of the band. the drumline and guard pretty much stopped after 88....lots of BS and issues about show content etc. the drumline came back out in 91, 95 and 97 and kicked ### as expected. the guard never really recovered.

  5. ah the Cedar Crest connection. Bart begat Steve who begat Dan and John ( and Chris when he got out of the service)and kenny took over when they all left after i think 88.Kenny stayed until 97, which is when they killed the marching band program.

from crest also came Andy Moyer, Chris's brother (aka Goob) mark Doll, Shane "Blossom" Thomas, Jimmy Hower, 'hot" Adam, Laura and Sarah helmuth, and i know i am missing others. crest was always a big supplier of members, as much as Mechanicsburg and CV and Red Land.

  6. i know it's tough to imagine. this was the summer after my senior year, and we did WSS for our musical(tapes of the show, which received rave reviews in many local papers...and had 4 castmates go on to win scholarships at bg name acting schools) and i knew the music inside out.

so when i saw this, it hit me like a brick....DCI East prelims. they went on right after VK. now imagine laughing your ### off for 1 minutes then this show....wow, emotional overload.

and then at finals, Sky went on before VK.

  7. Hey Jeff-

Do you have a current email address fo Steve Filipelli? I marched in one of his lines, but haven't seen him in 20 years.

    Thanks-

    LuvsPAisTe

wow which one of the zillion schools did you go to? didnt realize you were a local!

he posts here too, not as much as he used.

if you know his license plate, you know his account name.

    Drums X ?

I went to Cedar Crest (Lebanon) but I live in Los Angeles now.

Steve was a big, positive influence, and an all-around good guy. I'm lucky to have marched in one of his drumlines.

so you know Moyer, Stauffer, Hackman etc?

We set up a "family tree" of Shore percussion back around 95. Flowers begat Steve, who begat Dan and John, who begat us. Steve is lovingly called Papa because of the influence he had on many of us, even if he never formally taught us. he and John have been my mentor ofr judging, and nothing pleased me more than to see Steve get elected into the KIDA hall of Fame.

he's back with CV now...i expect another jungle show to hit KIDA soon

  8. nobody did musicals like Sky. laughter, tears, goosebumps, you name it, they manufactured it.

my personal fave is 87, closely followed by 88. WSS was just so moving...from the visual of drumline in grey, the brass split between white and black and the guard being the color. oh that guard. it wasn't your usual WSS fare, and, just 3 years after the Cadets winning WSS, it wasn't anywhere close to theirs.

and face it..krupke was the show stealer.

    vote and decide.

  9. i never really liked Sky until 85, the first of the musical years, and actually, i liked the *% Wizard better than the 86 version.

87 WSS was just awesome. i still get goosebumps to this day.

88 is so under rated, especially that drum solo.

hmm, we need a poll for pick your fave Sky ryders musical

  10. That doesn't make me feel old... the fact that you used the word "triple" does! hahaha!!!

78 tom line...Wally, Rook, Jeff and who?

Funny you should mention Jeff's little sister...I remember this picture he had once of a hermaphradite that he CLAIMED was his sister...could this be one in the same! heh heh heh!

    Rookie "talent" night, huh...

for the life of me i can't remember who the 4th was. Jim?

and yes, rookie um talent. and we um won

    ^0^.

Suzie is an adorable blonde, the kind of girl you take home to mom and have no shame doing so. i havent talked to her in years, but last i heard she was happily married.

I still see Jeff at shows, usually wearing his BD drumline tshirt circa 1994 :P
