  1. I'm just having fun with ya. Minnesota is having a bad sports year so were a bit glib right now. Jim
  2. I thought MBI stood around too much to win this year : ) ( the devil made me post this)
  3. I hear if MBI wins, Mark Dayton is chartering planes to fly them back tomorrow : )
  4. I'd be happy with top 5 and the scores. Prelims was nice, but finals would be a great!
  5. 1. "Rocky Point Holiday" 83 Cadets Hands down the greatest all time opener in my opinion. 2. "Festive Overture" 87 ? SCV 3. "Triumphant March" intro into "Ritual Fire Dance" 78 Bridgemen 4. "The Jetsons" around 86 Dutch Boy 5. "Slaughter" 75 Madison
  6. I'm not sure of the DCA ruling on corps size, perhaps someone in the know could answer your question. They did get a score both days. Jim
  7. Combined review of South St Paul and St Peter. Sat night perfect weather and a very nice crowd. Temp at 7pm around 70. Nice combined National Anthem of members from the competing corps. What a great idea ! Sunday afternoon 82 degrees and sunny and a bit breezy. Great Drum Corps weather! Vigilantes from Texas, formerly known as Frontier. About 18 brass, and a full sized perc line. Good presence from the start. Guard in baseball players outfits. Clearly there is some talent throughout the corps but the percussion line stands out. Generally good sound from the brass and visual baseball theme carried out with the guard." Don't Mean a Thing" was solid and some fun "Take me out to the ball game" music was mixed in with music from the Natural. This show would benefit from refined fundamentals and detail cleaning in all sections. I got bored in the middle. Fun sells better when it's clean. But not bad show from a developing program. I thought they were stronger in St Peter in the daylight. Guards especially seems more together and I caught a few more of baseball references throughout the show. Lakeshoreman from Troy Mich. Marching about 17 brass, 7 guard and 6 in the pit but no marching battery. Again they have some talent in the brass line but music of the Moody Blues is a bit difficult to pull off with minimal percussion. The Mid voices are relatively strong but this corps really needs to get focused during the offseason and develop a program that is within the reach of the members and the staff. What a great opportunity for an aspiring percussion instructor to get a start. The great thing about Drum Corps is the way it reminds you of some great music of days gone by. I'll have to dig out some of those Moody Blues CDs in the car. I thought they too were a bit stronger on Sunday afternoon. Govies took the field next and aggressively march their way to the front sidelines for set up. About 15 brass ( plus one hole) full battery and pit and about 10 guard. The show of Summer Seduction includes Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Lust and Hot For Teacher. Aggressively presented show full of quality details and nuances. The guard is tremendous and make smoozy fun entertaining and interesting. Great interaction with the crowd throughout. I have always been a fan of this small Corps marching within its means and philosophy and this year they have outdone themselves. Maybe their best corps ever. Talented individuals, marching and playing as one is always a good formula. Kilties took the field in a pre warm up of Auld Lang Syne and brought back good memories of the past. the show title Renaissance, La Parte Due. Another very aggressive show full of energy. Kilties have stepped up a few notches from last year in quality and quantity. The Guard , about 20, and pit are assets to the program. Visual program is a hybrid of past and present I found very entertaining. Forms and details are much better than this time last year although it got muddier as the show wore on. The end of the third movement ended with the brass line rushing to the front sideline ...a great impact. Brass line of 40 sounded like 60. The ballad "Pie Jesus" was nice but take the edge off, shape it ( leave the power in) and it could be a great moment at DCA. I'll be shocked it they don't make DCA finals this year. Strong shows both Sat and Sunday. Mn Brass. WOW. Everything is there for a championship crown. Can't control the judges or the competition, but almost everything that can be done, has been done. MBI is so good this year that even a less than perfect performance could still win them a title. The show , Nocturne, Songs for the Night is a knock out. Opening statement of Harlem Nocturne sets the stage. Powerful, aggressively smooth and holy %^$# loud. From what I can tell the drill was changed in the Kenton piece by rewriting and adding sub sets and adding a ton of visuals. Now they look like they are moving as much as they actually are. The middle of the show features wide range of tempos and style with a powerful ballad. To me the guard is absolutely outstanding. Flags and rifles are flying everywhere though out the show. I saw only one drop in each of the two shows. The true beauty (and difficulty ) of this show is how all the sections are woven together. The guard especially makes this look much easier than it is. The final portion of the show ' Night in Tunisia" is relentless, musically, and visually. The drum line has to be seen to be believed and the superb visuals are piled on faster than you can absorb them. Rewritten drill is outstanding and worthy of top 5 DCI. It's all about the details and they are all written in. I thought they were a bit stronger on Sat night and a bit flat (maybe cleaner) on Sunday. Can't wait to see how it shakes out over labor day. Jim
