Never heard of Mudvayne, but I looked them up.
The guys name didn't ring a bell.
I marched late 80s, but was in the hornline so ya never know.
we practiced seperately, our quad line could have been anyone and I might not know LOL
I read an interview in Modern Drummer w/ the Mudvayne drummer a year or so ago. Based on their ages, it probably more accurate he would have been involved in the early 90's He talked about drum corps in the interview. I haven't read it in a long time but I do believe he grew up in Rockford and was a part of the Regiment Cadets. I'm not sure if he was ever actually in the "A" corps itself.

someone labeled it incorrectly in the CCDB that automatucally recognizes song titles. I have to correct stuff like that in my ITunes when I load a new cd onto my Ipod.
-
If they are choosing to do it that weekend, that seems like it would be a big mistake since a large portion of the percussion community will be in Dayton. I know I would love to see it but I will be extremely busy with my indoor line that weekend.

I've been told that the Glassmen are something by a very familiar classical composer. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag because I know so little other than the name of the composer. I'm sure they will make the official announcement when they are ready.
-
By that logic shouldn't the Cadets have only scored a 98.825 if they were equal to the Cavies in 04? 0.125 is not a huge difference in the 12th place score.
Nobody ever said that the spread between 1 and 12 has to be the exact same. I bet if you go back and look at the top 12 scores from the last 10 years, maybe longer, that you will see same type of correlation between 12th place and first place. In 1993 Cadets won w/ a 97.4. The 12th place Colts had an 81.6. My feeling is that if the Colts had scored an 85.6, the Cadets score would have been a high 98 or low 99 range because the judge would have set a higher standard at the beginning of the competition.

I under that the placing is all the matters but what I was really trying to ask is if corps this year were just of a higher quality. And with higher quality corps that means higher scores.
Just because they got a 99.15 at finals doesn't necessarily mean they necessarily better than the Cavaliers 98.7 from 2004. The 12th place corps in 2004 scored a 85.950 while 12th place in 2005 got an 86.075. Since those scores typically set the trend for scoring the rest of the night, its definitely not out of the question the the Cadets would have scored higher than the Cavaliers in 2004.
I guess my point is that you can't necessarily compare the Cadets to any previous champions because they didn't compete head to head on the same night. I would say that it is the whole activity that caused their score to be what it was. Everytone else was better in the eyes of the judges so the Cadets were rewarded for being the best of the best.
-
Just because the Cadets got a 99.125, does that really mean that they were that good. Or does it mean that all the other corps were good and they had to give higher scores due to that. Since if you know there are later corps that you can't give out high scores.
You tell me......was it the cadets or the whole activity?
I've always firmly believed its the placement that matters, not the number.
Judges basically set the trend based on the first group they see. If hey give the first group a 90, then they only have 10 points play with in case the next 11 groups are better. If they give the first group an 85, they have 15 points to work with.
They basically set the standard with the first group and then determine if each successive group is this many points better. Sometimes judges have trapped themselves into a perfect 10.

When I intially auditioned for the Cadets for the '98 season, We had individual auditons and individual meets w/ the staff at camp. Since I tried out for bass drum, I met w/ Steve Keiffer and Tom Aungst and they basically cut you, gave you a spot, or invited you to the next camp. I attended the first 2 camps and was invited back to the third.
I decided that flying to NJ each month was a bit out of my budget so drove to the third Glassmen camp w/ a friend of mine. At the end of that camp, the bass tech basically walked up to us and said "Unless anyone quits, you guys are the bass line." I technically never had a formal audition for them that year. I just kind of walked in and they gave me the spot after watching me play for 15 minutes. The line was pretty much set at that point so I never did learn exactly how they handled the audition process.

Not to play devil's advocate here but didn't the Troopers get in trouble w/ DCI for owing less money that this?
I know the situations are different because of the IRS paperwork but I would think DCI would also have an interest in knowing what kinds of loans a group has going to keep itself afloat.

I don't know if it's just my area, but I doubt it is a lot. I live in Michigan and have marched in 2 of the 3 PIW lines here as well as teaching, and I can't think of a single person I know hwo goes to PASIC.
I have been to several conventions. There are typically several thousand people who come. I don't know the exact figures but it is well worth it for the educational experience alone. The amount of clinics they have combined with the opportunity to meet and talk w/ the top educators and performers in the world can't be beat.
-
dont forget...they give the award to Div II/III corps as well...one of the years I marched in Division III (1996)...our corps won the award.
I totally forgot about that.
-
Glassmen also did it in '95 and '96 But they actually paused for the corps announcement and drum major salute so the recordings of the show always sound like it started in a weird place.
-
I'm still waiting for confirmations on the Southwind one, as well as the answer to my question about Glassmen '98, '99, and '01...
Well, I can confirm that there were no cheesy body movements in '98. I think our show was pretty straight forward with little flash. just strong playing.

Sigh.
I marched the Northern Aurora Kansas show.
The closer, which was part of Magnum Opus, was/is the only tune I dug out of the whole show.
Don't you cry no more. Indeed.
I'll always think that the Blue Devils should play music by the Grateful Dead - Blue For Allah, Terrapin Station, Cryptic Envelopment, maybe Stella Blue for a Ballad. It would be a show I'd LOVE to hear them chop up. Also, I think it could be a marketing blitzkrieg with cool t-shirts and posters...... man. Oh, and their show would have to be called The Grateful Dev's.
Phish could be cool.. Divided Sky.. Fluffhead.. Guyute.
Have you heard Trey's orchestral version of Guyute?
Amazing stuff.

One more thing, what happened to a corps that was 99 percent from Bergen County (Garfield, NJ Cadets) If that was not clear. They did that on their 3 Peat.
If they were 99 percent from Bergen County during their 3-peat. I must know the 1 percent that wasn't because he was from Tennessee.
Edit: nevermind, I got my years mixed up. The person I know wasn't during the 3peat years, he was member in '87.

Gold shield on my right leg above my ankle. Its probably about 3 or 4 inches tall.

Good luck to all auditioning.
The Glassmen were the greatest experience I've ever had in my life. It truly is "An Experience of a Lifetime"

I miss having DCM while on tour. We rehearsed in Dekalb stadium several times. Almost got hit by a tornado there.
I miss prelims and finals.
I miss the social day and the tug of war competition.
In '96, there were around 30 Div III corps in prelims. When I was with the Glassmen in '98, there were probably less than 15. Its sad how that show became less significant over the years, even before DCI took over the open class corps.

I haven't read every post in this thread but I'm sure there are a few noteworthy drumline visuals that belong in this category.
I know we had one in the '98 bass line that got closeups in quarters and semis videos but was nowhere to been seen on the finals videos.

I'm not exactly sure how they do things right now. I believe they still muffle the same way we used to. (one full ring of foam around each drum) I was there during the Yamaha years.
I believe our tech used to tune from the top down. Its been so long its hard to remember but he may have tried to match specific pitches as well. He did have perfect pitch so he was definitely very conscious of making sure all of the lugs were in tune.
As far as Dynasty goes, I believe the tuning they used was fairly similar. I know the bass tech marched either around the '01-'02 range. It was really hard to tell in places though because the Dynasty drums don't seem to project as well as the Yamaha's we used to have when I was there.
-
starting from the top is a very bad choice. You will end up having waaaaay waaay too much crank on that drum, and your bottom end will sound week.
work from the bottom up. That's the technique that I learned. (Used in 2002/2003 Blue Devils. 2004 sac Freelancers. 2004-2005 Blue Devils "B")
But, do whatever ya want. they are your bass drums.
I prefer starting top to prevent that exact scenario. By placing the top drum at a comfortable level, I go downward from there.
The key is where you place the 1 drum. Obviously, if you reef the 1 drum, your tuning may be too high. Stop your self from over cranking and you will be fine.

Pioneer was the first to use Dynasty with a sponsorship/promo type thing (92-93
I never saw Pioneer back then but I do know that Northern Aurora also used Dynasty drums from '92 until they folded after '96.

Oh my goodness gracious!

Tony Royster is around 20-21 years old now and put out his own instrctional video with Dennis Chambers while he was still in high school.

The biggest reason for the fall in membership in my opinion, is that people use KK to get dci div. 1 experience, so they can bolt to BAC or even Magic or wherever. Last year we lost upwards of 15 horn players and guard to magic, some within weeks of our move in.
How is this possible? Does DCI no longer enforce their corps hopping policy? if I remember right, you used to not be able to jump corps after a certain date without a signed release from the corps director clearing you from doing so.

If anything Phantom of the Opera is the most cliched show ever. Even more than West Side Story.
