  1. I have heard people say they prefer the foam on the inside and I understand how easy it can be to use, I just like the look of a full ring of foam around the head. I know its sort of weird but its basically the same reason why people play traditional grip, just because they like the look of it.

I can't remember the brand right off the top of my head but I believe its the Scotch 77 spray adhesive works wonders.

  2. I typically do 1-m3-2-m3-m3-3-p4-4-p5-5

but tha5t was on bigger drums, ill change it up since we're getting newer ones.  Either way, ill use the P5 between 4 and 5 to get that definitive THUMP

I pretty much follow the interval structure here.

Some times I'll only go a perfect 4th between the 4 and 5 drums. I don't do the muffling the way the article states though. I like to use a complete ring of foam around the edge of each head. I still place all of the foam on the outside of the head.

  3. That's not neccessarily true. The Pacificaires from the Vancouver, B.C. area of Canada compete every year at WGI World Champs. They haven't made it to the finals yet, but they still attend every year. I'm on an Independant A guard that is their rival at nearly every competition here in the Pacific Northwest, and if their members are over 22, that isn't fair to me at all! (I'm 20 and plan on staying in for the next two years). If, when I reach 22, I have to be forced to move to find and audition for an IW guard (which is nearly impossible as I am in the military and Northern Lights is only accepting males anyway) and then the girls in Pacificaires can stay in merely because of this new rule, how does that even out the competition floor? To me, personally, this is total BS! Did they even take into consideration the guards in this area that this would be completely unfair to us? I know that I have pretty much no say in the matter, but I feel like I am basically getting told, "You have to quit in two year, but see those girls over there? There's no age-out limit for them." Whatever, I don't make the rules, I guess. I just have to live by them.  <**>

Just to clarify. This rule change is for percussion only. It has no bearing on color guards whatsoever. WGI color guards have completely different sets of rules than the percussion area. At WGI percussion finals, there were no Canadian groups. I may be wrong but I believe that the last time a Canadian group attended WGI percussion finals was in 2002.

  4. I think it should go to the same rules as the guard.  Personal opinion here but whats the problem with having a venue for all age people to compete and have fun with indoor?!?!  I say we all create a canadian line, kick arse and really put some heat on the board to switch it to an all age venue from now on.  Whos with me?!?!

I think the general intent of WGI is to remain a youth activty in the same way as DCI is a youth activity. Certain concessions were made for international groups simply because their music education systems are vastly different than what occurs in the US. Many countries do not have any type of formal music education in their schools system.

Aimachi from Japan is actually a religious group. To my knowledge all members of that group are members of that church and that is how they receive their musical education. Obviously a church is not limited to certain age ranges like the American school systems are.

There are many people involved with the WGI percussion side that feel eliminating the age limt would be detrimental to to the activity. Even though it is a stereotype, there is a certain truth that drummers don't want to "grow up" and "move on with their lives" so to speak. Don't get me wrong. I'm 28 years old and would love to march again but if everyone continued to march, then there would be less quality instructors in the activity.

From what I have been told, the reason WGI eliminated the age limit for color guards was due to the fact that they were experiencing a decline in their activity among the amount of performers and groups competing. The WGI percussion side is continually growing year by year and really has no reason to change their rules to be like the color guard side.

They are to allow all international independant lines to have no age limit competeing agenst the 22 and under US lines!?  does this mean that there could be an allstar line from canada?  If so anyone want to start a line from Canada and make WGI change the rules for good so they are similar to the guard rules?  And why was the rule for eliminating the agelimit withdrawn?  Perplexed and looking for answers...

As someone who attended the WGI advisory board meetings, I wouldn't expect the age limit to be removed from percussion anytime soon. The reason for the rule change was to help encourage more participation from international groups that allow over age members due to differences in their culture or education system. The decision to make it all Non US groups instead of non North American groups was more or less decided because there currently are no Canadian groups that attend WGI Finals.

If a bunch of Canadian groups pop up with aged out US members, I'm sure WGI will take the necessary steps to prevent that from happening. I hope everyone respects the spirit of the rule that was established.

  6. My school wants to start an indoor line but we only have outdoor drums.  One method i've heard, is stretching a t shirt over the rim before you put the head on to take away the ring of the drums.  We don't have the cash to buy indoor mallets/sticks so money is a factor!  any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Something we did for 1 year in college for the bass drums was to stretch 100% cotton sheets underneath the bass drum heads. They have to be 100% cotton and pulled tight against the head or it will sound like a rubber bouncy ball when you hit the drum.

  7. Wow, I'm stunned that I'm hearing good things about the evans bass heads.  Seriously, from everyone I've ever talked to (and my own opinion) I think they do not project well at all.  I agree they are low maintenance and that the muffling system is good for those who dont have the money or experience with muffling to go for the remo and all the foam.  But if you stand 20 yards away from an Evans bass line... it just doesn't do it for me.  Off topic, but who in the top 12 uses evans?

    -chris

The Evans bass heads are quality. I still prefer the Remo Emporers and the old school muffling technique but I used the Evans heads once w/ a high school line I taught. They had horrible Premier drums w/ no projection whatsoever. Those heads w/ proper tuning will sing.

  8. so the best heads r, Evans,Remo SMooth White Emporer, and those foamy things on the outside....gotcha...thanks:)

BY THE WAY does anyone know what marching bass mallets Carolina Crown uses?.....they look like Vic Firth's old black models

                                                              woot!:-D

I can't speak for Crown but I never liked the Vic Firth mallets w/ the black shafts. I used them in college and they were hard to grip. The coating they used on the shafts just didn't absorb sweat and moisture like the natural wood finish does.

Another tip for placing foam on the outside of the head is to use 3M spray adhesive. Unlike silicon caulking glue, it will keep the foam in contact with the head.

  9. The Dynasty heads are probably nothing more than unlabeled Remo Ambassador heads. I believe its the same thing for the Yamaha heads.

I like the Evans heads but the muffling system on the inside of the head is a pain to deal with. I personally prefer the Remo Smooth White Emporer w/ a complete ring of foam around each head.

  10. i hear from a lot of people the same things ive been reading about dynastys, how they fall apart quickly, they dont project well (especially the bass drums).

i watch bd's bassline and their technique calls on a lot of swinging, it seems like theyre really using a lot of sound quality in their strokes and for some reason they dont project as much as they seem they should. and #### does bd's bassline have chops!

I teach a drumline that has Dynasty drums. I don't really like how they project either. Being a bass drummer by nature, I would attribute their lack of projection to the fact that that there is only 1 air vent built into each drum.

My college drumline used Ludwig drums (which only have 1 air hole as well) and we were constantly told to play louder. We fixed that by drilling a couple of small 1/2 inch holes in the shells of each drums. After that, we never had another sound projection problem again. I'm very tempted to do this for these Dynasty drums.

I may be wrong about this but I believe that Pearl bass drums have 6 air holes in them and I think Yamaha has 4 built into their basses.

  11. You need a good neoprene adhesive.  3M makes a good one.

I used 3M Super 77 Multi Purpose Adhesive on my bass drums last season and its still holding today w/ one small repair to the 5 drum.

FYI in case anyone cares, I use 1 ring completely around the rim of the head on every drum and the sizes of the high school line I teach is 18, 20, 22, 24, 28.

  12. Here they are for anyone who hasn't seen them. As you can see, this compatition was won by my alma mater, Morehead State.
