  1. 1. Crown is very good. They have one of the prettiest brass sounds around. Maybe it's the Lutheran in me talking. Too bad they alienated so many with the Donnie & Marie act. 2. Crossmen and Magic have cleaned up their shows more than I ever thought they could. Too bad the slots were already set. 3. The Glassmen are doing everything possible to reach out to their supporters. The Beth and Rod show is really working. 4. Carmen is the best Madison show I've ever seen. Period.
  2. Yes, I did live in Canada for 5 years.
  3. I thought today's average DCP poster was 2 1/2 in 1996. :P
  4. Southwind's location is posted on the home page of their website.
  5. Yesterday on the way to Allentown, Sirius had a great quote from Richard Wagner on their Classic Voices channel (for those of you who don't have Sirius, get it if you can). Classic Voices features a major Opera each month, and the August choice is Flying Dutchman. During the month, they have short historical segments about the opera. So Wagner was quoted as saying that to make opera great he would "write what no performer wanted to sing and no audience wanted to hear." Next train to Foxboro leaving on track 29
  6. I don't understand what's so "progressive" about adding woodwinds to drum and bugle corps. Am I a reactionary for not wanting a piano in an A Cappella chior or brass in a string band? Holy Mummers Batman :sshh:
  7. For the people who spent a much longer time there than I, thanks! Besides, there was always an express lane between Garfield and Hempstead for writers and instructors. A final note, the "Best junior corps in DCA" title was a source of pride for Sun. That work ethic propelled them to 6 DCA championships, and they're not done yet.
  8. I don't get the dichotomy. If the question is about breaking away from the veterans' organizations the answer is DCA, followed by DCI. To tailor the answer for a specific discussion group is historical denial. It would be like saying that John Sasso, Frank Dorritie, George Tuthill, and Bobby Hoffman hadn't made a name in Sr. corps before going to Garfield in 1969.
  9. How could you?!? On the week of Myron Florn's passing.
  10. Your DCI bias is showing. DCA was founded in 1964, recognized the World Open winners (Hurricaines) as champions that season and held their 1st official championship in 1965 (Reading Buccaneers). There are also several DCA corps who have switched to Bb/F. but Bristol will still be LOUD b**bs
  11. First off, how can I attack your education. We went to the same institution, and I too graduated with honors (US History). But you've got to admit that the post I responded to had its fair share of typos. It might also interest you to know that I spent one season in the administration of your corps 25 years ago, where I developed a tremendous respect for Robbie Robinson. I guess that's where I don't get a lot of your logic. Maybe it's because I'm third generation in this activity and grew up admiring my dad and his contemporaries like Robbie. Maybe it's the history background where things evolve and each generation's accomplishments give way to the next. Nonetheless, some of your comments struck me as basically hiking your leg on those who came before you. I couldn't imagine taking that approach to the Harold Robinsons or Bob Erwins of this activity (let alone the late Harvey Ford). I also take exception to your careless characterization of DCA corps. The "Sun76" part of my screen name is in tribute to my too-short stay with the Sunrisers of that year. I went there because of the history of innovations: 1st female guard members in DCA; 1st playing female in DCA competition; 1st keyboard instruments in DCA (same year as Boston in VFW) and these things were done unilaterally without rule changes. I had the opportunity to play "Procession of the Nobles" in 1976 (a piece Sun had played since 1969). I don't think your image of DCA shows due historical recognition of corps like the Sunrisers, Reading Buccaneers, and many others. To help with the math, I'm 55. My daughters are 30 and 9.
  12. Didn't Mark Twain say that "figures lie and liars figure"?
  13. Was that: Dancing electronic snipers or Dancing, Electronic, Snipers? I'll take more of the former, please.
  14. I just don't get the generational warfare mode. The difference between us is that I've been your age and you apparently haven't been mine. I feel fortunate to still be here, but in no way superior to you for it. I have a 4 year old grandaughter who probably thinks of you as older than dirt. It's all relative as it should be. I hope your spelling and punctuation isn't indicative of today's education standards.
  15. Sean - This is a drum corps forum not a political or ethnic or religious one. I'd really appreciate it if you'd take the political statement off your signature. As I've noted before, the South, where we both apparently have roots, was also the only region to have 2 presidents impeached. Hey moderators - when you close threads you often cite wasted bandwith. How about checking out some of these gargantuan signature blocks.
  16. Of course you realize that DCI was itself a protest about the status quo forced on the activity by the veterans' organizations. It only took the "progressive" junior corps crowd 8 years to recognize the reality that DCA acknowledged in 1964. But, hey, you spent $1,000 this year so I defer to you. DCA is part of the activity and has as much to offer as DCI. As to "old fogeys", I'd bet there will be quite a few 16 year-olds very happy at the DCA championship when their corps wins (whoever that may be). Do yourself a favor and fork over another lump of cash and go to Scranton. I'd bet you've never been and it might just broaden your horizons. As to getting older; if you're lucky you will. There might be some who would feel equally lucky if you don't.
  17. Translation: I don't agree with him/her so make them disappear. Is banning them from DCP enough? Do you really think you are so ENTITLED that you can live free of dissent? I'm sorry, but there are so many really horrible comparisons to your mindset that it's frightening.
  18. Well, Elmo it looks like some interesting logic here. First, the people that ESPN II might bring in (which will hopefully be more than the dedicated fans of televised curling) won't know anything about a "progressive movement". Since they have no basis for comparison they'll take things at face value. If they like it in sufficient numbers, they (and we) will be back. If not, it's Plan C for DCI. Maybe in 5 years the championship will be on Aurora Public Access TV hosted by Wayne and Garth.
  19. Speech is still free, but I'd ask people to think before fueling the fire. I've seen thin-skinned, can't-take-a-joke responses to the main stream media backfire big-time. We don't need to give someone a reason to lampoon the activity on the eve of the championships. Of course speech if better understood if spelled correctly.
  20. Although a Don Ellis concert would have been a close second (particularly THAT Don Ellis concert). Probably wasn't anyone sober on either side of the stage (which is one reason that the great Mr. Ellis left us so young).
  21. That's how I read it too. Few people in Boston don't speak drum corps. And we do like loud
  22. Gee, and the recaps had the visual captions very solid. Maybe it was the cameraman who couldn't cover. :P
  23. SW 79.00! What was in that Mascoutah water????? Keep it up!
