I always thought World class should be earned and not given.

Please in the top 18-20 in Indy and you are a World Class corps.

Once you were in, it does not mean you can't fall out.

It would make things a little more competitive and interesting.

I'm just uncomfortable tethering organizational stability and funding with on-field performance in a youth circuit.  I think DCI has the right idea in raising the bar for how member orgs must conduct themselves financially, and *that* should be the criteria for inclusion.

Madison is looking at finishing 17th or 18th out of the World Class Corps. If SCV was on the field that would push Madison as low as 19th. If SCVC was on the field, Madison could have finished 20th or worse. I feel like I was sold out by the guys in charge. It wouldn't be so bad if the move had made a positive difference, but this is just embarrassing.
    Boston's vs Madison's.

So... because they may finish 17th, they should rebrand the organization and give up their World Class membership?

Gotta be honest, I think I've read every single post of every single annual Madison thread, and the drumbeat that never ends is, Madison is bad, the board should be fired, the corps should be dissolved, rebranded and the earth sown with salt, because...

    1) They don't make Finals anymore;

    2) They fired Jim Mason, that made them not make Finals anymore; and

    3) They made it harder to become a member so people mad at 1 and 2 can't easily vote the board out, and those alumni now have a strained relationship with the organization.

That's about it.  Even the admission of women came and went with relatively minor waves.

Now, #3 there actually *is* something a little eyebrow raising from an organization perspective.  However, many other corps had much higher barriers for participation; Madison was kind of an outlier in that regard.

They actually seem like a fairly well run corps off the field.  Is it really just about the on-field product?

Cavaliers Medical Health and Wellness team is a joke.  How can the Cavaliers be the only World Class corps doing a standstill?   Members must not be following basic hygiene procedures.  It is time to call out those that are responsible for this.

That's not quite how this works.

  4. Drumline is amazing this year.  It does feel like they kind of skimped on the brass book - lots of segments given over to the battery, and that's a new thing for Cadets.  Not bad necessarily, just new.

For the uniforms, they've definitely grown on me, though I would have like to have seen warmup pants rather than shorts and leggings.  As a former AAU parent, I think they don't look as good in that setting either...

All in all, this is a good vehicle for them, and I hope they keep pushing this design philosophy forward.  It's fairly unique among their peers, and they have a distinct identity.

When the Cadets hornline actually plays, they sound tremendous and the music is fantastic. When they aren’t playing, which seems like half the show, I’m bored out of my skull waiting for them to come back in. Doesn’t exactly make for an enjoyable drum corps show as a whole. How did the designers drop the ball so bad on this one?

I get where you're coming from - but as a drummer, Cadets drumline is friggin' awesome, and I'm okay with it.

Someone with more knowledge please jump in and help me out here in case I am incorrect on anything...............

But my understanding is that since SOA did not perform last year, they aren't in any "Grouping or Tier" to start this season.

If you noticed, Spirit AND Cascades have went on first at every show so far this season. And they both did not field a show last year. Spirit did go on last at the Douglasville GA show, but I am assuming that was their home show and the reason.

It's my understanding that after San Antonio, corps will perform in reverse order of placement from San Antonio.

So for example, if SCV was to return in 2024, they should be performing in the first time slot, since they didn't perform in 2023.

Sounds legit; that's how it was handled in the past.  That said, I am virtually certain SCV will get a pass on this one.

Don't let them let the scores get to them. They don't matter. They're not going to remember the scores in twenty years. They're going to remember that hey, they put a #### good show on the field that helped them bring Cavies and Cavie fans from all generations together.

Totally agree - this is one of my *favorite* shows of the summer.  It's traditional and clever at the same time, with a crazy athletic corps and a drumline from Hades, and I appreciate the heck out of it.  I can guarantee I'm going to rewatch this one more often than I am some of the medallists.

  8. PBS will not show anything in the Saturday night slot that would pre-empt their existing lineups.  That's part of why they cut DCI in the first place - British mysteries draw an order of magnitude more viewers.  Plus, DCI had an unsavory reputation with PBS of donors making pledges and then not following through.  That ship, sadly, has long sailed.

But yes, their book is crazy and the fact they are achieving it at the level they are is even crazier. And it's not like the other groups don't have great books either but still. Can't wait to get in front of that line again in a lot.

I collect a *lot* of DCI drum music/scores for funsies and to have stuff to play around at home on, and I have to say, there's a massive gulf in degree of difficulty between the top lines and everyone else.  It's pretty clear that when corps recognize they have a talented and veteran battery, they tend to twist the difficulty knob up to 11.

Welcome to the modern USA nanny state.  I honestly don't get holding organizations, when they take prudent measures, need to be lambasted over adult individuals that do bad things that, it the world of reality, no one can stop 100% of the time.  It would be like chasing a fart in a whirlwind.  I mean even BEYOND any contract you sign you (the adult individual) are still held to the letter of the law regardless.

As a risk manager, I am absolutely professionally convinced the only thing preventing the end of the touring model as we know it is that there hasn't been a court case requiring its examination.

  11. Got to hear Cadets for the first time the other night, from an earlier season performance.  I like this program!  It definitely makes a lot of musical sense, and while it's drum heavy, the whole program relies on pulse and groove, and that makes it very friendly to follow.  Will have to go back and watch the video next to see how the visual matches it.

I mean directors and admin that do day to day after seasons are paid. We've seen the books and how much corps directors make. Yeah it's open class but still have to make a decent amount. Ive taught/directed WGI for 10 years under a nonprofit and made $500 total and that was for writing drill for 2 seasons 🤣

Having worked in Open Class, there are probably 5 or fewer OC directors that make "decent" money.  😞

It's absolutely a labor of love for those folks.
