  1. i hate those freakin valves. the third one always stuck during the ballad and made me sound like a dying cow. i remeber once i actually during the show had to grip the third valve and pull it up. thing is i always cleaned that freakin baritone inside out. you could lick that thing. you would probably die because of the vavle oil but you really could lick it if there wasnt any valve oil and i swear it wouldnt taste like anything. i dunno whats the big deal about yamaha baritones. they sound good. thats about it.
  2. well i play baritone so an open throat is something that i cant help playing with. ive seen myself play and my neck expands like a frog. its pretty funny looking. i still get them though. maybe i am abnormal. much respect to all lead trumpets. i cant imagine the pain.
  3. yeah i get the same thing and im on lead BARITONE. o that ballad. o christ. it hurts. but its sort of i guess a good kind of pain? is there such a thing? all i know is if my head doesnt hurt, i didnt play hard enough.
  4. F horn definately. the partials are way too frickin small. much respect to all french horn players out there.
  5. alot of corps use a schilke 51d or 52d. i know ppl who start on those. when i started playing t-bone back in 6th grade, i started on a bach 12c. and i worked my until i got onto the huge 1 1/2G i use now. im not gonna tell you what to use bcuz im not qualified to. ask your band director. im glad for your attitude
  6. blue juice blue juice blue juice blue juice. do i need to say it again? ok blue juice. that is the best stuff ever. keeps the casings from getting so dirty. but yeah follow the rules for oiling valves. take em out wipe off and juice to your hearts content. dont be lazy and shove it into the little hole in the bottom. it smells good. it smells really good. my valves always smell like blue juice and they always will until i stop using the horn. as for the grease, i dont think it matters all as long as it is done often enough. all of them work pretty well. even the generic ones. BLUE JUICE :)
  7. just curious. why do band directors tell you not to do corps? and is it really possible for them to stop you if you really wanted to do it?
  8. work hard. dont get intimidated out of playing baritone cause you dont think you can hold it up. dont get intimidated out of playing trumpet or mello cuz you dont think you can handle the range. every horn has its difficult aspects so it really doesnt matter which you choose in terms of the work you will have to put in to master it. just work hard and eventually you will get it. private lessons are a good thing to look into. believe in yourself and dont let anybody color your opinion of an instrument. play something you want to. not something you think would be easier to handle. they are all equally difficult.
  9. i take it you are marching next year. listen if you work hard you CAN make a D1 corps. its all how bad you want it. if you work your a## off during your senior year you can do whatever you want. march wherever you want to march. march somewhere you WANT to march. dont just go to d2 or 3 just cuz you don't think you can make a d1. what, are you just gonna sit on your @ss and stroll into a d2 or 3 audition? thats not fair to them. its also disrespect if you think about it. thinking you dont have to be good to be in their hornline. (BTW dont take my comments too harshly. i tend to be a little blunt but i dont mean to belittle you or anything.::no disrespect::) HARD WORK=do w/e you want.
  10. bach 1 1/2 g. those are awesome mouthpieces i think. every time i tell someone i play on one of those theyre like whoa you're a freak. but i like it. i play bass t-bone also so not switching mouthpieces helps keep my embochure constant. It also gives a huge sound and the lower register is truly gorgeous. (you can play as loud as you want and still have a good tone ::its heaven::) Yes i can still play high. I must be the only person on earth who doesn't like schilke anything. I have to switch to a 52d cuz thats what theyre makin us play on but i know its gonna be a b*** switchin from a bigger mouthpiece to a smaller one but it has to be done.
  11. yeah jupiter sucks. i havent played on them long enough to know anything about their reliabilty but i have played on a couple of them and getting a decent sound out was tough. ackward thing to have to play on. i dont think i would ever be comfortable playing on one.
  12. i have a pea shooter bach t-bone that i never play anymore. I usually play on a bach strad 50BLG. (bass bones are for big boys) and i also play on a yamaha YBH301M Baritone although im ashamed of it. i swear yamaha makes awesome concert euphs but i dunno if they gave any thought whatsoever to their marching baris. If any of you guys have one then you feel my pain. the valves are a mile long compared to king and dynasty. Seriously they could have taken about a half inch off of the valve height and nothing would be lost except frustration. They are the only company i know who uses plastic valve guides instead of metal ones. Dumb idea i think. (i dunno plastic tends to...break). AND the weight distribution on those things are pointless. they look smaller than dynasty's and kings but they feel twice as heavy. the only good thing is they sound pretty good. yamaha should have given a bit more thought to the design. pain is the ace.
