  1. A note from Denise B you would all be interested in...

Thank you for your donation to The Cadets this year. As a non-profit performing arts organization that relies on in-person events, 2020 seemed almost impossible earlier this year. Yet, thanks to your generosity, we were able to not only continue to operate, but to use this year to lay a strong foundation for our organization for many, many years to come.

Unlike many other corps, The Cadets have continued to hold regular rehearsals for our members throughout 2020, giving them a constant “normal” and a sense of purpose and camaraderie in a year filled with so much uncertainty and isolation.

On the management level, our Board of Directors has used this year to set up strategic committees that meet regularly to help guide us forward in the areas of Health and Wellness, Equality and Inclusion, Performing Arts Education, Governance, and Finance.

This holiday season, I wanted to say a personal think-you for your gift to our organization in 2020. We are so grateful, and we are actively working to steward all funds raised in the best way possible as we provide safe, enriching experiences for our young performers.

We have a big announcement coming on Christmas Day, so I invite you to stay tuned for some exciting news from The 2021 Cadets.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, healthy and joyous holiday season,

This subject is absolutely on topic.

Many a man back then was unceremoniously evicted by his wife, significant other, friends and/or family for grievances related to his obsession with drum corps.

I don't know where Felix marched, but his over-the-top OCD fastidiousness would have been SOP in many a corps. Just consider some of the now quaint and outdated elements of the activity in those halcyon times: Inspection, Tics, FM 22-5 Drill and Ceremonies requirements, silence on the field, tempo restrictions, flag code...etc.

Felix Unger's personality was perfectly suited to drum corps, neurotic to a fault.

'Scuse me while I go polish my white bucks.

Did Felix Unger march in Buccaneers?  Was he woke?  Did "woke" exist as a term back then?  Was the phrase back then actually "He's hip, he's cool, he's 45!"

If this is off topic, there are throngs of forum members who will report it to the moderators only to have this post removed.

...and we will once again have absolutely nothing to talk about on this forum.

I think he marched with Neil Pert.

Just a thought to consider.  Texas has what's called the "8 hour rule" which limits the amount of rehearsals you can have outside of the school to 8hrs for the calendar week.  Monday-Sunday, 8 hours TOTAL rehearsal time allowed outside of the school day.

Groups like Marcus, LD Bell, Duncanville, Westfield, Spring, Vandegrift, Reagan, Leander, Cedar Park, Johnson, Churchill (I'm just trying to think of the groups that have attended and placed well at BOA Grand Nationals in the past).  These groups have done what they've done in significantly less time than the groups they are competing against nationwide.

IMO, if BOA ever decided to move Grand Nationals to Dallas, San Antonio or Houston, we would see a SIGNIFICANTLY different finals line up and several groups that are perennial finalists would be done on Friday.  The actual Grand Nationals takes place in San Antonio the week before. It's an amazing line up of bands.

Add The Woodlands, Flower Mound, and Round Rock to your list. 6A State Finals are every other year (rotation for state finals here), but if Texas could come every year... BOA Finals would look very different. The programs here are wildly efficient and the kids here are trained and compete at a high level from MS through HS. UIL gets grief from time to time, but the system does create wonderful programs.

My opinion based on... well... my opinion.

    1. Texas

    2. Indiana/OK

    3. California

    3. Florida

    4. IL/MI/OH/KY

DCI actually has a member survey that maps all of this our every year, along with out great info for them.

well if i am a corps, and by march when everything shut down, there was stuff that had happened, so the corps should keep the funds for that. But for everything post March, refund or hold if the kid said they wanted to stay in 2021

A large number of the corps continued learning, virtually, for months after March.

From the PBS perspective I thought the top groups were amazing, and certainly Garfield was a big WOW! This really was their era. Their show in 82 gave us a glimpse of where they were heading. The 1983 expanded on that and their brass line was exceptional. The intricacy of music to movement and the complexity of timing and artistry was stunningly different from what we had seen in the late 70s and early 80s. Choosing to perform Bernstein's Mass along with Rocky Point Holiday was a bold move.

BD and SCV were truly fantastic as always. I liked Phantom better in 84. Madison was great!

Here are the semifinal scores. Garfield did not jump from 3rd to first. They were the leaders coming into Finals week and maybe lost only 1 show all season. But at Semis they did tie BD for 2nd and SCV was 1st.
