Another 2 words of trivia for you that season: “first read”. Yes, it was his first read of BD for 2008. Got caught in odd places. I was on the sideline slightly losing my mind. And we all know that .1 from anyone that year was a BD win .

That being said, Jeff is one of the/if not THE finest percussion judges out there.

  2. All corps have synthetic keys. Some practice with those and play with wood and some use synthetic keys for everything. But every corps that has a set of wooden keys for each marimba also has a set of synthetic keys that is impervious to moisture.

ah, Michael. 'tis not necessarily true!

2 sets yes, but no synthetics here rolleyes.gif

  3. Hey John,

I think that several are pointing out that the remote operation of the mix is illegal. The 2010 DCI Contest Rules, Under 4.3.1 (4th paragraph), state:

"The board cannot be adjusted via remote control. It must be adjusted with the use of a corps member or a member of the competing’ corps team. The “sound person” may or may not, speak to a corps representative in the stadium, in the stands, and via phone or wireless device."

So it is clearly stated, NO remote operation of mix. That would include via iPad, iPhone, etc. That would be "remote control" of the mix, as shown in the Yamaha video. Cell phones can be used to communicate "to a corps representative". Please, don't try to argue that your mixer is now considered a corps representative, and that you speaking to him/her/it ;o)

The only memo sent out (2009) was that staff members need to TEXT, not talk, since it was a nuisance for audience members. " I SAID, TURN THE DJEMBE DOWN AAAAH!!!"...

We can get into a philosophical argument about IF remote operation should be legal, but that's not what a few (Roosevelt, etc) are getting at in this thread.

And someone HAD to bring up the Jabba laugh...

  4. So you're confirming that the Blue Devils used an illegal electronic effect in their DCI championship routine.

Geeeeeez hold on! Stirring the pot, are we?

I would love to know where you get your information in regards to "an illegal electronic effect"? That is your opinion, obviously. Here is the fact. I have provided you with a link below to the DCI electronics guidelines:

    http://members.cox.net/jimwunderlich/DCIamplification.pdf

Nowhere does it state that effects processors are illegal, therefore the vocal effect was completely legal. Do you think that any corps that uses effects (quite a few) didn't check the rules before implementing the effect(s)?

Sure, we could debate back & forth on why DCI should or shouldn't allow effects, but the bottom line is that these are the current rules. Judging from the poll on this post, it seems that not very many people noticed our "Jabba" anyway, which was the intent.

    Thanks for listening :)

  5. Besides that, I think SCV would be stupid to get rid of Mike Jackson and gang. They took the leftovers from the miserable 11th place(in drums) '05 line and brought them to 6th in '06. Then, took a massive amount of young players in '07 and got them to 7th in drums and 5th overall. Not to mention, he's the king of the WGI circuit on the West coast. They've really started something great and I hope to see the progression continue. We'll see I guess. Nothing would surprise me though. It seems the admin departments from some of the bigger corps are mostly worried about recaps and don't really 'invest' in a staff anymore, much less a drumline's identity and style. It's like free agency now. Pity.

Mike HAS been let go to my disbelief, in fact weeks ago. What a great job he was doing! I'm not sure why he is still listed on the SCV site staff page. I imagine that someone will ###### him up.

  6. Bluecoats beat Scouts by the end of the week. Not sure if they were swapping placements throughout the season at head to head shows, but regardless, things change with a new venue AND with the last week of practice.

Same thing with Esperanza beating Magic for the first time all season at Quarters. Was that politics? Maybe it's a panel change, maybe it's more ticking one way or another. This is our activity.

  7. Truthfully, the fact that BD blatantly stole the idea from Logan sort of bothered me considering how innovative (and impresive) it was when Logan did it.  I don't remember if the Logan show had narration, though...

Scott Chandler has been the caption head at Logan for quite some time, as well as at the Blue Devils, so I don't think that you can really look at it like BD "stole the idea" when it was his idea in the first place! Maybe someone out there can clarify if Scott was the caption head in 1999, but I am 99% positive that he was.

  8. ESPERANZA - DI

    *snip*

Oh, and yes, toward the end, the pit starts blowing whistles for no apparent reason, other than to make the audience scratch their heads and ask, "Why?"  The make no sense, do not add to the show, and are pretty much ridiculous.

Hi Marc - OK, so I (the arranger) must clarify! The show is entitled "Crossroads". It is a collection of literal and non-literal ideas to represent the theme "Crossroads". You will see the "X" or "+" form in the drill at many points in the show, etc. The ballad represents people's lives intersecting, or the "love song" in which you see the guard in pairs representing on the big push.

The section in question (with the whistles) is the more literal "Traffic Intersection" portion of the show. Yes, all of the design ideas aren't maxxed out yet, but hopefully this explanation makes the idea less "ridiculous". But then again, it is SUPPOSED to be tongue in cheek. Should we add narration to describe the show as it progresses? ;-) OK, jk jk!

Hope this helps. The members & staff are working hard this week to give the show some more "umph". I appreciate the reviews and positive comments by everyone (Ryan, thanks). See you in San Antonio!

Nice job, Esperanza!  Now why is it that some of the lower tier corps are still trying to pull off the esoteric shows that the big boys have moved away from?  Let’s hope that trend changes soon.

    Harvey Phelps

for clarification, are you saying that you hope that Esperanza joins the rest of community with a similar show to others, or that the big boys get back to some esoteric shows?! :)
