  1. If you could hand pick Dan Acheson's successor as DCI's CEO, whom would you pick? I have seen people mention Dave Gibbs and David Glasgow already, but was hoping for people's thoughts and reasoning behind the picks. I'll go first. Robert Morrison - formerly of The Cadets, Music for All, VH1 Save the Music, Pearl Percussion, NAMM, etc. https://musicforall.org/board-of-directors/robert-b-morrison/ Bob ticks off a ton of the boxes that I would like to see. 1) Familiarity with drum corps (as he was former staff - the first front ensemble caption head for the C-Pit). 2) Experience in non-profit management. 3) Highly successful in business. 4) Very well respected by many within the music/arts community.
  2. New day heading towards a new season. Out with 2023 drum corps season, moving on to 2024. But before i look forward i and many of us still have many days ahead to still reflect on the Incredible 2023 season; on all the shows that was produced and performed. The level of talent across the board was impressive, the competitive nature of the young members were fierce and magnificent to watch. The return and battle for 12th in top 12, the rise of The Mandarins from previous 10th place to 6th. The return of Cadets, The resilience of Cavaliers, The battles of Troop, BS, Colts. The incredible designs and battles between Phantom, Mandarins, Cadets. The Spectacular show down of the top 4; BAC, BC, CROWN, BD was unmatched and thrilling, and the 21st victory of the BD Undefeated streak from 2022 to 2023, technically they haven't lost a show since finals 2019, which is another record in the history books. What would ya'll like to individually like to see Blue Devils explore for the 2024 show. Should it be a conceptual, and what kind of concept ? Should it be purely musical, and what musical genre would you like for them to explore ? Should it be another arts show ? Should it be light heart , or Dark themed ? Should be Story telling ?
  3. Will a more experienced, seasoned group keep the Ott, take the Zingali and Sanford, and finally 3-peat? Your thoughts?

  5. I'm very saddened to announce that the YouTube channel Gelp99 has been completely terminated off of YouTube following several copyright strikes by a third party. The channel had many many performances archived of both DCI and DCA performances going back to the 1960s. I will be mourning its loss for a long while
  6. My apologies if this thread has already been created...Anyway Congratulations to the 2021 Class of BAC! You were ALL amazing! Welcome to the 2022 Class of BAC, friends, parents, family, volunteers, and the rest of the DCP creatures that like to lurk in here! I thought I would also make a dedication in my first thread post to the 2020 Class that didn't get to perform for us in the traditional sense...I love this version with the beautiful angelic voice with featured alumna vocalist Aubrie Dentino...
  7. Blue Devils' nation. What do you expect from the 2022 edition of BD returning to the field ? What changes would you like to see, and what predictions do you hold in regards to music writing and selections ? Will there be a shift in design approach, and how influential do you think they "might" become in the current/post pandemic of the activity? Will there be a shift with the organization, changing and morphing into a bigger and a better entity that they are now, expanding and growing way stronger; Or do we see a dwindling down of who BD is for past many years ? For discussion sake, let's discuss and answer some of these questions and let's talk about our expectations and predictions. Will we see a WOW BD production for 2022 ? Or Will it be the WTF! BD show. What's your thoughts on this ? What type of shows do you like most of BD ? Ps. Even the bashers are welcome to give their thoughts 🤪 I'm most interested to know what you think.
  8. I have 2 extra tix for Finals and Semis. Section 341 (Friend's section) Row 1, Seats 4 and 5 Face value: $99 each for Semis; $159 for Finals jeffdgrady@hotmail.com or 832.633.5864
  9. Hi! I am looking for 2 or 3 tickets to DCI Finals! My price range is probably a bit on the low side, so I know this is a long shot. I am just wanting to get tickets that arent in the corners or around the sides, and I got scammed by someone already to the tune of $135 from another site so I will need some verification or to pay with some format that has protections against fraud.

  12. So with all of the rumors swirling around, I was wondering what everyone's favorite I&E performance they ever saw, in person or online, was.
  13. GEM's Aaron Blackley did a fun little interview with the synth player from Genesis https://generaleffectmedia.substack.com/p/on-the-dot-ep-1-josh-tran-from-genesis?s=w Looks like they're doing a Texas Sized version of the Colts' Cornfield Tour, and some insight on the connection between Genesis and the Wizard of Oz.

  16. I got this in my inbox today due to my use of their services. No doubt this is an attempt to do some major PR control. I'm not sure what specifically made them want to send this out though. Maybe issues related to DCI, WGI, and MFA? "Dear #### I would like to take this opportunity to re-introduce Tresóna: who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Tresóna was started, and is currently staffed, by musicians, educators and music fans. We have created a simple and cost-effective licensing platform and are committed to protecting the rights of songwriters to make sure that they are rightfully compensated for their work. Thousands of hard-working songwriters and publishers are dependent on the royalties collected from the licensing of their music to survive. A vast majority of these publishers are small family businesses with one or two employees; they are not multi-national corporations. They are no different than the arrangers, choreographers, set designers, costume creators and thousands of others whose livelihood is dependent on a vibrant music industry. Music is the key ingredient and the foundation of all performance ensembles. Without songs, there would be no marching bands, show choirs, a cappella groups or any other musical performance group. The licensing of custom arrangements, which is required by the U.S. Copyright Act, is often one of the smallest line items in the budget of many ensemble programs. Most performance ensembles obtain the necessary licenses; however, there are some ensembles and organizations which refuse to do so. The abuse of the system by these groups for illicit financial gain has been shocking. There are large enterprises with ensembles that travel all over the country performing at both nonprofit and for-profit events. They pay enormous sums of money for choreographers, arrangers, contest entry, lighting, costumes, props and a host of other outside services. Despite having budgets of more than $500,000/year and generating surpluses of over $150,000/year, these organizations refuse to get the licenses they need and compensate songwriters for their songs. Rather than pay the relatively small licensing fee and promote proper licensing behavior, some ensembles have opted instead to retain high-priced lawyers and consultants to avoid obtaining the necessary licenses. When the dedication of this small group of ensembles deprives songwriters of their ability to make a living, Tresóna and the rights holders we represent are forced to defend these rights in court. When this happens, it is disappointing and begs the question: How can the community as a whole promote participation in the arts and suggest to students that a career in music is viable if it doesnt support the foundation of the entire music ecosystem - the songs and the songwriters? Tresóna is proud of the work we do and deeply value the excellent working relationships we have developed with thousands of arrangers, directors, music educators, parents and performers around the country. We are committed to partnering with, and listening to, the ensemble community so that we may grow these relationships, as well as nurture new ones. We thank you for your support and look forward to our continued relationship in the years to come. Best, Larry Mills EVP, Tresóna" ..... End of letter I absolutely understand the need for composers/arrangers/creators to be compensated. I also understand that there are groups (both scholastic and independent) that have extremely bloated design budgets. But in my opinion, this copyright situation is getting a bit out of hand, at least in regards to video performances. We are losing an opportunity to share with our younger generations the great performances organizations like DCI, WGI, and MFA have to offer. Our kids (and educators) are missing the ability to see their peers across the country achieve things that they didn't know were possible. I can't even purchase older BOA and WGI DVDs for our library anymore. What are your thoughts about what Tresona is saying?

  19. Greetings! For about six months now I have hosted Sketchbook Podcast which focuses on creativity, preparation, & effort with artists, creators, & educators. Part 1 of the interview with Chris Komnick, executive director of the Madison Scouts, releases at midnight on April 13th. I fully realize that to many, Komnick and/or the Scouts tend to incite some polarizing posts and threads. But this episode is drum corps related and so I thought I would make sure to publicize here. Ep. 28, Part 1: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC) So that you have an idea of what exactly we talked about, here are the bullet points for Part 1: Personal Profile Life, Education, and career Komnick's path from marching member to executive director. Is drum corps too expensive? Increase in costs, where does the tuition go, & how much does member tuition actually cover. The effects of BAC assembling their "super group" of designers and staff in 2016 & the California Wage & Hour Laws on DCI. Have the two coasts altered the financial landscape of DCI? Does the cancellation of the 2020 season function as a "financial reset" for DCI? The timeline and process behind deciding to become gender-inclusive. To some, this may not seem we got too deep into DCI and/or the Madison Scouts. But I assure you that Part 2 will definitely focus on the highs and lows of the Madison Scouts. Part 2 will release later this week. Sketchbook Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, & wherever fine podcasts are downloaded. Ep. 28, Part 1: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC)

  23. Recent corps announcements introduced Drum Majors for the 2020 season. Many are pursuing music educations which sparked my curiosity about what a drum corps experience would equate to in a career for women. Like many, my experience in drum corps was mostly male with a few female players, but as drum corps has evolved, it seems like there has been an increase in female players. I've recently discovered Rachel Portman who is a cinematic composer and the following clips of some very talented female trumpet players on youtube. I would love to hear comments especially from the women on the forum and your experiences as a female brass player. There are many. Meanwhile, enjoy these few samples of some wonderful trumpet players Alison Balsom Song - III.
