Hope all the corps folks are safe from Gustav...

Like Moe Latour. Anyone heard if he has already evacuated to Baton Rouge again?

Yes, I would hate to hear any bad news about Moe. I know he told me that he hardly had any damage from Katrina, but I hope he and his home remain safe during Gustav.

I will be praying for everyone in the direct path because I know what that can be like...I was in Pascagoula during Hurricane Katrina(I think a category 4 when it hit) and we were in water up to my waist....we were the lucky ones. People in Waveland, Pass Christian, Biloxi, and Gulfport got it much worse. Waveland and Pass Christian was just about wiped off the map during that storm....we got lucky and Gustav missed us because Waveland and Pass Christian and all them cities would have been gone for sure.....Good luck for those in the path...

Actually, it was Category 3 when it made landfall in Louisiana. I remember hearing initial reports that sounded relieved that it wasn't a Category 4 because the wind speeds would not be so devastating . . . but that was before news broke of how high the storm surge was. As I recall, that storm surge was over 20 feet; for Gustav, they're predicting 14 feet. That's still a lot of water, and with so much of the natural barrier gone that could have absorbed that water and wind, it's worrisome. My thoughts and prayers are with those folks.

The storm surge during Katrina was 28 feet.

The Mississippi coast was actually hit the hardest, but didn't get as much attention because the MS state planning and response was effective and people actually evacuated the MS coast whereas New Orleans was a complete cluster which was compounded by the levees failing. People like to blame the feds but the problem was primarily with the state and local authorities. Initially, the feds were asking the states what aid they needed and Louisiana officials actually said they didn't need help.

I know us folks in Houston are happy it's not coming here but I'm praying for those people in Louisiana.

Us folk just south west of Houston are doing the same.
