CoolGuyCali
I am looking for a French Horn. Want either a Yamaha 66x series (Preferably in Silver) or a Conn 8D depending where/when it was built. Please contact me if you have any info regarding this topic. A little insight: I have looked at http://www.hornplayer.net but feel they are a bit pricey for me right now.... Thanks in advance! Shadow_7
eBay craigslist craigslist seems a bit seasonal for horns. And sometimes regional. If you don't mind driving +/- 100 miles to pick up a horn, you can get lucky on craigslist. It still comes out slighly less than shipping in most cases. Unless you drive a semi or something. And you know what you're getting before handing over you money. And other outlets. I got my Trombone when I was trying out horns at the local music shop and an old retiree came in wanting to sell his horn to the store. 2 year old horn, but mint condition, for less than half of MSRP. At the time I was apprehensive being closed wrap, tenor shank, small rotor. But it's such a nice horn and I got really lucky on that one. As I keep wondering why I'm holding on to my POS that I used all through High School, College, and Army Band. It's not like I've had any paying gigs in sleazy bars lately. BMBob
If the horns on Hornplayer.net are a bit too pricey, then you may be looking for something that's not out there. The 8-Ds that are priced higher on there are usually the Elkharts, and they eventually fetch prices in the $3500-$4500 range. The other 8-Ds that are priced a little over $2000 are not of the vintages that are generally best thought of, but would be suitable for a student or amateur. If price is the issue, I would look at these, specifically: http://hornplayer.net/forsale/f8407.html http://hornplayer.net/forsale/f6132.html http://hornplayer.net/forsale/f8170.html http://hornplayer.net/forsale/f8140.html I could try to give some more advice, but I would need to know more about what you're looking for in a horn and why. That would help determine more about the instrument you should look for and where to find it. Feel free to PM me or send an email. I'd be glad to try to help. Oh, I'm a horn player by trade, and have played freelance for the last eight years or so, as well as with several ensembles. (I just realized that I hadn't given you a reason to ask me for any advice) Good luck!
crazymello
Ha, if only everyone on DCP gave their credentials before tossing out advice....
randomnoise
I'm told that Hans Hoyer is making the horns that are being sold under the Jean Baptiste brand name. If so, this horn is definitely worth trying.
