Dave
I don't believe I've ever heard of such a thing, and I don't see it having much of an application in the marching field. There are single, double, and even triple French horns, but there are a myriad of reasons for having those extra "sides" which I won't go into because I'm not a horn player. Also, given the many differences in range and general construction between a mellophone and a horn, and the way the parts are written, I don't think it would really be that necessary. JoeW
thanks for the info and good luck to you and the starz this summer
TerriDitt57
do you mean like a double horn that goes from F to b-flat? No. Mellophone is thankfully in either G in seniors, b-flat or F in juniors. I don't think the "beast" needs to be any more complicated. (P.S. I am loving 'the beast")
OPEC
An F/Bb mello could be useful, but a heavy monster. the fundamental pitch of the F mellophone is lower than a Bb instrument, thus sorting out the partials up high is harder on the F instrument. I could kiss the guy who brought in the Bb side for french horn.

Adding on a LOT of double tuning..... and making the assumption that most mello players are double-horn players in REAL life. A serious Assumption seeing that NOT one I have marched with since '99 is an actual "horn" player. I've been the ONLY one.
OPEC
yeah, alot of soprano players switch to mello.. a bit sad that a lot of horn players are missing out.
TerriDitt57
yeah, alot of soprano players switch to mello.. a bit sad that a lot of horn players are missing out. oops I'm wrong. I did march with ONE really good concert french horn player LAST year. Actually plays with an orchestral group. Forgot about him. (there were sixteen mellos after all!) :)
OPEC
I think MANY players skip out on corps just because they fear getting a fuzzy tone. I just say bring along a concert horn if possible and combat the fuzz.
