DPEmerald
Don't know if this is of interest to anyone but it was fun putting this list together the last three weeks. Amazing that it only took that long. Enjoy! Some big lines for the 60s and 70s. I don't remember the corps having 8 in 72. I remember Blue Rock and Kingsmen. Fun to look at though. The longest I saw anyone on that list was 5 years is that correct?

Paul Milano
Some big lines for the 60s and 70s. I don't remember the corps having 8 in 72. I remember Blue Rock and Kingsmen. Fun to look at though. The longest I saw anyone on that list was 5 years is that correct? We had eight snares for the first six shows. Very clean for early season. Unfortunately the tenor line was relatively weak so we moved two snares to the double tenor line. It worked . . . We took 5th in drums at DCI (if I recall correctly) and won drums at VFW (though the "big corps" weren't there). The tenor line had only one or two tics. What is most amazing about all that is the fact that we had NO INSTRUCTORS that year! Our only instructor left for personal family reasons in February. Jim Middleton came in for a couple weeks to write two drum solos that we later rewrote. Bill Sweeney helped out the last two weeks to help clean a bit. Oldest snare drummer was 18 and we still pulled off a very rewarding year. The next year, 1973, was more of the same. Virtually no instructors the entire winter/summer. Things finally got headed back in the right direction in 1974 when we got a full staff.
Paul Milano
6 years for Curt Johnson.....7 years for Mark Baker. Actually there were three guys who marched 7 years each (Tom Kasten - 50s, Ralph Poznanski - 70s, Mark Baker - 70s & 80s). There were also about ten guys who marched 5 or 6 years, including some in the 90s.

There were also about ten guys who marched 5 or 6 years, including some in the 90s. Paul - a remarkable legacy of Cavalier history. I have attempted to do the same for 27th. However, I am naming every drummer in every section that marched either VFW or DCI prelims, and our history is shorter, from 1968 to 1986 and the alumni corps in 1994 and 1995. I used the "prelims" as my benchmark - because every corps seems to have members that had to leave for a variety of reasons. I've had great luck thus far - but still need a few more names. The names above that marched 7 years each - it would never happen in todays world unless a kid lived locally - which I am sure they all did. The closest is Andrew Odello, of Blue Devils fame. There are photos of him wearing his corps jacket that shows the dates of every year he has marched in the organization going back to 1993. Such loyalty deserves recognition beyond words !!! Paul Milano
Good luck with your 27th Lancers project. It is fun connecting with some of the folks as you do your research. As for our seven-year snare drummers . . . that's just the number of years they marched snare. Some were in the corps for a couple years prior to that. The longest marching Cavalier in our history (9 years) is Paul Leo (1968 - 1976). He was a tenor for four years and a snare for five years. Still one of my best friends who I see at least weekly . . . 43 years after we met at practice! Edited July 26, 2011 by Paul Milano
danguernsey
Paul, Thanks for sharing the list. It was interesting seeing Larry McCormick's name on the list in '55 and '56. I didn't know that Sal Ferrera played snare (early '50s). If I recall, wasn't he the principle brass arranger for the Cavaliers in the 60s?
