PhunkieBehaveYer
i'm going to the yea! audtion camp this november (hoping for a baritone spot) and it says to prepare a 1.5-2 minute prepared piece. me and my private teacher are having difficulty determing what kind of prepared piece would be best. we don't know if they would prefer a solo of some kind, perhaps some loud technical orchestral excerpts to show off my sound at top dynamics, etc. any suggestions or explanation would be helpful. (since yea! lets you audition on any instrument, i plan on playing trombone, if that affects your response.)
bssop97
Do what you do best..... Do not do anything else. For myself it was H.L. Clarke solos and other cornet stuff (kind of fast, some double or triple tounging, and usually had a slow section). For a friend of mind it was trumpet concertos ( Hyden, Hummel, etc....). We both auditon at the same school right after each other. I did Valse Brillante, he did 1st and 2nd of the Hummel. He got max..... I got $25 from max....... Two different styles two very good results. Just do what you do best. brassguymike
Show off your talent. If you have an incredible sound, show it off. If you have incredible technique, show it off. If you're incredible at everything, show it off. You are given the freedom of a personal selection. Select something that shows off what you are best at. PhunkieBehaveYer
How is the practice going for auditions? Pretty good. I decided to go with the Vivace from Sonata in F minor by Telemann (I don't know if anyone is familiar with it). It's pretty quick but much of it is slurred/legato tongued; it sorta shows off flexibility/technical skill and tone quality simultaneously. I've also started running and exercising more to get in shape physically. So hopefully I'll be able to impress the staff in two months, although i am nervous about the stiff competition i'll face. JoeW
dont be nervous......its easy for me to say, but just have fun and learn!
kimelabari
sounds like you are ready to knock them dead at your audition... like Joe said, not be nervous and just have fun. Your ability will come through in your playing when you are relaxed. Kimela
scadesboi
What does everyone think of Gustav Holst's Mars? It's my high school's marching band opener, and it's a pretty good bari piece....
Dave
You'd be advised to look into solo literature. Band parts aren't really going to stand up against what other people will be bringing there. About the only thing along those lines that might fly would be orchestral excerpts, but solos are probably a better bet.
