HelloMello17
Okay, I'm loving the mellophone, I'm loving the whole drum corps magic.... But I still love my French Horn, too. My mellophone chops are still going strong through the off-season, but I'm having a really hard time getting back my French Horn embouchure. Is anyone else suffering this angst as well, or can supply me with some sage advice?
Dave
Mouthpiece buzzing. Do it all the time, in the car, watching TV, whenever. Buzz on your mouthpiece during the season and it won't be nearly as big an issue come the off-season. That'll get your chops up in no time. Mickey Eastridge
Actualy, playing on my Mello6 for the whole sumer did wonders for my horn chops. We use Marching French Horns here at BYU, and I'm playing notes on it that don't "exist." All I did after tour was...nothing. I practiced very little for two weeks, and then picked up my concert horn. It was very easy for me. But I agree, buzz buzz buzz. If it hurts, tae it easy for a few minutes, and try it again. You'll be fine in no time!
Mellofreek
w/Stp: I'm the exact same way. Though in the off season, I usually play enough of both instruments not to have any issues with switching. Isn't there a book or something on that? If you switch between instruments enough, your lips just figure out how to adjust to each particular instrument. Though, I'm a freek. I'm going to try and play my mellophone for a student recital. IT'S GONNA BE FUN!!!!! I love shock value sometimes! heh heh... b**bs Hey Mickey, are you marching again this coming summer? bssop97
Alright I'm not a french horn player but I will recomend this... Since most FH players play down stream ( due to the high mouthpiece placement ) , go with buzzing without your mouthpiece. You can only buzz downstream without your mouthpiece. Some trumpet players (myself included )play with a high mouthpiece position too and this cures their problems. You can only buzz downstream without your mouthpiece. Yeah, my French Horn teacher has me doing that, and it's been helping alot. Also, I took your advice, bluestarcontra, and buzzed a whole bunch today- it's already helping. Thanks for all the advice. (By the way, I really enjoyed hearing Blue Star's hornline this past year.)
