byline
Sue:Those are AWESOME shots! What a terrific thing for you to do! Thanks! I e-mailed my dad and let him know that he's "published" (or, at least, his photos are), and he wrote back to me, baffled. He said he saw lots of people taking pictures at shows, so he'd assumed that each corps had a kind of official photographer, and that all the corps had loads and loads of photos accumulated over the years. I wrote back and told him that most of these photographers were probably with "Drum Corps World," "Drum Corps News" or maybe even DCI, but that the actual corps staff really didn't have time to take pictures, and many of the parents didn't, either. They just wanted to see their kids perform. As a result, photos--especially some of the impromptu shots he took in our warm-up area--are quite rare. There's one shot I refused to scan, because I'm embarrassed by it. It was a great shot of our guard during warm-up. Our guard instructors had just changed a hand position . . . and, of course, I was the only one who forgot. Originally, we were doing a lunge while reaching up, and looking up at our extended arm, with our hand facing palm-down. Our instructors thought it would be more visual with the palm flat toward the audience, so they had just changed it. I forgot. Duh! And, as I recall, I realized I'd forgotten even as I did it, but in my peripheral vision I could see my dad taking a picture, so I didn't even try to correct myself. Plus, there was that old military bearing of, "You don't move once you've hit a position" . . . so I didn't. That picture drives the perfectionist in me nuts!
