Machine
I was watching SCV on the 2001 DVD and was wondering, what instrument is the soloist playing at the beginning of New Era? It doesn't look like a baritone and it's too big and doesn't really sound like a middle horn. Can someone satisfy my curiosity?
hboyce
It's a mellophone solo.
bluestarsfco
French Horn. Not sure if it was Bb or F.
Machine
That was my first thought. But having never seen a marching french horn before, I didn't know. Thanks for clearing that up.

WoofInTheWoods
Yep, definitely a mellophone. SCV had 10 middle horns in 2001. Five F Mellohpones and 5 Bb Marching French Horns. Here's a pic of the soloist at a rehersal in Murphreesboro, Tn. last year. (hope it shows up) Anybody know the guys name?
hboyce
Five F Mellohpones and 5 Bb Marching French Horns Actually I believe it was 6 mellos and 4 french horns, but I could be wrong about that. But also the french horns were in F and not Bb
