mr.mello
They had flugels in 02 as well (they opened In The Heat Of The Day), dunno if they had them earlier <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, in 02 we had a midvoice section of 10 mellos and 6 flugels. In 03 it was 8 mellos and 8 flugels. In 04 they had 12 mellos. As for the flugels, I believe the trend now with Drew Shanefield's arrangements is that the flugels are playing parts akin to 3rd trumpets. Personally, I prefer flugels as a solo horn rather than a section because not every person can get that distinct flugel sound and they end up sounding like a trumpet. KungFuCharlie
I'm pretty sure the '01 Bluecoats were 24,12,18,10.
DevsBari02
Instrumentation is based off of what kind of sound you want. Everyone has different opinions about it. Different instrumentations work for different corps for different reasons. For example, I dont think marching 20-14-24-12 would work very well for Devils, as I dont think 24-12-10-10-10 would work for Phantom). Instrumentation is idiom-specific. 1999 Spirit of Atlanta: 20 Sopranos 14 Mellophones 14 Baritones 4 Euphoniums 12 Contras 2001 Spirit of JSU: 20 Trumpets, 12 Mellophones 14 Baritones 6 Euphoniums 12 Tubas 2002 Blue Devils: 24 Trumpets 12 Mellophones 10 Baritones 10 Euphoniums 10 Tubas 2004 Court of Honor (Div.III): 10 Trumpets 6 Mellophones 3 Baritones 5 Euphoniums 4 Tubas Edited January 17, 2005 by DevsBari02

HornPlayerChris
At Magic in 2003, we had 10 Tubas, 20 Baris, 12 Mellos, and 22 Trumpets. Not sure about the other sections, but, Mellophones had 2 parts with upper and lower splits for both parts at certain points.

mchromik
Most of the Star hornlines of old where fairly similar; 22 Sops (3 parts w/split leads) 16 Mellos (2 parts) 6 Bari 14 Euphs (2 parts) 12 Contras For a total of 70. There were differences through the years; 85 had all Baris no Euphs, some early 90s lines had 18 mellos, 92 had 16 Contras, ect.
leadsop97
hmmm last year with ECJ we had: 12 trumpets - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd..although with chick corea, the 2nds and 3rd doubled at times. the lead part was also split at times from 2-4 parts. 7 mellos - 1st and 2nd 13 baris - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 4 tubas - an occasional split into octaves or 5ths. very odd numbers for a hornline, but we made it work :)
