1980 Key to the Sea Scores

Recommended Posts

I just pulled this from Scorpsboard:

[sNIP]

I still have my copy of the DCI Contest Guild from 1980.  It list the show as a part of Tour II and gives the following line-up:

Avant Garde

Oakland Crusaders

Sky Ryders

Royal Crusaders

Garfield

Royal Brigade

Seattle Imperials

LI Kingsmen

Freelancers

Florida Vanguard

Madison

Phantom

Guardsmen(MA)

So I am looking to find the prelims scores at this point.  We were close scorewise to Royal Brigade and Oakland all season.  I'm betting LI Kingsmen and Florida didn't show.

No record of the Bluecaots being there but it would make sense given the geography.

Long Island Kingsmen were never scheduled to be in this show. DCI originally put us in the entire midwest swing of both Tour I and Tour II that year. We did not do either of those swings because we wanted to stay financially solvent. We did the Tour I from WV through FL, and then Tour II on the east coast from CYO down to Birmingham. Unlike most east coast corps that year, we finished the year with virtually no debt at all.

I kind of figured that.

I make no claim that the contest guild was accurate.

Just using that as a starting point.

My guess kansas is that you guys did the World Open and then stayed in MA for few days until CYO rahter than make that trip to the Midwest.

on the night before the Bluecoats held their Innovations in Brass show, Sunday evening, August 3rd at Fawcett Stadium to a crowd of 7,500

the day before(8/2)the pro football hall of fame game was played by the Green Bay Packers and the San Diego Chargers and was obliterated by a raging storm that fell in the fourth quarter, which worried some IIB officials that attendance at their show might be affected.

it was not though, and although some rain fell during the first corps performance it turned out to be dry, cool and comfortable.

1. Freelancers 74.75

2. Royal Crusaders 66.55

3. Oakland Crusaders60.30

4. Colts 59.65

5. Florida Vanguard 36.20

exhibition by Bluecoats followed by full show encore by Freelancers

I was at that HOF Game and they were right to cancel the game even though I believe it was still a 0-0 tie. The weather was awful and I believe once lightning started in the area they shut the game down.

Innovations was also a good show, and remember the freelancers were using north drums that year (i think).

Forgot Key to the Sea was a monday that year but knew it was a day night prelims - finals. that's why i thought it was a weekend sho since they had the daytime prelims. odd for a weekday.

I think it was set up that way because the tour was so tight that year.

8/2 US Open Prelims and Finals in Marion

8/2 World Open Prelims and Finals in Lynn

8/3 DCI Canada Prelims and Finals

8/4 Key to the Sea Prelims and Finals

8/6 Butler Prelims and Finals

8/7 CYO Nats

8/9 Allentown Prelims and Finals

8/13 Birmingham starts

I guess we will never see that level of drum corps activity again.

Actually, we were scheduled to go to Hamilton for DCI Canada after World Open. But, the bus I was riding on (#2) blew an air bag on the rear right. We couldn't get a replacement right away, so we spent that night at 27th Lancer Hall (Thanks, George B!), and then went to a private school for a few days of "death camp" cleaning before CYO. It really paid off, as we went from being beat by the Defenders by 1.9 at World Open Finals, to beating them by 2.4 at CYO.
