Marching Xylophones

Back in the 70's and early 80's what were the size of the marching Xylophones?

How many octaves were the norm?

2.5 for xylos 2.0 and 2.5 for marimbas and 2.3 for vibraphones. Bells are still 2.5

Meh. On second thought, they weren't so bad during practice if you took the resonators off. :)

If someone was interested in learning how to play a xylophone what starter book and equipment would y'all reccomend?

Please speak plainly and clearly, I normally play soprano.

Mel Bay or Belwin Band builder for lesson books. Any of the percussion starter kits with bells and snare drum. Try to find the thickess bars you can, the thin ones can sound tinnish, on the bells.

For an entry level full size instrument try the Yamaha x135 3.5 octave xylophone or the musser m42 4.0 octave mairimba. Both are paduak wood and are reasonable.

I'm former sop player too, arthritis messes with my marching.I play vibes now.
