  1. Re-do 2006 show next year, not even kidding.
  2. Is it just me or does Boston have a more deep, controlled (in a good way) brass sound and a more musically interesting book with much more dynamic contrast compared to Crown
  3. extremes almonds from Blue Diamond Crown just comes out with everything, says "This is an audio-visual full sensory event" and then does it.
  4. Old school (70s) people love park n blow, soloists, less drill, and very loud annoying pits. What are they complaining about????
  5. I have to judge the achievement more than the content but crown seems to be killing it. A real performers' showcase
  6. full corps brass playing sustained FFF chords is so musically boring and unpleasant timbre. Also no one likes double tonguing
  7. There's a book to be written about white flight, suburbanization, tax codes, development, and big-time competitive marching band in places like DFW, Tulsa, Houston, Atlanta...
  8. with credit to the 2004 guard bus [corps song, to the Doxology melody from the 04 show]: Oh Crapital our Regiment, 800 dollars I have spent… to sit on a hot bus all day long, and perform like there is nothing wrong I conflated Fred Morris with Fred Morrison, who left Crossmen in 2018 after allegations made about members of the staff and how they were handled. My sincere apologies, and my original post has been edited. Fred Morris did indeed come in and make sure the corps could finish its season and the members were safe. He wasn’t involved before or after. I didn’t mean to imply that his management caused the corps to fold; the corps was definitely going to die no matter what (and shouldn’t have been allowed to tour in 2006, maybe 2005 too)
  9. 2004 was bad, but I was a rookie and didn't know any better. 2005 was really bad. 2006, I wasn't in the corps but it was an abyss edit: They performed in judged competition that night and the next??
  10. 16 years ago yesterday. Never forget. Wonder why I am so cynical about drum corps? Anyway, it seems like corps are being a lot smarter -- god, I hope so! -- especially as the heat increases every year
  11. The only time in 3 summers I had a break from rehearsal for heat was in Kansas, 2006, with Cadets. It was 98 101 according to WeatherUnderground archives, humid and sunny, and they had us just chill inside for 3-4 hours. Famously, my old corps (Capital Regiment) kept rehearsing. The corps had apparently mostly eaten leftover cake for a few days. The Cavaliers were having a pool day nearby, and after 5 Cap Reg members got heatstroke, Cavies director called the cops to end rehearsal. The corps was put under direction of Fred Morris, and folded at the end of the year.
