  7. Colts Receive $25,000 Grant From Dubuque Racing Association May 30, 2013 Greg The Dubuque Racing Association recently announced grant awards to local and area non-profit organizations. This year's grant will go toward the replacement of the roof at the Colts Center. In 2012, the Colts received $40,000 for new uniforms for the 2013 season. The Dubuque Racing Association, (DRA) is the non-profit organization that is the license holder for the Mystique and the Diamond Jo casinos. Grants have been offered to non-profit organizations through a competitive grants process most every year since 1985. Significant funds also are contributed to the City of Dubuque from the DRA. The last two years, the DRA awarded the Colts the maximum amount offered both years, $40,000 last year for new uniforms for both the Colts and the Colt Cadets in commemoration of the 50th anniversary season of the Colts, and this year, the maximum $25,000. Both grants came with a requirement of a match of an additional 25% or more. For the new uniforms for the Colts and the Colt Cadets, 230 in total, donors were given the opportunity to dedicate a uniform for a contribution of $65 per uniform. A total of 237 uniforms were dedicated by donors this spring. The Colts wore the new uniforms in the Memorial Day Parade in Dubuque and the Colt Cadets will show off their new uniforms at Brass 'n' Brats in Belmont, Wisconsin on Tuesday, June 11. Since 1987, the Colts have received grants from the DRA totaling over $340,000 for new instruments, vehicles, uniforms, a souvenir trailer, computers and equipment maintenance.
  8. Colts Announce 2013 Program May 20, 2013 Vicki MacFarlane, Colts Director The Colts are proud to announce their 50th Anniversary program, "Field of Dreams." CLICK HERE to learn more about the show, view the 2013 Colts repertoire, and check the summer tour schedule. A half century ago, life was simpler, love was sweeter, and the music of the day was evolving from big band and blues to an exciting new sound called "rock 'n' roll." The Colts evoke memories of the heartland when cruisin' the strip was king, and cookin' up some cool beats was a little piece of heaven. At a time when Elvis couldn't help falling in love, and Jerry Lee shouted, "Great balls of fire," the Colts were born in a quiet corner of Iowa where simple pleasures and a determined spirit defined this place where dreams come true. REPERTOIRE "Can't Help Falling In Love," by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore and George David Weiss "At Last," by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren "American Graffiti," an arrangement by Aaron Guidry "The Place Where Dreams Come True" (from Field of Dreams), by James Horner "Chorale & Fugue In Jazz," by Morton Gould Enjoy two opportunities to see the Colts prior to the start of the DCI season. The Colts will appear in the annual Memorial Day parade in downtown Dubuque on Monday, May 27th. Following the parade, the Colts will perform their 2013 production with a standstill performance in Washington Park. Our 3rd Annual Summer Premiere is scheduled for Saturday, June 22nd in the Loras College Rock Bowl. CLICK HERE for additional details regarding this FREE event featuring the full field shows of both the Colts and Colt Cadets. Preshow entertainment provided by our Pandemonium Steel Drum Ensemble. Be sure to order your tickets for Music On The March to be held in the beautiful, new Dalzell Field at Dubuque Senior High School on Friday, July 12th. Summer is here! Time to enjoy some great music and performances provided by your "home team" Colts.
  9. Colts and Colt Cadets are both getting new uniforms this year for their 50th anneversary. CC has been marching in past Colts uniforms, this will be the first time they get their own unique look. The Colts used overlays for the 2011 Decpetion show, but it was the same "Tiger Stripes" uniform they have used for several years (2007-2012 I think?) The used uniforms are being sold, anyone interested can contact the office at 563.582.4872 for details (Lots of color guard uniforms and flags avaiable too-just check the website!) In past years some uniform pieces have gone to high schools or other drum corps, lots of the Tiger Stripes jackets are heading to alumni. We express our sincere appreciation to the Dubuque Racing Association for their $40,000 grant which is making the new uniforms a reality. We still need to fundraise a 25% match to receive the total amount from the DRA. You can dedicate a uniform with a $65 donation to the uniform fund, and a patch with your name will be stitched into a jacket. For more info and links to the new uniforms CLICK HERE

  12. Colt Cadets Announce 2013 Program April 3, 2013 Matt Mulvanny, Colt Cadets Director The 2013 Colt Cadets present "RED." Close your eyes. Let your emotions take control. What do you see? How do you feel? More than simply a color. Red communicates feeling, an aura, a warmth, experienced by each individual in his or her own unique way. The angst of confrontation. The passion of your pursuits. The love of your life. The pride of your accomplishments. The Colt Cadets explore the rainbow of emotions conveyed by one deceptively complex color. The show will feature the musical selections of Habanera (from Carmen) by Georges Bizet, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by David Grusin, Happy Ending (from The Red Pony Suite) by Aaron Copland, and an original composition entitled Red in the Air by Terry White and Brian Zeglis. Prepare to experience your own individual journey, as the Colt Cadets present their 2013 program, "RED." CLICK HERE for a detailed description of the show, musical repertoire, and a list of staff that will instruct the Cadets during the summer. The Colt Cadets are comprised of approximately 80 middle- and high-school students from throughout the U.S. The corps maintains at least a 2/3 local base of members that live in Dubuque and the surrounding tri-state area. The Colt Cadets will appear in 15-16 competitive performances throughout the summer, as well as a number of parades and exhibitions in the Dubuque area. Their Drum Corps International season begins with a show in Rockford, Illinois on June 21, followed by an evening in Dubuque with the Colts at their Summer Premiere on June 22 at Loras College. The Colt Cadets were founded in 1967 and are one of only three corps with a World Class "big brother" in Drum Corps International...the others being in Santa Clara and Concord, California. 13. Colts Documentary, No Boundaries, Is In The Final Stages Of Production March 25, 2013 Colts Staff Ever want to be a film producer? The full length documentary on the Colts that was filmed last summer is in the final stages of production, but we need backers to finish it by summer. Several hundred hours of great audio and video are "in the can", all recorded as it happened last summer on tour by a professional video team who traveled with us all summer. Now, the detail work begins to funnel it all down into a feature length film that will tell the story of the Colts and drum corps. A professional videographer and sound engineer traveled with us for the entire summer last year, capturing hundreds of hours of footage from the inside. See the tour unfold and enjoy interviews with members, staff, judges, alums, and leaders of the drum corps activity. Take a private look inside at the determination, hard work, and intensity it takes to field a world-class drum corps. "No Boundaries," a professional full-length documentary, is in the final stages of production just in time for our 50th Anniversary. A generous private donor got the project started, and with your help we can raise the remaining $10,000 for final production. A sneak peek trailer from the film, and information on how you can donate, is on line. Click the link and enjoy a glimpse of what it can be: Trailer of the Colts "No Boundaries" Click HERE Your contribution can be made through kickstarter, or directly to the Colts. Your donation is tax-deductible, and goes directly and securely to the Colts Youth Organization, earmarked for the film project.

  17. http://www.colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=683 Aaron Guidry Joins Colts Design Team January 11, 2013 Colts Staff The Colts are proud to announce Aaron Guidry as an addition to the 2013 design team. Aaron has been asked to compose a piece of music specifically for the Colts 2013 production. He will also oversee the use of electronics for the coming season. Chris Tomsa, Brass Arranger, and David Nelson, Percussion Arranger, will arrange the original composition to fit needs of the drum corps. "I think of my role as being one of an architect's," explained Guidry. Nelson and Tomsa will assist in voicing and adapting the chart. "Aaron brings a contemporary musical perspective that complements our design team," explained Tomsa. Relative to his contribution on the Colts electronics, Nelson shared, "I am really excited to work with Aaron because he adds such a fresh perspective on the show. He has a great sense of effect and how to generate it. As a design team, we are definitely stronger with Aaron on board." "It's great to be working in a truly collaborative environment," said Guidry, "especially with Marc Sylvester in the driver's seat. Once Marc explained the show's concept to me, I knew it would put me out of my comfort zone. With that, I had to say yes to the project! The more ideas I toss to him and the team, the bigger and bolder they become. In the end, the Colts will present a great show this summer...what could be better?!" Marc Sylvester has been busy in and out of rehearsal putting together the Colts program for announcement (coming soon). "I couldn't be happier adding Aaron to the Colts design team," said Sylvester. "He is clearly one of the most creative, wacky, fun people I've ever worked with. He will add a whole new flavor to the Colts and, in tandem with the team we already have in place, should make the Colts 2013 show a fan fave!! Aaron is in the real world of contemporary productions. His vision is inventive, creative, and humorous. His work is definitely not a transcription." Director Vicki MacFarlane explained, "To have Aaron provide his expertise, while maintaining the skills of our arrangers and staff, we enhance our product. Our goal is to ensure a cohesiveness to our entire program, as well as to bring the audience out of their seats." Learn more about AARON GUIDRY.

  24. http://www.colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=680 December Camp A Go! December 21, 2012 Colts Staff We have been out driving the roads and checking travel conditions in our area and surrounding states. We feel good about proceeding with the weekend as planned, but urge anyone traveling to check routes before travel and stick to the best roads, even if it means traveling longer distances. Please take it slowly in getting to Dubuque. It is more important that you travel safely than on time. Please allow good following distances and stick to the better traveled lanes. The sun seems to be helping the roads, and if you can leave later in your day, the roads seem to be improving as road crews can do their jobs. Please make no assumptions on road conditions, and the links below will give you the most up to date reports. Check in will begin at 7:30 pm at Roosevelt Middle School, but our doors will be open into the early morning for those arriving late. It is ok to arrive on Saturday if preferred. Some areas (particularly students in Michigan) will not be able to attend due to the storm hitting later, and students not attending due to weather conditions will be allowed to audition at a later point in time. You can update us with your plans via the Camp RSVP. Here are links for road conditions for Iowa and surrounding states: Iowa: http://hb.511ia.org/main.jsf Minnesota: http://hb.511mn.org/main.jsf Wisconsin: http://www.511wi.gov/web/map.aspx?region=winterroads&show=1 Illinois: http://wrc.gettingaroundillinois.com/pages/wrc.htm
  25. http://colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=679 Ohh...The Weather Outside Is Frightful December 20, 2012 Colts Staff Dubuque and the Midwest are experiencing blizzard conditions today and travel is virtually impossible. The good news is that Colts camp is not today. We are carefully monitoring the weather information available. The forecast calls for this horrible weather to leave the Dubuque area by the end of Thursday so, at this time, our hope is to continue with the weekend as planned. A final decision will be made by 9:30 a.m. on Friday via the Colts website. Anyone on the west side of the Mississippi River that is traveling to Dubuque on Friday should find bright, sunny skies and little to no wind. We are hoping that the road crews will be successful clearing the highways throughout the night and that travel on Friday is very good. If you are coming to Dubuque from the east (Michigan, Indiana, etc.), it appears that the worst of the weather will not pass through your area until later on Friday. Please check the weather in your area carefully before making a decision to attend this weekend's rehearsal. Even if you cannot arrive until Saturday safely, that is fine also. If any student or parent does not feel safe at any time traveling to Dubuque, PLEASE STAY HOME. Your position within the audition process will not be jeopardized if you cannot attend camp because of the weather. There will be positions available in every section of the drum corps at the January rehearsal weekend. If you decide to NOT attend, please submit another RSVP via the Colts website so we know your plans have changed. With all of that said, our intent at this time is to go ahead with the Colts weekend rehearsal on Dec. 21-23 at Roosevelt Middle School in Dubuque. Camp registration begins at 7:30 p.m. with the camp beginning at 9:00 p.m. with a full member meeting. If you need a little extra time in your travel, it is not essential that you arrive at the downbeat of camp. Once again, a final decision regarding the status of camp will be made by 9:30 a.m. on Friday via the Colts website. As always, CHECK THE COLTS WEBSITE BEFORE LEAVING FOR CAMP for any last minute changes in plans. Travel safe. We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow evening.
