  1. A few years ago, I did contact Macy's to see if I could buy a copy of that commercial....but had no luck with any kind of response from them.
  2. The graphics were done by a 10 year vet in the corps. He is always looking for jobs, so if you would like his help, I will be glad to send you his info. He does great work! Oh.....and our suspects are anything but usual...... Wait till you see our musical selections.....coming soon....
  3. Back in the early 80's.....a picture of a clipboard with a caption saying....Judges tick me off! Thought it was funny at the time.
  4. Carolina Gold celebrated its 2009 banquet at a very nice banquet hall in Greensboro. Probably one of the biggest attended banquets ever, the corps was treated to a special treat of a cake with the corps logo on top! A surprise from the catering company!! Our support staff for the summer was first up with recognition certificates and a huge round of applause. The catered meal was INCREDIBLE! After some food and laughter, the corps announced the 2009 member awards. Award winners were as follows: Jody Strickland Heart of Gold - Paul Mellander Outstanding Brass Vet: Cory Bowman Outstanding Brass First Year Member: Ken Tealer Outstanding Percussion Vet: Brandon Douglass Outstanding Percussion First Year Member: Brandon Coffey Outstanding Guard Vet: Stephanie Carnahan Outstanding Guard First Year Member: Jordan Hurley Outstanding Marcher Vet: Tony Sutherland Outstanding Marcher First Year Member: Paul Ford And a surprise roast was given for departing Corps Director - Dana Harmon. Filled with great past stories and a slide show of the years she spent with the corps, it was a great way to say goodbye to 2009 and a person who made a difference with Carolina Gold. Please check out our website, www.carolinagold.org for our January Audition information!
  5. Come to our Open House and you will find out! Two more days and counting down. Following our open house is our 2009 banquet. It will be the highest attendance ever at a Gold Banquet! Who will win our Jodie Strickland Heart of Gold award? Tune in later for this information.....
  6. Death Camp in Boulder and then Limping Our Way to Allentown “I wanna play in the Mambo. But Mr. Lindsey says NO NO NO. I’m getting cut from the whole d*mned show. Cuz of the Death Camp in Boulder CO!” (to the tune or America from West Side Story) I previously posted this in other Sky Ryders threads but it bears repeating now... (It's been a couple of years since I originally posted it.) This may help ya to understand what we went through just GETTING to Allentown in 87. The Website corpsreps.com is incorrect in showing Drum Along the Rockies was in Denver (it was in Boulder that year) - but correct in showing that The Sky Ryders didn't compete at any shows between July 25 (DATR) and August 1 (DCI East in Allentown). We were stuck in Boulder because our busses had been impounded and were deemed unsafe to be on the road. Many of us fondly remembered this time as "The Death Camp" Oh and the week started out with a bunch of us having money stolen out of our wallets in the gym while we were outside rehearsing - by a janitor who worked a the school. Just par for the season really. He got caught and taken away by the police after asking Sky Corps Director Dale Antoine if they couldn’t just “Work this out.” I may be getting some of these details wrong but here's how I remember the drive to Allentown: After finally leaving Boulder, we stopped in Bloomington, IN to borrow busses from Star of Indiana and still barely made it to Allentown, dropping the remainder (I think) of the Sky Ryder busses along the side of the road, as they broke down one-by-one. At one point, I think we had the members that usually fit on four Sky busses packed onto two Star busses for part of the trip. We even had a breakdown on the way to pre-lims in Allentown. I remember some of the hornline members were all excited and doing mental warmups, singing through the show, etc. on the bus (because we knew we were already supposed to be at the stadium and warming up) - and then KERPLUNK!!! We once again pulled the broken down bus over and began to figure out how we could travel the remaining few miles to compete in DCI East pre-lims. … My dad actually flew from North Carolina to drive the bus for the guard straight from CO to Pa! The guard was actually stranded in CO and we had some "barely able to breath" rehearsals. LOL. I think I remember being on the bus....driving up to the stadium....dressing in the bus....then being lucky enough to perform at Allentown! All I can say is thank God my father was a truck driver and could handle driving that long. I am sure he shared duties with someone....so props to the other person as well. D.
  7. Thanks for the support guys. We are really pumped up about the Open House. Having a great facility like Gateway is really helping with the increase of inquiries to the corps. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. And if you are part of the Chase Giving Program....please vote for Carolina Gold! Dwayne

Our excellent staff will be on hand to make sure that is a positive and educational environment. With an impressive number of returning brass veterans, Gold hopes to present a much larger brass section in 2010. "Building upon our successes from last season is helping to set up higher goals for the 2010 season" states Dwayne Barnes, Executive Director. Most of our design and instructional team is returning for this coming season. Coupled with an outstanding visual team, this staff is one of our strongest in years. Consistency of the caption heads will only further compliment the high numbers of returning veterans. The corps also opened up additional tech positions as well. New performances opportunities are being added this season to keep the corps motivated during the off season. The corps is also purchasing additional front ensemble instruments, as our numbers up front will be increasing this season. It will be a very exciting open house! If you have any questions, please let us know. For more information, please visit our website: www.carolinagold.org
  9. In order to thank the community that has been supporting the corps, Carolina Gold is putting together a parade corps for this event. Alumni members, staff/members of the 2009 corps along with new recruits, will be marching in the parade performing to part of our 2008 show with 5 Gold Rings! And yes, we are still accepting folks to participate with us. You do not have to be an active member of the corps to march with us. For more information on the corps visit our website: www.carolinagold.org For more information on the parade visit their website: http://wsparade.org/2009/index.php
  10. Carolina Gold has been working very hard this fall to finalize our staff positions for the 2010 season. With the return of most of our staff from 2009, the corps is stronger than ever and ready for a successful 2010 season. Our first move was promoting Charles Patton to our Program Coordinating position. Charles came to us last season working with both brass and visual. He is a current band director at Southern Alamance HS and was a former member of the Blue Knights drum and bugle corps. Charles graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And a most interesting fact...he was a contestant on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire this fall. Although I would love to report he won a million, he did leave a winner! An intriguing move for the corps, Gold hired 2 visual caption heads for this season. Our 2 qualified applicants have worked together previously and are very familiar with working with Charles as well. Visual Co-Caption Head: Mike Gillespie A Graduate of Jordan High school in Durham, NC,Mike performed with Carolina Crown in 2002 on Trumpet and continued to perform with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005-2007. He was a soloist in both 2006 and 2007. He holds a bachelors degree in music from Oklahoma University and is currently pursuing his Master of Arts in Teaching At UNC Chapel Hill. Mike is active as a consultant, teacher, and designer throughout North Carolina working with schools such as Green Hope High School, Wakefield High School, Enloe High School, Southern Alamance High School, and Panther Creek High School. Visual Co-Caption Head: Justin Wier A graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Justin was a mellophone player for the Crossmen in 2005 and The Cavaliers in 2007 and 2008. Justin received his bachelors degree in Chemistry from UNC in 2008 and is currently in Law school at Elon University. Justin is active as a teacher and consultant throughout North Carolina having worked with Wakefield High School, Chapel Hill High School, Carrboro High School, Trinity High School, and Western Guilford High School. And finally, our visual tech: Zach VanderElzen Zach graduated from North Buncombe High School and recently aged out of Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle corps as a Lead Baritone Player. He is currrently pursuing a degree in music education and performance and is active as a teacher in North Carolina working with North Buncombe High School as well as the Mars Hill Mountain Lion Marching Band. Welcome aboard to our new visual team. For more information on our corps, visit our website at www.carolinagold.org
  11. Carolina Gold will be represented at the 2009 North Carolina Music Educators Convention in Winston Salem, NC on Sunday Nov. 8-Tuesday, Nov. 10th. We will be hosting an informational booth to introduce Carolina Gold to the music educators of North Carolina. Since being a DCA corps includes all ages in their membership, many attendees will be eligible to be involved. This annual convention is an In-Service Conference for members of the North Carolina Music Educators which include collegiate professors and students, music program directors and students from elementary to high school as well as music business professionals. Attending sessions and concerts as well as observing honors group rehearsals enable teachers to work toward fulfilling license renewal hours and give them the additional tools and information to assist in their music programs. Presentations are also made by nationally known clinicians and houses an extensive exhibitor display.

  17. Thanks to Jay and the Bushwacker organization for a great job running their first show in 6 years. I have ALWAYS associated Bush with being a Class act and that will not change. Jay made sure that Gold had great accommodations and even personally walked over to ask if everything was going OK. Also, he also shared with the other corps directors about the success of his clinic as a way for other organizations to raise additional funds at shows! Congrats to all the groups that performed at the show. And a job well done to Bush! Dwayne C. Gold

  19. I wanted to give a big thanks to the folks from the Grennies who let us use their field lining equipment when our truck was running late. I also would like to say that for anyone that does not know the folks in this organization, they are one classy group. First, you couldn't ask for nicer folks. And second, they stand out as a corps that leaves the competition on the field...not off! It was my pleasure to have met some of the members and staff from this fine organization! I wish you much success for the rest of the season. Sincerely, Dwayne Barnes Executive Director Carolina Gold
