  1. Scott, On 7/5/1971 in Lacrosse, WI (day after Dubuque contest, two days after Wheeling) Santa Clara won, Troopers were second and Madison third. Blue Stars were in judged exhibition as this was their home contest (Mississippi Rhapsody) All three corps you are looking for in that first location, SCV, Scouts and Blue Stars were here (along with Troopers) so this could very possibly be it.
  2. A couple old articles/ads from my collection, thought someone here may enjoy them. Both pieces come from summer/fall issues of the 1974 Poughkeepsie Journal (the first one from September 74 and the second from July 74)
  3. Dan, I think you are correct, I also thought the same thing before I posted it. I even started to write St. Paul's name, but, two things stopped me. The photo is listed as Madison Explorer Scouts 1968. I knew Madison wore the West Point uniforms but I could not remember exactly when they went back to the scout uniform so I thought maybe the photo was tagged correctly. What also threw me off was that St. Paul's around this time wore white ties and not scarfs but the drum colors and striping do match St. Paul's.
  4. Another Scouts photo from around same time period, 69, 70? (may be St Paul, looks like Madison's flags)
  5. St. Patrick's Imperials, bass5 is correct, drum line and rifles in kilts. (drumline 71-73, rifles 71-72) And ajedrummer is correct about the color, the uniform is kelly green. (looks like some faulty film and/or developing in a couple of the previous photos) When they merged into the "Thing" the rifles wore black skirts with the same tops pictured below minus the kilt material coming over the shoulder. (drum line were still in kilts) The 1973 horns and flags wore the Thunderbolts uniform and the drums and rifles wore the Imperials uniform.
  6. Interesting old ad for a contest in Cape Girardeau, Missouri Sept. 2 1953 Does anyone have an exact date for the 1953 American Legion Nationals in St Louis?, I never see one listed anywhere. This ad may help to date it as must have been around the same time.
  7. John, You are quite welcome. I thought it was interesting myself, I love this kind of stuff, have tons of these kind of old articles. In fact, I know I have an article with the very show you mentioned in it, it was in March 1967. Its not an article about the "Big Sounds" show itself, just a brief mention of it in a separate article. I will dig it up it and post it soon.
  8. Came across this article with the following photos from the Nov. 10/1968 Reading Eagle, thought some here may want to see it.
  9. It was in the 1962 Archdiocesan CYO Music Festival program so I think you are correct.
  10. VFW State in Wildwood came first (usually the third weekend of June) and American Legion State at the end of the year (usually the weekend after Labor day)
  11. Knights (Ladies and Gentlemen, could it be, our one and only DCP member tommytimp?)
  12. Are you anywhere near the Health Dept.? Right across from it was the old Bell Tower shopping center. (was really nice once, now kind of run down)
  13. John, Most years the Blue Ridge Tournament of Champions took place at Sirrine Stadium, in 79 and 80 (when Nancy would have been there) Furman was still using this stadium to play football as Paladin Stadium (where they play now) was being built. Even after Furman started using Paladin stadium the show would still be held at Sirrine most of the time. It was not an annual event, besides the two years 27th won (79 and 80) it only took place a few more times(1983 Phantom won) before ending in 1989, or at least that was the last year I went to or heard of a show there. (Garfield won in 88 and 89) The Stadium is still there and last I knew the Greenville HS Red Raiders played their football games there. It has been renovated since the days the contest was there. (renovated early 2000's) On I-85, if you take Church street (Hwy 29, exit 42) heading towards downtown turn right on University Ridge and its right there at Cleveland St. If you come 385 into downtown go past Bi-Lo center to church street, turn left and go to University Ridge then turn left. Its kind of nestled at the base of Cleveland Park. Beautiful setting, and as Nancy mentioned a great well kept up field.
