  1. I remember a St. Pauls scouts from 1964 when they came to a Penn Jersey show in Newark Schools Stadium in Newark, NJ. The had on dark green uni's and oversea's hats. They marched quite well. Never heard about them after that time. Has anyone else ever seen this corps?
  2. Fred Rose???????? Looks like a picture from the 50's. Fred was there way back then.
  3. One of the closest finishes in the history of the Dream at Roosevelt Stadium had to be the senior portion of the 1968 contest. Out of the five senior corps, the top four were only four tenths of a point apart. This was a weird one to say the least. To start with, the Skyliners finished last. Now, whether or not they had a bad show that day, when have you ever seen the Skyliners take last place at a Dream? The Hurc's win, with a very strong Reading coming second. That shook a few nuns in the stands. Cabs take third, and the Sunrisers fourth. Now the outcome looks to be, well, unusual, but remember, only four tenths separate the top four corps. All I remember standing one that field that afternoon at retreat, is how the Hurricanes when announced the winner, just looked around and chuckled as if to say, what the hell just happened. After the shock wore off, and the beer kicked in, it was quite funny to say the least.
  4. Mike, perhaps "Regain their greatness" is a poor choice of words. I apologize. What I meant is to regain favor with the masses and not have to hear negativity. This old schooler started marching in 1960.
  5. I'm old school and have not heard many of the great modern corps in depth, so I'll take your word for the 2000 show. When I hear the new, I must remind myself it is modern day and enjoy the moment. This sounds very classy to say the least, and I hope the Cadets move carefully and regain their greatness. When I say old school, I mean running to the stadium at Randalls Island, hearing Climb Every Mountain and thinking oh no, I'm gonna miss one of the best. This was 1962 friends. They've come a long way baby!
  6. I'm a firm believer in that you come out of the gate softly, build slowly, and explode like the Earth is shaking, to start the opener. This gets the fans to stop sitting on their hands and thinking, why didn't I make that pit stop 20 minutes ago. They could be throwing babies from the stands with this one. I like what I hear so far. I just wish they had told the guy banging on the pipe to leave the room before they started playing.
  7. Yes they did, and here's a little Pow Wow action from 1966: Saturday August 13, 1966 Kingston NY Position Corps Score 1 St. Lucy's Cadets 86.100 2 Bridgeport PAL Cadets 85.550 3 Magnificent Yankees 85.320 4 Toronto Optimists 81.760 5 Garfield Cadets 81.450 6 Bronx Kingsmen 79.400 The Bronx Kingsmen were actually called the NY KIngsmen by then and don't be fooled by the placement or score. Those boys brought some serious heat. That brass line could kill small plants and animals.
  8. There were plenty of junior drum corps on the Island during the 60's that never saw the 70's. Or, late 70's. Let's name a few that weren't at the top of the heap, but provided many members to corps that were. I don't have the dates they ended, but here are a few to be remembered: Babylon Islanders Bellmore Thunderstreaks Lindenaires from Lindenhurst Farmingdale Vanguards Riptides Oceanside Legionaires Bay Shore Red Devils Port Jefferson Portsmen Witness a parade on the Island back during that time, and you could catch many of these corps strutting their stuff. They also had standstill contests for the one's that hadn't turned M&M yet. Now there's a fossil term for ya, (M&M). Many members of the corps that folded went on to help fill the ranks of such legends as the Skyliners, Sunrisers, Blessed Sacrament, Hurricanes, etc. You can take the boy out of the drum corps, but ya can't take the drum corps out of the boy!
  9. Carver Gay Blades with: Uncle Nick Sun Gene Bennett Sun Yeah Baby!
  10. Madonna is too young to have marched in Loretto, but she probably would have fit right in. Imagine Madonna and Pepe on the same bus???????? Lord have mercy!
  11. >Can't go wrong with Slaughter, Dreamgirls, New York State of Mind, Rainmaker, Traffic Jam, Elks Parade & the Signature.< All good choices indeed. Don't forget Charlie Welch from 1966 as well. And throw in a little Alabama Jubilee. That one always worked for Sky. Again, nice stuff, but you take a chance re-hashing the old stuff unless you can come up with a new twist on it. The classics are just that and I tend to think the current day judge would rather bark, "What have you done for me lately". Just MHO.
  12. >Look how their cumber-bun & sashes all line up! That is an awesome picture! < That is very unusual indeed. Did they all have the same parents?????? I remember a contest in Jersey around 1970,71, can't recall the exact year. They showed up with their own busses, tractor trailers etc. They looked like a bunch of millionaires kids. Hollywood tans, the guard all looked liked movie stars. They had class written all over them. Oh, I forgot to mention, they blew everyone off the field that afternoon. They didn't travel 4000 miles to lose ya know.
  13. >Because their execution bordered on the unbelievable.< That's probably the greatest way to put it. If you didn't fall in love with the Troopers marching expertise, you were brain dead. I always said, the worst part about seeing a great corps is that it was all over in a matter of 13 minutes.
  14. The Troopers were second to none! Of course we're going back some years here, but no one, not one corp, absolutely NO CORPS, can match the Troopers company front. This brings back memories from 1965. That front was perfect, as was the rest of the drill. At that time, I believe they had the only perfect 30 points for marching and maneuvering on record. I saw them at St Joe's Patron show in Brooklyn around the late 60's and they were amazing to watch. Rumor had it, that Jim Jones used to blindfold them and put them through the drill. I think it worked. The Troopers could raise dust in a cement parking lot!
  15. Roll off. Now that's something I haven't heard in years young man. Prof
