  1. Written by Charles Vayda, Public Relations, NY Skyliners Alumni (Aug 5, 2013) In 2014, the New York Skyliners Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary. Founded in 1994 by a handful of alumni and friends, the mission of the corps is to preserve the musical and entertainment legacy of the New York Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps as it existed from its inception in 1945, and to foster the interest and encourage the participation in this uniquely American art form. The first parades were the Memorial Day parades in Garfield and Lodi in 1994/1995 with a dozen horns and 4 drums outfitted in red golf shirts, black pants, and baseball caps. 1996/1997 saw the first GAS performance, more parades, and other indoor appearances as the corps continued to grow. On Sept 5 1998, in 105 degrees in Allentown PA, the then 70-man horn line put on an exhibition at the DCA World Championships playing a host of well known, old favorites. In 2000, at the DCA Alumni Spectacular in Syracuse NY, a facsimile of the full uniform worn by the competition corps was unveiled. The white bucks returned at the 2003 Alumni Spectacular in Scranton PA. Together with WDCHoF Carl Ruocco as Show Coordinator, the music committee has put together an exciting new program for the 2014 anniversary season. With the exception of SKY's famous encore piece – "ELK's Parade", the corps will be learning an entire new musical book – spanning the gamut of old favorites, the later years, and for the first time, new music never performed by the NY Skyliners! Arrangements are currently underway in preparation for fall rehearsals. Stay tuned for further announcements outlining the details of the program. The Skyliners Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps is co-sponsored by AL Post 1523 Staten Island NY and VFW Post 4591 Hasbrouck Heights NJ. Rehearsals are held at VFW MEMORIAL POST 4591, 513 VETERANS PLACE, HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ. The corps is seeking former members as well as anyone interested in being a part of this tradition, in all sections – brass, percussion, color guard, and honor guard. 17. AWESOME - Yes indeed. This truly has the makings of something very special. With an influx of new horns, a few more still on he way, our 10 man contra line, powerful percs, an increasing guard, and a superb musical book coupled with excellent instruction and the dedication and earnest of the corps proper, the 2012 version of SKY Alumni D&B Corps looks to be packing a real wallop. Come on down and join the fray !!!
  18. Sunday Dec 4. The Skyliners Alumni Corps 2012 is off to one the best starts in recent memory. With the 2012 music program plans solidified right after DCA, Aquarius is the lone hold over from 2011 and will be used as this year's Opener. The remainder of the horn music book is new with an Opening Fanfare (On The Town), Color Pre (Columbia / Hymn to Victory medley), Concert (Summertime), and Exit (Broadway / New York New York - the 81 Wedge). Following this is, of course, SKY's legendary Signature and an encore of the none other - ELKS parade. With all this new material, this has been a bigger than average learning year for the SKY horn-line, which is under the direction of instructor/DM Joe "JD" Jacob and assistant instructor Bob Farrell. Starting in October, the horn-line commenced learning and absorbing the new book. Today, the Color Pre, the final new ingredient, was introduced and completed in one session. The day began with a new exercise / warm-up program prepared by Bob Farrell, which will be used religiously, going forward, at all rehearsals/gigs. So, with one rehearsal remaining in this year, the 2012 music book has been fully taught and the entire show played (albeit a little rough) in its entirety for the first time. The corps is progressing nicely and ahead of schedule. The drum-line under the direction of Wes Meyers, assisted by Bob "Jomba" O'Conor, is hard at work on 3 drum features, completed Summertime today, and will start the Color Pre at the next rehearsal (Dec 18). So far, this has been a good recruiting season for the corps. SKY has had an influx of new horn players (especially sopranos) as well as some percussion and both new members in the CG and American sections. All in all, 2012 is looking to be an excellent year as SKY continues the tradition of playing the charts of the legendary master Hy Dreitzer. Anyone interested in joining should contact our director Rich Evans at director@skyalumni.org. Please visit our website for information / schedule / directions at http://www.skyalumni.org/,
  19. So a good Open House Sunday at SKY Alumni yesterday. 40+ horns in attendance plus our usual large percussion section sporting 3 keyboards these days. The drumline is working on 2 drum solos and a drum feature (The Doobies "China Grove"). This is a bigger than normal learning year/curve for SKY with a lot of new music. The hornline is answering the challenge and the new Opening Fanfare (from "On The Town"), George G "Summertime", and an Exit medley of Broadway/Frank Sinatra "NYNY" (the '81 Wedge) are pretty much fully baked. The hornline has absorbed the new material remarkably well in what amounts to 3 rehearsals. Hence, we are ahead of our own schedule permitting us to turn our attention to our final learn for 2012 - the Color Pre. We will be working Columbia/Hymn to Victory (from '76) this coming Sunday while polishing the rest. Aquarius is being retained from last year and has been moved to the top of the show while, of course, our Signature and ELKS are staple items. All in all, a good day in SKY land and in what is shaping into being a real good year - 2012.
  20. YUP, it's this Sunday. Come on down and just sit in and play. We not gonna make you join. We're just looking to get rid of the free food/beer.
  21. Ray, You can come and stay at my house and I'll drive to Bayonne. How's that? But I'll need to stay far away from the cooler !!!
