I worked in our Central Office in DC seems like eons ago 78 - 80.  Had a retired friend in Watsontown and his son-and-law worked at USP Lewisburg.  It was back in the day when we got our only information through  Drum Corps World.  Saw there was a DCA show at Bucknell (Cavalcade of Champions) so I scheduled a visit and took the friends with me to the Bucknell (Lewisburg) show.   First time for a DCA show was excited and impressed.  I saw the Westshoremen, Hawthorne, Bucks, T-Birds etc.  You had to be playing then so thanks for the show, I was humming pieces for years.  Even had the old Fleetwood vinyl's  Optimists, CMCC Warriors etc. carried me through some difficult moments between show fixes.  Thanks again for the memories.

Thank you for the kind words. Stay healthy and safe!

You, Jim and @Jeff Ream are the same. Born into this stuff.  If there is no drum corps this year, it will be the first year he hasn’t attended a show in 67 years.  Except the year he was in Cambodia (1975) courtesy of Uncle Sam.
It will be 52 years for me.  I’m sure I’ll go into some kind of funk.

I actually marched in the Westshoremen with Jeff Ream's father. Additionally, Jeff's father and my father knew each other for years. Drum corps has literally been an important part of my life since birth. Stay safe and healthy Terri!

  3. I have no idea. Drum corps has been a part of my life. My father marched in drum corps and consequently I was at my first show when I was 3 weeks old! I literally grew up in a drum corps family. I marched in the Westshoremen (my father was on the board) for several years, I marched in the Reading Buccaneers for close to 20 years, and I met my wife there. Drum corps has been a life long passion for me. And sadly, my favorite corps (the Cadets) is finally poised to make a comeback this season. If the season is cancelled, I will miss it dearly!

I think they are doing their best to provide helpful information as the situation unfolds in real time.  And as important as it is to heed their advise in general, we are all individuals with unique circumstances and should not become so dependent on the letter of their statements that we stop applying our own best judgement to our own unique situations.

The voice of reason...very refreshing! Thank you sir.

What are your Top 3 Cadets shows since 2000 and why?

    1. 2000 - Legendary show, really solid corps, top to bottom. Great show to see live...what a night that was!

    2. 2005 - One of the coolest shows I have ever seen. Attended their rehearsal a week before finals and they were scary good. You could just feel a championship!

    3. 2007 - My attitude about this one has really changed over time. Honestly, did not like some of the narration; however, probably one of, if not the best corps I have ever seen. And they really nailed their finals performance. I do believe they were the best corps at finals and they probably lost because of the narration.

  6. Once again this thread devolves. Is there any point in rehashing the Cadets poor design choices? Anyone with half of a brain is well aware of the Cadets design failures. Maybe some day this thread will actually promote the future of the Cadets. Funny that some of the same posters who shame the mention of Hopkins keep going on about his poor design choices. I better just shut up before I get banned from this site.

When you say - work to do - are you meaning financially?  Or at the marching members side of it, such as talent, preparation, things like that?  Or some of both?  I’m getting hints the most work to do is in the administration/financial health side of the house versus the on-the-field product. Is that how you see it?

All corps have work to do this time of the year. However, the most important work right now (for the future sustainment of the Cadets organization) is on the admin/financial side of the house.

You have your sunshine pumpers and your dark clouds here. Is there no one who can provide a neutral assessment of things?

I'm not sunshine pumpers or dark clouds. But I have been to every camp (except the Florida camp) and the Cadets are in very good shape. And that's the simple truth...not an agenda. Does the management team have work to do? Yes they do; however, this team is qualified and ready to move upward. I have more faith in the current management team and staff than probably...ever!

Thanks for the update. It seems to have covered the items I would expect at such a webinar. They have a lot of work ahead, but it seems they are moving the "front of the house" forward while at the same time working on the "back of the house". I would doubt much of the back information would be released until it is 100% finalized and in operation.

Thank you sir for the reasonable response to the Cadets webinar. The cynicism about this organization is really sad. I have faith in the current team and believe they are on a positive trajectory. Feel free to insult me if you want.

How can anyone compare at this point at all. I think the point was just being made spots open doesn't equate to poor quality. Especially in February

I do know from friends on staff at the Cadets that the brass staff is not settling for members with lower levels of talent. They are being patient and not rushing to fill the brass line. The Cadets are determined to build a great brass line.

I think we've all been around drum corps long enough to know that camps are assigned as "mandatory" and then request after request arrive asking to be excused and the ideal/purpose of the rehearsal changes. With poorer turnout I doubt we'll see a Cadets "brass camp" in FL next year. Just a hunch

Cadets brass are not full. They are announcing a "few" spots remain. I don't think "a few" means 30.

However many corps have a "few spots" available right now. Crown for example has a few sop spots.

There's a webinar on Thursday night - perhaps we'll get a public update on the spots available

Cadets are clearly in rebuilding mode - and that's fine. The schedule will help. Several vets headed to BD, Crown & Boston from what I've heard

Also - this day and age missing camps and asking for a pass is MUCH more common. I run restaurants - "callouts" and "requests off" are probably ten times as common among young people than missed-shifts were 15-20 years ago. Culture has changed frankly, and not in a positive way for dependability sake

I watched the alumni webinar last night. Denise Bonfiglio announced that the Cadets percussion and pit are full and all are contracted, the brass line has a few open spots and they gained a couple new members at the camp this weekend, and the guard is 50% (which is ahead of this time last season) contracted.

Without USBands and the revenue they brought in, the Cadets debt would have been far deeper than it was. It cannot be overstated how important that band circuit has been to them. Those "shared" bank accounts sure did come in real handy over the years whenever the Cadets had some big bills to pay, make no mistake about it.

Yes, the revenue from US Bands helped offset some of the poor financial management for the Cadets. I would be worried if Hopkins was still in charge and they separated from US Bands. With that said, Hopkins is not calling the shots anymore and the current team has a wealth of financial management experience. They are and will use that experience wisely. The Cadets (on and off the field) are on a positive trajectory that will pay off.

The point of this is the irony of what was said when another corp from the northeast had camps in Fla.

A large departure from their NJ /PA. roots and history!

Don't know what was said about another corps from the northeast having camps in Florida...don't really care either. All I care about is that the Cadets are finally headed in a positive direction and they are starting to move past the Hopkins crisis!

And where is the Cadets brass camp this weekend?????

    FLA.

And your point is? And if you really think the Cadets are going to be a feeder corps for anyone, you obviously have not been to any camps this year. The current Cadets are far from a feeder corps for anyone.

I have no idea what the news from YEA/Cadets/DCI or whatever will be, but if it is "bad news" (whatever that may be) they need to release it.

Bad news NEVER get better with age.

It is actually good news for the future of the Cadets.

    exactly

When Hopkins was involved everything from show concepts to big organizational needs / announcements was released half-baked and stream-of-consciousness

It makes me feel very reassured that the adults now in charge are thinking things through, crossing-t's and dotting i's before announcements. Everyone complained in the past there was too much half-baked stuff announced - now it's "where is my update??"

    Good point sir!

What first hand information?  “Wait until DCI / YEA / Cadets release information” does not constitute providing first-hand information.

There have been several on this thread who have presented first-hand information. The information didn't support the doom and gloom agenda and was mostly ignored. I am pumped for the 2020 Cadets! Have a great day sir!

This is probably the most honest answer. You interpret discussion of the present situations as people hoping for the demise of the corps. I throw the B.S. flag at that.

No, I interpret those who refuse to accept first-hand information as people hoping for the demise of the corps. You can pick the flag up now.
