  1. IN essence, it sounds kind of similar to how backpressure works in car exhausts. The straighter the tubing, with fewer bends, the less backpressure and more horsepower.
  2. I almost killed Tom Aungst (and myself) one summer...
  3. Knew that was coming...but that's intuition...not even an anecdote. But, I'd like to see the link too
  4. Well, I'll tell you one thing...SCV had a kick-### drum book...I thought they were better than many lines "above" them scores wise. But I have a feeling they were dinged for not playing enough flam patterns. Show me another line that's playing 4 on a hand like SCV. Maybe they should have added flam drags along with some monkey drumming?
  5. The anecdote is while standing in front of a Bb hornline that something feels like it's missing. THoughts like... "Why does this hornline not sound like it used to?" "Were they louder last year?" "Wait, they finished their show and my ears aren't bleeding. What's the problem?" "Hey, I thought drum corps went to 11?" Of course, maybe brass players will be able to explain it a little better than me ;) I just bang on things and make noise
  6. I thought we were trying to market to the youth in this activity? LOL
  7. Well, then I will keep my fingers crossed for a top 10 corps to bring the Star G-style sound back :)
  8. True, but this thread is about volume, which the advantage rests squarely with G-bugles.
  9. Well, I will take an awesome sounding G hornline anyday. And, the fact that Pioneer was deemed to be "uncompetitive" with G bugles is more of a comment on Pioneer than G bugles, I think. So, how has Pioneer done since switching to Bb? I am hoping for an awesome drum corps to use G bugles at some point in the future with DCI. Actually, "hope" is the wrong word...
  10. Not irrelevant. Why are we bringing in the least common denominator? To lower the bar? When I talk about this activity, I think about the best. Obviously, others are coming at it from a different angle.
  11. Do Coats still perform home shows at Massilon High School?
  12. Ok, let me ask this. Would you take a great sounding G line over a great sounding Bb line? For me, the loss of G is greater than whatever gains come with Bb. Give me a Star of Indiana any day over Bb, no matter who is playing.
  13. To me, the "benefits" of Bb does not outweight a great sounding hornline full of G bugles :)
  14. Saying "Musical judges demanding musical intonation and solid pitch center" implies that it was, heretofore, unseen. Or missing. Or any number of other words used to describe that. So, I was suggesting that those 4 years of Star had both of those things when your above quoted statement seemed to suggest otherwise.
  15. Lee, I will respectfully agree to disagree with that as, in my mind, it eliminates anything unique about drum corps. :)
  16. I agree and disagree. Head On is a very effective ad that does a HORRIBLE job of building a brand. Good with sales. Does nothing for the brand long term. I think marketing drum corp different than band is ENTIRELY the way to go. "You think you've seen a marching band? You haven't seen anything, until you've seen a drum corps" kind of thing. The minute you associate marching band with drum corps, the thing that sticks in the consumers mind is marching band...and that's NOT what DCI needs in order to attract a non-traditional drum corps audience. You have to create mystique. You have to entertain (OMG, you mean in order to attract consumers you have to put a product on the field they'll want to see again? WTF?!?!). And you have to create buzz (Person A: OMG, I saw a drum corps show this weekend. We have to go next time they're in town! Person B: Drum corps, what's that? Person A: It's kinda like marching band, but different! Way better! You just have to come see!!!) Anyway, that's what this employee of an ad agency thinks anyways.
  17. Don't disturb the ostrich brigade. You might ruffle their feathers some more.
  18. Yeah, because Star '90, '91, '92 and '93 were so horrible in both those categories
  19. 1991 Bluecoats. Very cute, day-glo lime green boogers. That was LOUD, visually.
  20. You have either A) Never dated a super-hot chick or B) Dated the wrong ones
  21. I sense sarcasm and a dig at b-flat hornlines...and I approve of both of those things.
  22. One of the first things I would tell people when talking about drum corps is "It IS NOT marching band. Drum corps is cool. Marching band is not." Those days, it seems, are coming closer to an end. And I still think the Marching Music's Major League is a lame line. I could write DCI a better one (since that's what I do for a living), but my day rate ain't cheap :) Then again, that line is the least of DCI's problems.
  23. <cough> bull#@% <cough> Percussion. Brass. Colorguard. That's what drum corps is. "Adding instrumentation" only homogenizes the product and eliminates any unique point between drum corps and marching band. Obviously that last point is lost on you. Hey, why don't you go add a sax to a brass quintet. Only problem is, you couldn't call it a brass quintet anymore...much like you couldn't call drum corps drum corps.
