  1. Wow, after all the bashing, it seems that people think that The Cadets had a pretty good show after all. I agree; while not a fan of the narration (JUST MY OPINION) I really loved the show otherwise. Actually, I think the introductory narration was really cool . . . a chill goes down my spine every time I hear all the narrators together say "We believe in . . . NOW."
  2. Never mind, didn't realize it was right there on dci.org.
  3. Sorry, bit off-topic, but what's the member cap for Open Class corps?
  4. Jersey Surf: 8:00 Saturday 11/24 - 3:00 Sunday 11/25 Camden County Technical School, Cross Keys Road, Sicklerville, NJ Cost: $75.00
  5. Are you talking about whether or not Surf will make World Class? And what do you mean "more regional?"
  6. I thought the intro narration was awesome, actually. When used as an effect, like it was in the beginning, speech can be pretty cool. I agree though, kick-### music in that show.
  7. I think he means "gospel" as in "something hotly debated" rather than "the irrefutable truth." Which isn't really a legitimate use of the term, unless he's looking to confuse people.
  8. He's referring to the fact that, standing at attention in a block, a drum corps with woodwinds and a marching band would look essentially the same. Once they start moving and playing, of course the drum corps will be superior in pretty much all respects (unless it's a kick ### marching band.)
  9. OK, I said they were valid reasons, not necessarily that those reasons alone were enough to keep woodwinds out of DCI. Sorry if that's what you thought I meant. You haven't provided any specific counters to those reasons at all, leading me to believe that you cannot actually come up with logical refutations, instead refusing to acknowledge those reasons at all. If you do have a rebuttal, please, state it. Geez, I can't believe I'm even posting this, everybody on DCP and their mother knows you're the most stubborn guy on here. I can admire that, in a way.
  10. OK, so his word choice may have been a little harsh. They're still all valid reasons to keep woodwinds out of DCI.
  11. I don't see why any corps would ever wear yellow. It's freaking garish.
  12. I think you mean "why not create the illusion . . ." but yeah. That is definitely one of the coolest show concepts I've ever heard.
  13. Wow, I'm impressed at how well you guys held back from a flame war there. Congratulations. I like most of Trip's suggestion's . . . to those of you in favor of woodwinds, it just wouldn't work. You simply can't generate as much sound on a woodwind. I feel that if woodwinds were made legal, nothing would change; most corps would stick with all brass hornlines to max out the volume. I especially agree with the "stop taking a symphonic approach" suggestion; I appreciate that shows are meant to be challenging and fast and all that, but I want to walk out of the stadium whistling the closer from the Vanguard show, or singing the awesome Blue Devils trumpet solo. Give me something I can point to and not simply say "wow, nice job," but "that was freaking AWESOME." Case in point - anyone remember Southwind '05? The show where the entire brass line put down their horns and chanted for a few bars? Yeah, I thought that was pretty much the coolest thing ever; I was let down by how distinctly less awesome Carolina Crown's show was later that night. The music doesn't necessarily have to be all that recognizable, but for crying out loud, make it cool. Amplification really just isn't necessary, especially when you have a 12-person pit. Just sayin'.
  14. Er . . . isn't Southwind going inactive for the 2008 season?
  15. Yeah, pretty much. Certainly on the hotel point. You've gotta remember that HS bands aren't as hardcore as DCI.
  16. YEAH AARON GOLDBERG. He's the band camp brass tech at my high school. He's so cool.
  17. Sounds cool, but it would probably be quite awkward for battery since they wear the carriers under their uniforms. It would be cool to have, say, half the brass line put their horns down and play taiko drums along the sidelines (something like what the Blue Devils battery did this past year.)
  18. I hope to audition for Jersey Surf on snare . . . problem is, I've got winter drumline from January to the beginning of April; scheduling conflicts much? Anyone here live in the DC area who might be able to give me a ride? That'd sure make my parents a lot more open to me going the first weekend (Thanksgiving.) Any former Surf members have an estimate on what the first weekend costs? By the way, anyone going for Crown percussion? I didn't see any, but I might have missed one. I ask because my high school's percussion caption head is a pit tech there - in fact, he's the one that recommended Jersey Surf to me when I mentioned that I was interested in doing corps.
  19. Fun game: try to post a YouTube comment so stupid that people realize you must be joking. (Hint: this is impossible) -xkcd (http://xkcd.com)
  20. Heh, Krypton's our opener this year. Wow, those are all really cool ideas ('cept for maybe the "reduce the battery size" one . . . so many people would miss out!) I saw a show at USSBA nationals last year that was Civil War-based; it was brass and tenors (Union) versus woodwinds and the rest of the battery and pit (Confederacy). I also saw Oakton HS do a baseball-themed show back in '05, where they were all in baseball uniforms; it was pretty cool. Unique pit placements (center of the field, both sides) might be a simple way to mix things up. On the topic of the "variable show" (which I think is probably the coolest idea EVAR), I think that might be cool for the Crossmen to do; they could use their "cross" set as the base. When you said "Frisbee" I thought "drumhead;" it might be cool to have one of the tenors start out with a broken head, then take it off and throw it around before grabbing a new set of tenors from the sideline. That would probably only work in one of those shows about the season itself, though; I can't think of any other appropriate context.
