  1. Sounds like a great name for when the G7 decides to spin itself off.
  2. Work for who? There's no way the World Series helps anyone outside the G7.
  3. The finances look good for the G7 corps. What's missing is the negative impact the "World Series" would have on the other 16 World Class corps. The G7 have a responsibility to nurture those corps as well, as the talent and competition they provide is essential in keeping the G7 alive. Two of the G7 used to be such lowly corps that needed the high visibility of the top players.
  4. True. I'd rather not see DCI get destroyed in the process of their market experiment, though. It's also possible to stop dumb things before they happen.
  5. When is the last time you went? I think the shows this year are overall far less offensive to old-timers than they have been since amplified voice was allowed. In fact, the message I hear from the boards is exactly what I've been thinking: this is one of the most entertaining years in a long time. I appreciate your fear. I feel it, too, with electronics and the G7 and George Hopkins being tired of drum corps. But you should keep giving it a chance, and ignore what the haters say.
  6. I don't get it. Are the big corps hurting for talent on the brass lines? Hopkins is always trying to up the age limits... I'm also surprised he straight out was calling for woodwinds. I didn't realize he was being that direct about it. But wouldn't the better solution to all the expenses and demand for talent be to simplify? Eliminate electronics and amps and you save equipment money, transportation money, and you need fewer staff. Cut back to a smaller corps size you save a ton in food, instruments, and uniforms. Make props illegal, and remove the temptation to add that expense.
  7. I'd rather have a commentator (or more than one) who actually admits to disliking some things. You can read between the lines and tell that Boo doesn't care for SCV's show or Little Jeffrey or Crown's color choices, but I'd rather he were straight up honest. The relentless positivity from official DCI outlets (Boo's liveblogs and the Field Pass podcast) grate on my nerves after a while. I'd rather Boo say he doesn't like SCV's show this year, and have someone else on who loves it alongside.
  8. Apparently Michael Boo thinks girls can't do pushups?
  9. From Twitter: _katiekins Daaaaamn Carolina Crown, y'all need a "second chance" on those ugly ### velour uniforms! #DCI #drumcorps #quarterfinals
  10. Re being bored by Phantom's show: I love the music, but when I've seen them live yeah it wasn't gripping.
  11. Whoever is posting scores here on DCP skipped Blue Stars.
  12. No offense to Colts, but I have never enjoyed "True Colors" in a drum corps setting.
  13. 1. Blue Stars 2. The Cavaliers 3. Santa Clara Vanguard 4. Madison Scouts 5. Bluecoats 6. Phantom Regiment 7. Boston Crusaders 8. Carolina Crown 9. The Cadets 10. Blue Knights 11. Blue Devils 12. Glassmen Blue Stars music and theme this year are just outstanding, and the Cavaliers sucked me in every time I saw them this year with pure energy. I was a major Crown fanboy coming into this season, but their show hasn't clicked with me, entertainment-wise, despite my love of the music. Maybe it just reminds me of their 2009 show too much without hitting the sweet spot that one did.
  14. I think "Friends of DCI" or perhaps 2010 purchasers have already had an opportunity to request tickets. Some around here are speculating DCI wants to lock in people as soon as possible before any possible G7 meltdown, and so I'd expect a public offering not too long after finals. Possibly around the time CDs or DVDs are released to maximize "synergy".
  15. Depends, really. This document is just the formalization of the world-series portion of the original powerpoint. The other parts may be in other documents we haven't seen yet.
  16. Sorry, I agree. I was just echoing what I took to be the message of the proposal text.
  17. I don't subscribe to objectivism, but I'm not making a moral claim about the rights of these corporations. The Cavaliers have the right to leave DCI or do what they can to blow it up from within, sure. Mandarins have no moral claim on the cachet The Cavaliers have built up over the decades. But I hope that income to the Cavaliers organization is not the only metric by which the Cavaliers board makes these decisions. I'm just arguing about the practical effects. I think this World Series idea will hurt the chances of survival for many DCI corps. I think that a healthy DCI and a growing group of World Class corps is good for drum corps as an activity and good for the G7. I would like a healthy drum corps ecosystem to continue to be viable and to grow. If this is just about pure capitalism, then drum corps will not last in any form.
  18. It's not clear to me that anything about this proposal requires approval from DCI. It certainly isn't phrased that way. Maybe we don't have enough context about what this document actually is.
  19. In the short term, yes, the G7 could earn more money on their own... at the expense of every other corps in DCI. Long term if DCI falls apart or if most of the non-G7 World Class corps collapse, the G7 will have less and less of a base of talent, fans, and recognition to build upon. But who knows, maybe it could work for 10 or 20 years. Maybe they'll become the next Medieval Times.
  20. The opening paragraph of the G7 proposal: What do you think they're getting at here. "Other idioms" could mean sports, video games, or movies. Or combined with the mentions of "audience interactive" and "broad range of performance arts", maybe it's something else. What are your guesses, hopes, or fears for what's going on here. Are they just going to market it more as a "world series" sports type event? Are they going to find some new way to entertain the audience between performances? Maybe battery face-offs with audience voting? I actually think that would be kind of cool. Or are they going to let Hopkins put on the stage plays he's been yearning to do during the 15-minute Cadets preshow? Maybe it's all just code for double-reeds. Contrabassoons FTW!
  21. If the Bluecoats don't pull it off at Finals, then the next most likely scenarios are Cavaliers pulling a miracle at Finals or fielding a better show in 2011. After that I'd rate the likelihood of Cadets, SCV, or Phantom storming back to the top next year as the next most likely, and finally Crown or Bluecoats in 2011.
