Another suggestion- Hermitage HS in Henrico VA (Richmond area).  Concrete stands; plenty of parking, easy access from interstate.

Unfortunately for most VA high Schools, the stadiums are too small.  Annapolis has drawn well in the past.  They need a stadium with a similar capacity and most VA high schools just don't have that.

Annapolis is a 4.5 hr drive (or more depending on DC traffic) each way.   Maybe I’m being selfish, but I really don’t want the distance to increase.

Warrenton VA HS used to host shows in early 00s.  Southwest of DC.  Is there a reason that show couldn’t be moved to VA?  Or is the tour in even more of a rut that I thought?

The school that hosted in Warrenton lost a ton of money the last year they hosted. Annapolis picked up that show after a year off. I hosted corps for both Warrenton and Annapolis during this time frame.

Remember, this is the only show in the DC area and I have to believe DCI would still like to keep it in the area. Just limited stadiums big enough with turf fields.

Ok re stands; point of order that if you are driving I-85 from W-S, in Richmond turn east on I-64 & Williamsburg is about an hour.  Closer than Annapolis.   And if you go another 45 min there is Old Dominion & Christopher Newport.  And in Richmond there is U of Richmond.  Plus some big HS stadiums.

It wouldn’t bother me to have a show within an hour or two vs 4-5 hrs to Annapolis

The follow-on of travel is also in play. The next run would be up to Philly and Allentown.

This particular show is when I hosted corps over the years.  I am hopeful  the schools I worked with can still support hosting since I retired (if you can retire as a volunteer) right before COVID.

If you expand the circle there is College of William & Mary in Williamsburg VA.  Gorgeous place

My daughter did her under-grad at W&M.  The issue there is a very short height of stands.  I've seen high schools in Virginia with taller stands than W&M.

It's also not an easy drive from Winston-Salem (Crown show the day prior) to the Tidewater area.

That week is getting tough for us in the Northeast.  The show in Glassboro at Rowan Univ was also refunded due to emergency field turf replacement. I was refunded this week for that.  Two shows in the same week, days apart, now looking for a new home.

There are a few stadiums as possibilities.  University of MD has a turf field and hosted finals in 2000 may be an option.  Towson University is also a turf field in Baltimore.

Both NFL stadiums nearby are grass and I doubt DCI would go there.

  6. I just received this email from DCI regarding the Annapolis show:

    TBD MD

    PRESENTED BY: USBands

An unforeseen scheduling conflict with Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will unfortunately necessitate the relocation of this year’s DCI Annapolis event to another venue.

As a current ticket holder for this event, we will be refunding your purchase in full. Please allow 3-5 business days for the refund to show on your card on file after Monday, April 15. No additional action will be necessary on your part.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and while we don’t have any additional details at this time, we are in the process of evaluating suitable alternative locations. We will be happy to keep you informed of any updates in the coming weeks.

To thank you for your patience and loyalty, we will provide you with an opportunity to order tickets for the new event location before they are offered to the general public.

I wonder if they would let corps use Sam's Club as well?  Costco next?

Most corps have a membership at Costco or Sams. The corps I have hosted over the years made a run to one or the other each time they were at our site.  That covers the mass purchases for the corps as a whole, such as food truck necessities.

As far as individual members, that would be a hit or miss.  The frequency and locations of these "Club" facilities don't match the location quantities of a WAL-MART as well.

Full disclosure: I’m not a Walmart fan and avoid it like the plague. I also never heard of Walmart Health until today. CVS has minute clinics and there are plenty of Urgent Care facilities in my area so perhaps there’s not a market for it in my neck of the woods. My question is what kind of care do you receive at a store where self checkouts are now the norm, finding employees who can actually help can be difficult, and the company has a reputation for underpaying employees who are not valued? Are corps better off only relying on Walmart Health as a back up?

~5,200 Walmarts across the US, mostly super-stores with pharmacies and many with eye-care.

~9,000 CVS locations across the US; only 1,100 ('23) have walk-in Minute Clinics with staff on hand.

Personal observations of reading corporate material:

CVS is finishing a major corporate restructuring because of a 37% decline in profit mid-2023.

CVS laid off 5,000 employees (~2% of total 300,000 US employees) in Aug, 2023.

CVS's "New Store" data seems to focus on senior health.

Walmart is converting stores to a completely new format (more of a "town market" design including home goods, expanded groceries, etc

CVS has some food stuffs but on a very limited basis.  No home goods, tools, etc.

Walmart plans include building or converting 150 stores in 2024.  CVS is still closing locations.

Walmart employs ~1.1 million people in the US

CVS  has a stock market value of ~$87 billion

Walmart has a stock market value of ~$485 billion (including non-US operations)

Walmart health locations include eye care

Considering all of the variety of products/services/consumables that modern day drum corps need to get down the road, it seems to me that Walmart offers a better one-stop opportunity for the activity than do CVS.  Importantly, drive to your local CVS and see if you can fit a drum corps caravan into their parking lot; almost every Walmart has plenty of room for the whole circus with lots of parking left over.  Also, most Walmart locations are NOT in center-city but, instead, are on major highways just outside of town - another access tick in favor of Walmart.

While Walmart has lots of turnover, they also employ lots more and very importantly (IMO) give MANY more people the chance to get into a job and on the ladder of success.  Also, CVS carries their DEI credentials proudly on their corporate mission (with most policies proven ineffective and profit-robbing) while Walmart chooses to hire lots of people from all walks of life while sticking to its knitting of driving profits on being the low-cost provider.  In my experience, Walmart actually provides DEI-type policies and doesn't have to brag about it for Wall St or social acceptance points.

When (if) we add in the benefits of Sam's club bulk purchasing (not even available through CVS), to my eye this is a great win for the activity and with the best-possible partner to pull it off effectively.

Lastly, and most importantly, at Walmart today's kids can experience what BITD drum corps was like by getting $1.50 hot dog or slice with a drink!  Walmart keeps tradition alive!, am I right?

It concerns me when people put their political beliefs ahead of the safety of students and corps.  I would rather have quick access to a walk-in clinic at a WAL-MART than spend time searching for a CVS that might have a clinic and that someone is actually there at the clinic.

garfield clearly laid out the facts. Availability and access is clear.  CVS just doesn't have the numbers.

    :soapbox:

DCI WACO just added to the schedule.  @Hook'emCavies may have to drive a little north if the Houston show doesn't get flushed out.  Cavies will be in WACO.

It looks like WACO is replacing Central TX on the same night as Denton.  Houston is still on the schedule for the following night.

The first two California shows of the season is listed on the DCI website as "San Diego area and Los Angeles area" so us SoCal fans are in the same boat you are in.

I saw the announcement for the San Diego/Rose Bowl change.  I actually like what they are doing with two shows in one location.

I am just getting more concerned that DCI has not said a peep about where the Houston show will actually take place.  Are they having that much trouble finding a location for a historically strong show?

  11. Seems like another good year to do the Texas Triangle.  Tickets have been purchased for Denton, San Antonio and Mesquite.  If only they could release the Houston information.

What makes this year all the more interesting is the MLB All-Star game is in Dallas the night after Mesquite. Home Run Derby in Arlington or Drum Corps in Mesquite????
