  1. the '78 line was very loud too. I remember warming up near them at GA tech that year. Holy ####.

The thing about 79/80 Spirit hornline that I remember was that on occasion, if the hornline was warming up close enough to the field where a lesser  :( (hate to use that term) corps was performing, they would on occasion drown the performing corps out!!!

Sorry, that's not too p.c., but it's how uncle z's grey matter recalls it!!

Anybody else recall that "otherworldly" mellophone sound at the beginning of "Higher and Higher"??

  2. Congrats to you and him!

Take it from another parent. You really have to ignore some of this stuff. I've had people I marched with tell me things like "junior corps sucks" or "I don't like Cap Sound".

I had to bite my tongue (I almost bit the ###### thing off!) but I never gave them the satisfaction of a response.

That's my kid that plays the solo. This is his first year with SCV and I'm as proud of him as a Dad can be.

I really don't take anything you say too seriously though. I've read many of your comments on quite a few threads and it goes from ripping the visual staff to tearing into their music. You must be a very sad and lonley person that was hurt real bad to say the things you have said about the group you were once part of.

  3. I recommend '79 Guardsmen HIGHLY (no I did NOT march that year, '78 was my last year)

You will hear some awesome horn playing from all sections.

Looks like I've got a lot of baritone players to check out:

    1. This Pooh Bear guy

    2. 93 Blue Devils guy

    3. 74 Madison GBTC

    4. 78/79 Guardsmen

  4. Thanks for the review. I would be drawn and quartered had it been written by TerriDitt57.

I had some problems myself with the visual program of SW when I saw them in Normal. I have to agree, it is only partially performance issues.

I am looking forward to SCV. A lot of friends of mine in Renegades think I'll love them!

  5. I'll chime in for Pooh Bear too. and Clay Wachholz.  Just listen to '88 Mad Scouts and his solo in Malaguena.

and for two guys I marched with:

Dale Warren  and Rick Moss, late '70's Guardsmen.

Rick is the guy who played the terrific solo in  "Tiger of San Pedro" in '79.

I still think he is the most awesome baritone player I ever heard. (and a fabulous trombone player)

    73.450 Southwind

AGAIN a show the judges are not giving credit to .. lots of power, energy. but the judges must be sipping cherry and waiting for the bigger corps to look at. the drums rocked the horn line was great .. the drill was so so no real risk moves in the show.. but i liekit a lot....

  8. Well you didn't hear it from moi but I'm sure you could find that on kazaa. I'm positive in fact........

    (Secret Agent woman)

My dad grew up near chicago, and he always wanted to march with the Royal Airs but he never got the chance.  My Aunt however, marched with their guard.  They had one show in particular that they wanted to hear; Casino Royale.  Anybody know where I could find a recording of this?

    Austin

  9. - The lack of comments on the Royal Airs is no reflection on your performance. Remember that most corps members missed you, as they were assembling for finale. From where I was, you guys won the high-decibel award for the night, and I was surprised at how well you recreated that drum solo from '75 Cavaliers' show.

It's not that surprising. Most of those guys marched in Cavaliers in the '70's.

  10. So he didn't like Southwind. I can live with that. They have bit off a lot to chew and until it's cleaned up, there isn't going to be a whole lot of clarity.

I understand that, and I'm not trying to "police" anything. I'm just quite frankly tired of all the negativity about this corps. I don't hear as many reviewers being as negative about the others and I know there are some that aren't all that either. I will give an honest review after I see them all this weekend. Count on it. No sugar coating from me. No more of this nice talk. OH I see where he didn't like Southwind either. Anyway...just noticing things...no "policing" from me decompressed. I don't understand why you made that last comment. Were you making it to me? I'm not the one who reports things to moderators when someone makes a comment I don't agree with. I know people have the right to their opinions.

  12. I'd really love to know what's going on with them. I know they were dirty at Normal and it seems to me that some of this should be getting cleaned up and the score should be going up (not down like last night)

A little distressing to say the least.

It was a great show.....a few comments to add, I also missed Teal Sound due to the parking arrangements. We had good seats though....a little over halfway up on side a 40 yard line.

    Southwind

I agree on this one, nothing very memorable. new unis look pretty good, just such a sudden and drastic change for them. When I hear of Southwind, yellow just comes up in my head. There's no hint of yellow so it's a total departure from the previous image. That's not a bad thing but I just didn't even know who they were when I first saw them. Very nice effort, but the hornline isn't anything like I recall hearing of recent years. Although, I never really could catch them at a good vantage point since I was a marching member of Spirit the last 2 years.

  13. did he mention the mosquitoes?

No one liked them (me either).

I know the honor guard wants to thank Art Green of the Royal-Airs honor guard for the loan of his OFF. He saved them (and me) from total suckage. (by mosquitoes)

Art, I know you aren't reading this, but those who are, Art is one of the great guys of drum corps. Learn his name, OK?

    Domo arigato. :silly:
