  1. I notice nearly half of the votes went to SCV 2009 - which was a great show. I offer up a side poll - if you remove the 50 second final push and chord of the Appalachian Spring, would the other 90% of the show be in the top 3 of this poll? It's hard voting on these - especially when thinking about how the visual portions/demands of the shows throughout the last 10 years have evolved as much as they have. Music has too, but IMHO to a lesser degree. I put SCV 2003 (drumline, overall energy), Phantom 2004 (music, hornline!), and SCV 2009 (emotion, not afraid to play soft to captivate) in my top 3, with really any of those being number 1. Since I had to choose, I voted SCV 2003...exciting show!
  2. p.s. scores and recaps are up edit: no recap: just a faulty link
  3. I whole-heartedly agree! My issue is with the balance of numbers. It sort of blends in with the other stuff but I think in my first post I mentioned I wasn't surprised at all by the percussion score - SCV drums are rocking this year.
  4. I partially agree, it just seems like in this case, the fact that one group can win GE Music and Ensemble Music, and another can win Brass and Percussion, seems odd. You play well together, blend well, nice cohesion, nice flow, nice effect, design and pacing. But as far as your hornline is concerned and your drumline, not so much. The opposite is also funky for SCV - according to tonight, great hornline sound and performance, great drumline performance, but cohesion/blend, not so much. Upon looking at the sheets, I guess one could say that tonight, SCV had a much stronger sense of musicianship and also uniformity of sound AND technique in the hornline, stronger percussion musicianship as well as uniform style, but weaker ensemble clarity as a whole? Oh my head. No one said it was easy, and no one said it was the best system, but sometimes I just shake my head. I'm neither here nor there with the results, as I wasn't at the show. But had I been - I bet my ensemble music winner would have been A) much closer in the brass and percussion scores, or B) my brass and percussion winners would have been much closer to winning ensemble music. One of those two! Oh well, really not a big deal. Just something I noticed.
  5. Phantom wins GE Music and Ensemble Music, but gets absolutely blasted in Brass and Percussion (percussion not so surprising)? The Brass score shocked me.....SCV on top by 1.5! after being ahead of them pretty solidly all season? If you read the back of the sheets for ensemble music and compare it with brass and percussion, it's hard to imagine one group winning ensemble, and that same group getting crushed in BOTH of the other music captions. Thoughts? Just a weird show? Not a perfect system, of course. It just looks like from the sheets that people were witnessing different shows out there!
  6. Let's get even more specific! I love details!!!!! I agree with the people who've chosen Crown over Madison. From the videos I've seen (haven't seen them in person), I think Crown's show will beat Madison now and also at Finals. While Madison's show is ###### and exciting, and it's awesome that they are back - I think Crown tips the scale over Madison in these areas and will win because of them: Body movement/usage - a lot more creativity with body in Crown. Brass blend/quality of sound Percussion As far as the 5 captions are concerned, I see it breaking down like this: Crown over Madison in GE visual between .5 and 1 point. Crown over Madison in GE music, barely. .1 or .2 Crown over Madison in Ensemble Visual by about .5 Crown over Madison in Ensemble Music between .5 and 1 point Crown over Madison in percussion by a few tenths. Also, look for the spread to be bigger between Crown's Rep/Content versus Madison's, where as the Tech/Excellence will be much closer. I only say this because I believe Crown has more going on in their program this year. I won't do exact numbers, but I say Crown wins by about 2 points. Ah, heck. Let's do numbers: Crown 78.3 Madison 76.5
  7. Ha! You're probably right. I also could see quicker feet/different drill/higher demand in: 1) The low brass/mellis during the trumpet fanfare at the beginning of the Verdi doing some double time to provide some contrast behind the trumpets. 2) At the end of Verdi, something different happening with that form. 3) Shortening that "sun" set after the ballad to set up the next tune- for now, I call that section "crickets". 4) After the Contra -> Melli -> Euph -> Trumpet feature is over, the drill up until the end of that tune leaves me feeling "blah" It seems to all take place between the side 2 40 and 50 for over a minute, and packed in pretty tight. One of my favorite shows in the last 10 years is Faust in 2006, because I thought they did a great job taking the white uniforms and spreading them out/removing that "clustered" effect that can come from all that white. They used so much of the field in 2006! Overall, in 2011, portions of the show, especially in this tune mentioned here, the horn line seems stacked on top of each other. For what it's worth, the intro and ballad in 2011, field usage-wise, reminds me of 2006 a lot more than the other parts of the show. Anyway, go Phantom!
  8. Visual Performance judge sending a message to Phantom Regiment...only corps of the night with a higher number on the top of the sheet. This early in the season, that's very rare. These little things make staffs lose hair! Ugh! Yes, I know why this happened (based on seeing the shows) and no, I don't really care that it did (unless changes aren't made). I love PR anyway. I just thought it was interesting. Visual Performance: (Vocab/Excellence) Cadets: 8.1/7.7 BD: 7.9/7.8 Phantom: 7.7/7.9 SCV: 7.5/7.2 BK: 7.3/7.0 Mandarins: 6.9/6.6 Pacific Crest: 6.7/6.4
