Been a long time since I was here. What's new?

yea.... :( sad, sad, stories.

The Northmen was a merger but that word never "sat" well back then. The Greece Cadets broke away from the Patriots back then leaving the Patriots in a rebuilding phase (hard times for them). In 1984 the Firebirds and the Greece Cadets came together to form The Northmen. 84 and 85 were hot years for this group and there was a lot of talk of them becoming Division 1. Unfortunately in 86 there there was a falling out during the winter with "Corky" and things started to fall apart. In early spring of 86 there was a "kind of" merger with Avant Garde. This was a hot time too because the show was being written and learned in about 6 weeks for the 86 season. Unfortunately again the cooperation didn't work out and the Northmen side pulled out in early May of that year. This killed any chance of either group going out so DCI lost 2 NY corps in one shot. Very sad days. :( There was so much potential and talent...and it all disappeared that year forever....

So now I'm a rookie again, when did that happen?

I really should be more careful with the term "old school". I know when I hear it from someone else it can come off the wrong way to me as well. I didn't mean to imply that corps past were old school. Certainly Garfield has always been to my knowledge a professionally operated organization with a strong tradition and sound philosophy. This is true of many organizations still in operation and for many that faded away.

It's hard to believe that this kind of thing is still going on. It really is old school to do this kind of thing and I'm not necessarily referring to drum corps specifically but in any educational setting. Military ethics serve a purpose in the military but in drum corps or any other educational setting it has no value. I'm not suggesting that corps become a hug-fest but corporal punishment, either physical or verbal, is pointless. Treating members as professionals is key: they will respond the way they are regarded. I didn't catch which corps this was going on in but either the director is unaware of this going on or is unwilling to do anything about it. If the later is true get your kid out of there! He'll just learn to hate drum corps! It could also be potentially dangerous! The legal implications are almost definately fatal for this corps and it will enjoy a short life span if it continues to embrace this kind of philosophy.

I have Sibelius 2 but I never use it. I've been using Finale for 15 years and it's essential functionality hasn't changed much in all that time so it's hard to switch to something new. Sibelius has it's own way of doing things and while I don't have a problem with this I just don't have the time to learn something new. Compatability is also an issue. I've imported Finale files into Sibelius and this works ok but you still have to mess around with things to get it right and this means more time again. Nothing against Sibelius. I'm sure they are developing their own following and that they will be successful. So, it might be more economical to purchase a new sound card rather than upgrade my Finale?

Does anyone have Finale 2005 yet? It boasts realistic marching percussion samples. I don't know if it's more worth it to get a sound card that can deal with sound fonts or to just go ahead and buy 2005. I don't see a lot more in 2005 vs what I have, 2003, except this feature. I haven't used sound fonts before either so I don't know if I'll be able to do what I need to do, burn them as parts on a listening cd. Any suggestions? I need realistic samples that I can use a midi-to-wav application to record and burn full ensemble and individual parts for my drumline. Thanks! B)

When you consider the dynamics of a drumline (I'll say snareline right now, basses would be totally different) the answers become more clear. You mentioned the end guys having greater drill responsibilities. This is true. The snareline doesn't spend a lot of time moving directly forward and backward (except in high school bands) so the dress is rarely at the center. The end guys set the pace and the line has to trust them without question. Without trust someone's gonna get hurt so if the line doesn't trust the end guys, get 'em outta there. Musically the center guy becomes the audible "conductor" but this isn't always the case, depends on side to side situations. Usually this is the case thus the compulsory "listen in". The center guy must lead the line musically in most cases otherwise the line loses cohesiveness and lacks an assertive musical character. If you were asking if the end guys are as "good" as center guys then I'd have to ask what your definition of good or equal are? Really, this is a team effort and lines that take on the philosophy of "the center guy is best" are both disabling themselves and giving the end guys permission to be "leakers".

That depends...what version did you download? I'm using Finale 2003 at the moment, still considering 2004.

Judging is always a matter of perspective. The less defined that perspective the less objective the outcome. The tick system was an attempt to provide the most objective outcomes but it lacked musical sensibility. This of course was creatively too restrictive and that stunts growth...which leads to certain death. Defining subjective requirements and allowing judges make decisions based on those requirements is really the best way to both provide objective outcomes. The weakness with this approach is found when too many requirements are placed upon one judge or caption. It seemed that for the longest time judging was not changing quickly enough. Now its changed so much I'm not certain it's the corps' or activities best interests that are behind their development. But this is another topic..... Doing away with percussion as a caption I have always believed to be a mistake. A Music or ensemble judge seems fair enough in concept but I don't always have that much confidence in those that have never held a pair of sticks. Yes, musicality should be paramount BUT in a subjectively based system non-percussionist judges can make unenlightened decisions. I as a percussionist could also make similar mistakes with a brass section. My philosophy for judging is simple: one should not judge what one has not done. As for where a single percussion judge should be placed I'd say on the field since Music and Ensemble judges will cover musicality from the box. If only one judge is possible (and I don't think even this is a fair option, there should be at least 2) then lines should be judged upon technical merit only. This eliminates any musical or ensemble comments of course. I'm almost tempted to say it's better to not have any if restricted to only one since this is such a narrow perspective. Why only one? Money? If so, then you get what you pay for and that's too bad. :(
