  1. they switched to Bb in 2001.... i think the biggest problem is finances, i dont think there is any corps out there that afford to have a set of horns keyed for every genre music a corps might play over there years but this topic has definitely brought up some good points.
  2. From marching experience in both yamaha and dynasty lines, its hard to say which line is better than the other as they both have their strengths and weaknesses. i will say that the xeno is by far the best marching trumpet available right now. i'm not a mello player so i'll leave that up for mello people to decide but i've heard that the dynasty mellos tend to blare or sound krass in the upper dynamic levels. As far as baritone, the yamaha baris have weak valve action, perhaps do to the guide, but i cant say. I will say that the dynasty baris have far superior valve action however the yamaha baris sound a hundred times better. Dynasty euphs are significantly better than the yamaha euphs just as far as sound quality goes. I would also say that the dynasty contras, while a lot heavier, sound a lot better than the yamahas. I think kanstul made the best G lines ever made but their Bb's are not nearly as dominant as their g's were. As far as king, they sound pretty good but i think they look kinda awkward, especially the euphs and contras. What does all this really mean, i'm really not sure, but the only thing that really matters is the player himself.
  3. i never really played on small bores till i started marching drumcorps, unfortunately dynasty baris are still small bore but the yahama baris are large bore which is pretty nice.
  4. I've used blue magic for the past three years. I find blue magic easier to use, especially on tour, plus blue magic looks a TON better than wrights. Like some one mentioned earlier, you can sort of "floss" the valve casings and tubes with tshirt strips along with using old t shirts to polish larger surfaces like the bell. Joe, i used blue magic on my dynasty euph for two years and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you use something before the sweat starts to corrode the metal. The black sploches are the early warning signs, and then it'll expose the brass. I bought a few bottles of blue magic a while ago so i still have the thicker substance, i have noticed the new runny bottles which look to be a pain but i've never tried one yet.
  5. the basic melody is 1,5,3, 6,7,8 but the chord structure is: I + V + III which is a basic I chord by the third measure, then its VI second inversion, VII second inversion, I root position.
  6. lol, PERFECT balance between the top and bottom is preferable. ok, so on topic, what each corps is doing is perfectly functional for their show and the style of music they play. I am personally a fan of a lot of low (contra and euph) such as pr and scv. I have also heard that there will be baris and scv this year.
  7. very true, i've had so many different ideas layed out in front of me, many of which were conflicting. Routines are like diets, for the most part, they all work. Some will work better for you but the important thing is to stick to it. i know this has almost nothing to do with the topic so my apologies, btw, euphonibone what etudes are u playing at ur audition?
  8. '93 star, everybody knows this one '96 phantom, when the build the chord from the sops, before the final statement '99 vanguard, last chord of the ballad before blue shades '02 cavies, when the drums cut out at the end of the ballad
  9. I like the tone that yamahas have, i think the intonation of a horn is for the most part, the responsibility of the player, although the horn can help and that is kanstul's strengths. I like the sound of the kings, but if you ask me they look a little funny, the contras and euphs anyways. I think the kanstul G bari was the best G bari ever made but DEG has made alot more inovations in their horns in the past couple years, especially compared to kanstul.
  10. just to add to that, u should try doing remingtons without the valves on every partial, i'm not sure what it helps but i know it helps something on ur overall sound
