    BD 2012 exuded excellence.

There isn't a theme a corps has done that isn't pretentious and silly even if it happens to be your personal favorite.  It's all just marching band that takes itself way too seriously.  People in crowds who try to make their opinion known to people around them are even more pretentious and silly.  Real weirdos.  Your opinion isn't that special no matter how many fellow weirdos get onboard with you.

Every finals I went to there have been people like that.  Every adult rolls their eyes and tries to ignore them.

    Amen Brother!

Say it louder for the people in the back!

BD definitely on several occasions. not so much others. VK of course universally loved. but BD 08-13 was generally under loved by many fans period, and Allentown was no exception. At least as i could tell there was no serious hostility like booing ( except maybe when scores announced), but the standing at the end was people strecthing or getting up to leave, and not because the shows wowed them. Feilliniesque was like the BD reactions of years gone by ( aka 80's and 90's)

Oh boy! This forum from 2008-2013. For us BD fans, it was like the 300 against the Persians.

    Good times.

The ABBD/Cali corps animosity in Allentown was real, at least in the 70s-90s. The Crossmen and Cadets fans in the early days had a real chip on their shoulders because they felt BD and SCV would just come onto their turf and try to show them up.

It seems to be the opposite out here in California.

When we get Midwest/East Coast corps come out here, we treat them like rock stars as we are so appreciative that they made the trip out west.

I dunno that I saw outright 'not cheering for them' but a mixture of 'hometown homerism' and 'unfamiliarity with their show' could be read that way.

I remember shows in Indiana we went to when we were kids, the midwest corps had their fans and alumni that would cheer louder for their homerisms, but recognized the performance levels and cheered for those moments from the West corps too.  This like mid 80s to early 90s.  I recall Tommy getting a somewhat tepid response in 1990 in Ft. Wayne. But the general buzz was more "the Blue Devils came and we didn't get jazz?" sort of disappointment than any hostility about being the Blue Devils

Annapolis has been my go to as of late and BD hasn't done that show when I've gone.  It's a Cadets show and crowd for the most part historically.  SCV got lots of praise in 2016 with Force of Nature.  This year Mandarins sort of caught them all off guard.  I don't think a lot of the crowd were 'flo watchers' and had no idea what was coming.  So there wasn't much buzz taking the field.  But by "Take me to Church" there were people grooving in the stands with them.  And the spinners got an "oh my god...this is insane...i can't belive they're doing this" reaction around me and nods of appreciation as to what they were seeing.

But nothing like when Cadets came on of course and they were roaring and buzzing for their own.

Yea that's in line with what my son said.

He said initially the crowd seemed to be sitting on their hands, but by the end, the crowd was on their feet. Almost as if the Mandarins earned their respect and approval.

Allentown gave it a rousing ovation, at a time when the crowd there was continuously blasted as being ABBD

Outside of finals this past summer, I have never attended a DCI show east of the Mississippi River. Was there any truth to crowds back east purposely not rooting for BD or corps from out west in general?

2014 should be in consideration by fans  as one of DCI’s most entertaining Top 12’s of all time. It was a great year.

1992 and 1989 are probably in the conversation of being the benchmark years for most entertaining Top 12.  2008 comes close, as the Top 7 that year were on fire at Finals. But 2014 in my opinion is the most entertaining 12th place to 1st of  the 21st century.

As 2014 relates to the Blue Devils, I think of I where they came from in the two shows prior to Fellinisque, and what was missing. 2012 and 2013, although brilliant in terms of the visual and music along with execution, were not shows that ultimately were embraced by a large audience. Universal love, less likely.

You can sense the fresh approach BD took in 2014, and in hindsight, see how their designers must have set out to start of a new era. They seemed to get back to a showmanship approach that could really connect to the audience. They have Gordon Goodwin create a piece for them. They add in more  broadway tunes, specifically from Chicago. And ultimately the overall show with its style and story of a film being created from start to finish, brings back a theme that an audience can relate to. And to innovate by building  the show organically, piece by piece…. What you may start out with in June, becomes layer upon Iayer of new ideas as tour progresses. This became, I think, the greatest innovation of that show.

The same could be said for their competition that year. Carolina Crown, SCV, Phantom, and of course, Bluecoats, equally impressing by adding electronics to their show in a way we had never seen before.

2014 was a year many corps were shifting into a new identity. But doing so in a very entertaining way.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think Gordon Goodwin's son marched with BD I think 2014-2015???

My impression was that the chemistry that corps had was unsurpassed, in the sense of everyone buying in completely to the concept and the staff and MMs figuring out how to perform both as a single organism and as individuals empowered and with the responsibility to create specific characters and personal moments within the larger show context. While MM technical skills might be argued to have improved over the last decade, that chemistry is always the gold standard for any corps.

    Well said brother!

Darn you! I saw this late and had to rewatch Felliniesque (again) and stayed up too late. A sublime show and such a high standard of performance. I can see how some visual skills and aspects have advanced in the activity over the past 10 years but remembering back to what it was for its time, it was breathtaking then and still is today. I almost cried seeing the last 2 of their performances on finals night knowing I would never again see it live. It was that beautiful and special for me.

I only saw them twice that year, in Glendora and Riverside in late June when the show was still bare bones. Never in my life have i heard so many Oohs and Ahhs from a crowd. All of us in attendance, I don't think we knew at that moment we was witnessing greatness.

The fact that we hadn't even made it to Independence Day, and the season was over regarding who would win was just insane.

Felliniesque live in person was something to behold.

    Yeah, that was rough.

And 2000 was my favorite top 3 I ever saw live at finals.  Went to 98,99,00, and 07...thanks again for that, @JohnD!.  That top 3 in 2000 was a riot.  The only other top 3 that compares for me is 93, and I never got to see any of those corps live, just on the PBS broadcast.

Unfortunately for me, 2023 was my first DCI Finals, so that would be my favorite top three live lol.

But if I was able to add my favorite regardless of live viewing or not, I gotta go with 2003.

    BD- Phenomenon of Cool

    Cavies- Spin Cycle

    Cadets- My Favorite Things

That's a filthy top three that I would put up against any year.

Their movement was breathtaking to watch live at finals, and we're talking about a top 2 that was also cooking pretty good with the Cadets and Cavies.

Cadets and Cavies were amazing! I think the top 12 in 2000 as a whole is a very underrated.

What's interesting is as much as the Cadets and Cavies were slaying it, looking at the finals recaps, BD was going blow for blow with the both of them, including taking a couple of captions, and some 2nd's in other captions. It was the 6th place finish in drums that did them in. No doubt the "Incident" played a part in that. There is no way BDs drummers weren't shaken up and affected by that.

I’m sure most posters will place Crown fourth (or lower) in the predictions thread. But I’ll be honest and say last season was significantly more enjoyable for me because I tuned all that stuff out for the most part. I can only speak for myself but obsessing over scores, placements and spreads kinda kills the fun.

4th place in the annual predictions thread is reserved for BD.
