  1. I will always root for my little corner of the continent - we've had a rough go at it this past decade!  I'm glad to see Cascades on the field & I applaud each & every member for their passion, strength, & tenacity!!  At the end of the day, your placement is not a reflection on you, but of the need for change at the very very top.  For the members, be proud of all you do & know we support you!!  #206

With respect to judging, is it San Antonio when penalties can start to be assessed?  I cannot help but believe that behind the scenes there has to be talk about the harmonica.  It has been questioned here as well.  The potential exists that, through tapes and critiques, they are being "encouraged" to explore other options?  "If" the judging community is being pressured from within, or externally, will San Antonio be the test?

Just musing on a Sunday morning...................

If a keytar & cello were allowed, why not a harmonica?

Just heard from one of the members....they're sitting on the buses with the AC cranking and hydrating.  He said today was a challenging rehearsal temp wise but they hydrated constantly and "pushed through".

It's so strange to be on the flip-side!  BAC fan for life!!

while the scores where announced we were expecting BD to win by a full 2 points... and we have no bias here... we're fans of the southern corps of the 80's,, however, we were surprised Boston didn't own 2nd place.    Kids want to join BD not just for winning... it's an incredible experience and anyway.. who would fault a kid shooting for the best experience and biggest challenge....

The "best experience" and "biggest challenge" is defined by each individual member.  Some would actually disagree that BD is that for them.  For many, it's less about the win, I agree.  What does that corps, the membership, the staff, the experience say to you?  If that doesn't feel like home, it's not for you.  Our son found his home elsewhere & stayed there, by choice & happily.  He is proud to have marched to his corps despite being able to move up.  It was about more than rings and winning, and it always will be.

As I have said every season around this time—quoting the great basketball coach Eddie Fogler, when asked if officials are biased:

“Every official knows who is supposed to win.”

Of course the judges are biased. All people are.

Sticking with the sports theme: No matter what rules you want to make, some members will have an inherent advantage. You can change the college basketball recruiting rules a thousand ways to Sunday—Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke and Kansas are still going to dominate.

Winning in any competitive scenario involves having more and better resources than your opponents. BD has more and better resources than every one of their competitors and it’s not really very close. Therefore competition also isn’t very close.

When they start alternating who gets to practice at the indoor colts field, priority equipment truck parking, etc. I will start believing that favoritism doesn't exist.  The minute the Troopers, Colts, & Academy are allowed the same access as Crown, BD, Bloo, I will buy it.  Until that point, there is no telling me politics doesn't play a HUGE part in ALL of this.  For better or worse, right here right now.

  5. Bloo is still playing.

I LOVED the Alumni Corps, but we are still waiting for the Age-Out ceremony and scores.  After the Hall of Fame awards plus this plus Alumni, now the blended corps...it feels a little long IMO.  I was jumping up and down for that alumni corps though!!!

I don't have a problem with it, but if we could not do it all at once I think it would create a better impact.

  6. Percussion is interesting tonight.  When the same judge is judging multiple nights in a row, he is going to build expectations and call them as he sees them.  Last night, he liked what he saw from BAC.  Tonight, not so much - SCV brings home percussion.

This could be a major factor in this caption at Finals.  Consistency will be key!

Very true. If BD does take home silver, we can look forward to 2023 with excitement as BD fans.

The five times BD lost since 2008, they won the following seasons, and four of those seasons were undefeated, 1930, Cabaret Voltaire, Felliniesque and Metamorph. Ghostlight was the only champion that didn't go unbeaten.

If BAC slays the BD dragon.............for 2023 I am pushing all my chips to the middle for BD.

So why even watch anymore?  If this corps has it perfectly figured out with perfect execution and no one can beat them, why do any of it?  I know Drum Corps builds a ton of other beneficial traits, but at that point, why not consider another model?  It loses it's luster if the same team wins constantly. Hence the reason the superbowl winners get the worst draft pick.

As I said on the other thread, to date Boston has been very effective in minimizing the risk of covid to the membersr.  I think with 2 weeks to go, Chris Holland doesn't want to take any chances. It isn't just the competitive piece. either.  As an attorney, he is fully aware of his responsibilities "in loco parentis"....he legally is the parent of 165 young people.   I fully support his decision.

He and the leadership are doing a great job ❤️
