Fair question. i am a Yankees fan. They get a lot of hate, or they DID get a lot of hate, because they won so much. Won, as in past tense, as they are abysmal right now. They weren’t an “innovative” baseball team. They just won a lot and had big names. i am a Dolphins fan, which means i have spent the better part of the last 20 years hating the Patriots. They weren’t innovative. They had a VERY predictable coach and a huge talent at QB. success breeds contempt. LOTS of people hate BD JUST because they win. A lot. IF BD designs to the sheets, Bluecoats could do that. BAC seems to be doing some of that now. Crown could, too. But if they decide they don’t want to do that, that doesn’t mean BD is wrong to do so.

I get that you aren’t hating on the kids. And i DO get your points. I may even agree with SOME of them. But i go back to the point i made a few days ago. If i had a winning formula, and the kids who work so hard benefit from that. i would ride that formula until it stopped winning.

You can honestly say that last year’s show lacked artistry? Use of props over the last few years lacked innovation? Did someone have strings on the field before Ghostlight, because I don’t remember seeing that.

I asked a question earlier that went unanswered: why should BD take ANY risks if they keep winning? Everyone else you mentioned HAS to take some risks or try something new to try and beat them. Pretentious TITLES? Seriously? and, btw, last year’s props were BLUE and white. And this year they are all different colors. 😉

As a life long BD fan, I can identify elements over the last several years that could be considered by some as rinse and repeat. Interestingly, when other corps do this, they are lauded for respecting tradition or for incorporating a moment from the past into the present. I guess it all depends on your perspective.

kids go to BD to experience the program and to improve their odds of winning a ring. The BD staff has an obligation to provide them with the best chance to do that. But you want them to take risks which, if they don’t pan out, could cause their reputation to take a hit and their membership numbers to decline going forward? When the judges stop rewarding their shows, they will regroup and adapt. Until then, i don’t blame them one bit for sticking to a winning formula. And i LOVE that their shows have been bright and uplifting. I get enough darkness in the real world.

Maybe the best part about being a clueless fan is that I don’t get all wound up about how things are scored. I don’t care about the scores nearly as much as placement. My ONLY thought about scoring is that i am grateful that fan reaction doesn’t factor in, or at least it doesn’t factor in MUCH! I am so sick of going to shows where a whole block of spectators will flood empty seats for ONE performance, scream bloody murder throughout the entire show, and then leave when the corps is finished. Basing a score on audience response would just make those occurrences even more obnoxious.

I was worried about Cappy… he’s been quiet.

Someone posted somewhere that they are actually “cut outs” of old uniforms, in keeping with the theme. They literally cut apart pieces from the last few years costumes and put them together. If true (and that is so very Scott Chandler!), it makes sense that they seem so familiar.

I’m not sure what is going on here? I have read every post, and i fail to see where anyone got blasted for saying they didn’t like what we have seen so far from BD? Differences of opinion, sure. I enjoy reading passionate commentary from people who take the time to speak their mind. And i saw push-back on a comment that a passing of the torch may be imminent. But certainly nothing disrespectful or worthy of such hurt feelings, in my opinion. i have seen videos of a couple of other 2023 corps, and have read reviews, and i HIGHLY disagree with some of the commentary, but i chalk it up to differences of taste. I saw some things in the BD video that didn’t hit with me, but i am convinced that that will mostly resolve itself by Indy. As Karuna pointed out, BD shows evolve organically, and what we see today will likely be wildly different in 6 weeks. And, if not, i will accept it, like i accepted the unresolved chord at the end of last year’s opener (which STILL bugs me!) i am a BD honk but i DO like, sometimes even love, other shows. And if someone else’s show wows me, i will LIGHT the torch.

I have a family member closely associated with another top tier corps. Every year she says “this is OUR year”. And then she sees the BD and realizes it isn’t going to be quite that easy! Gracious, she always says “looks like we will have to bring our A game, again!”

And they still have a lot of holes in the drill.

Every color on every dot or cut out is put in a specific place for effect. Scott Chandler has a great eye for the artistic and avant garde. He knows how the bodies will move and chooses fabrics, and cuts to allow and enhance the movements. I love that they always find a way to incorporate the legendary blue. or maybe my edible just kicked in…
