  1. I'm extremely biased here (i'm a big fan of BD during the 90s), so i would go with the BD video - but the 89 DVD is something you could definitely not go wrong with. i'm not as much of a star fan as some people on here, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
  2. ironic that these two were posted right next to each other..
  3. i think cavaliers would have won, but i would definitely prefer listening/watching cadets 05 over cavies 02.
  4. grand finals - at least it was last year.
  5. i was actually referring to all of the show, or a vast majority of the show. sorry you misinterpreted my post.
  6. i thought it was until SCV 87, actually. i thought that was shown on the PBS broadcast from 87..
  7. though i didn't say this, i think there is a certain amount of truth in this statement. cavies' drill is harder than everyone else's, but i don't think it's so much harder like people seem it make it out to be. michael gaines' knows how to make great use out of contrary motion, creating a greater amount of velocity then there might necessarily be. other drill designers tend not to use contrary motion as much -- that doesn't necessarily mean that they are less effective drill writers, just that they have a different style. i think the best example of this is BD - they're hauling ### all over the place, but because of the way their drill is composed, it doesn't look like it's that fast. when you have two people doing a pass through at a 6 to 5, it's going to look harder/faster than people moving on one direction (or not directly opposite directions) at a 4 to 5. to summarize this in one sentence: cavies drill is harder, but not that much harder.
  8. yeah, i must say that the extraordinary events ECJ went through last year at finals and having a home crowd this year at finals definitely made finals week more exciting/emotional... i wasn't almost crying this year like i was last year as i came off the field, but i was at retreat.
  9. haha, i've only heard it... but, yeah... no, i don't listen to it very much. i'm hoping the finals recording is as good as it felt on the field. last year's final performance probably wasn't the best brass performance we had, but i felt like it was the best recording from an excitement/energy perspective, so i think it was the best one that could've gone on the recording.
  10. maybe if more than half the hornline was playing, i'd be impressed. anyway... i think star 91 is one of the hardest visual programs to date - they were playing their ##### off the whole time they were doing some crazy ####. i don't know, i just watched it again - it really impressed me.
  11. star 91. just watched again for the first time in awhile... i think the drill is better than cavies 02. and they actually played (extremely well - on 2-valve Gs, no less) while they were marching like crazy. i think it could make a run at frameworks.
  12. neither cheerleading nor drum corps are sports. i think if you say one is, the other must be as well. oh, and if drum corps is a sport, then marching band is definitely a sport.
  13. Scouts' Shows I consider more Exciting than 04-05: 1975, 78, 81, 83, 87, 88, 89, 91-03. I think 03 was their best show since 99.
  14. or the new scouts that never got me off of my seat in 05? i mean, back in the mid-90s, when scouts were at their crowd-pleasing peak, their shows were like one gigantic exclamation point -- there was no way you could not be entertained on some level by that corps... to me, their 05 show seemed (to extend the punctuation metaphor) more like a question mark. or maybe an ellipsis. it really just didn't impress me all that much. when they hit their last form i was like "oh, that's cool... wait, why are they not moving any more... why is the drum major turning around to the audience. no, this can't be the end of the show, can it? there's got to be more" unfortunately, there wasn't. i think there's been a marked change in the show-design philosophy of the scouts under the new management. i can't say that i particularly like it.
  15. i hear helen keller had a pretty good recording of it.
  16. let me just restate (as the original poster), that i personally do not think crown is the new version of star. i didn't start this thread to try to promote that opinion. i started this thread because i had read other people in other threads saying they thought that crown was the new star and had seen relatively little discussion of that point. i created this thread with the hopes of finding if there were other people out there that agreed with me, or if there was a majority that thought crown was the new star. so before you start saying this is the "worst thread ever", please try and understand where i'm coming from.
  17. Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.
  18. yeah, actually, now that you mention it, i saw them from the side at one show, and they looked like they were having a lot of fun. i loved the cymbals doing cartwheels as they marched off.
  19. really? i didn't think that show was that difficult. ####-clean? yes. difficult? i didn't think so.
  20. I figured since we hadn't had one of those threads where we can all brag about how good our corps is. So, which show did you enjoy most this year? I'm from ECJ - I didn't really get to see many other corps this year, so I'm going to reserve my judgment for when I get the DVDs. But people that did see other corps' show - who'd you like the most?
  21. if only they could've looked good while doing it - their upper bodies were terrible that year... bleh. but yes, the drill is pretty amazing.
  22. cavies 02 - sorry, but this one takes the cake cadets 98 - a close second star 91 - could be second? cadets 00 - i just think it deserves to be on the list somewhere.
  23. yeah, i agree with you there. i was saying that star did that from 90-93, not that crown was doing that currently. not sure if you misunderstood me or just meant something else. and yes, i can understand how star FMM's could be offended by this. like i said, i don't think that crown is the next star, but other people do -- i'm just trying to get some discussion going on the topic.
