  2. Well, first and foremost, it comes down to the players preference...this I concede. However, your facts are not true on pricing. The best price I can find for a stock Bach 37 is $1465. Kanstul signature line are out there new for less than one hundred more than that ($1525). It is not my intent to argue with you, I just want the facts to be represented correctly. Also, if you compare prices of Getzen's higher quality trumpets, which are fine horns, the prices are in the same ball park, if not more. Pax,
  3. I went from alto sax to bari sax to tuba and then to trumpet (and here I'll stay). I'd be happy to speak with you at length off board, as there is so much to speak of. There's no reason to limit yourself to third part, though. Shoot me an email or pm and let the learning begin!!
  4. I choose Kanstul throughout the line. I don't think the prices are what is biting Kanstul in the ###, it's the fact that they don't manufacture percussion instruments to pair with their horns. Look at all the companies getting all the horn business now: Dynasty (Dynasty Drums), Yamaha (Yamaha Drums), King Brass (they're UMI...so I don't know who that ties in with?).....you see the point, though. The main push behind the switch to Bb instruments is strictly economics. The corps are getting a financial advantage, so they are switching. They're getting stuff for free or or they're getting it for dirt cheap. People who say the switch is to make it easier for the kids marching is insulting everyone who ever marched on a G horn. If you're to stupid to make the transition from Bb to G, then you don't deserve a spot, anyway. Kanstul's Bb marching brass is priced higher than Dynasty, this is true. In my opinion, they make a better horn, however, and the price is worth it. Look at how many years Kanstul were superior bugles to Dynasty, but Kanstul prices were cheaper (this is still the case, mind you). By the way, Ed, the prices you are quoting for Kanstul trumpets ($2000) may be the factory price, but they can be bought for up to $500 less elsewhere. They make the best Bb trumpets for the money right now, in my opinion. I've owned 3 Kanstul Bb trumpets and they have all been excellent horns....one of which is the best Bb I've ever played. When I am in the market for a new horn, I will look Kanstul first, always.
  5. Yeah, me too. We opened for him and came out at the end to play through the finale with him. One of the highlights of my trumpet playing life. He had the stomach flu and I hit a note that he missed. So what he was old and had the stomach flu...he is the reason I play trumpet!
  6. My tuba playing days ended in high school and we used sousaphones. My first year of Junior Corps I played Contra and the only negative to it is standing at attention. If you want to practice, get a 40 lb. bag of dog food and hold it out in front of you while standing at attention....it's great fun. It'll hurt your shoulder for a while, but you'll get used to it.
  7. Kanstul already does. Unfortunately, Kanstul doesn't make ####ty drums to give out for free with their horns, as does DyNASTY. Kanstul horns are BY FAR the best brass out there, whether you prefer to play bugles or their conventional instruments. They are also not only affordable, but an exceptional value, considering the level of instrument that you get. DyNASTY makes a far inferior horn (bugle or conventional) and charges more for it...and idiot bandcorps directors line up for their crap....all for the kickbacks. Sickening. I played one Dynasty sop, and I couldn't stand it...it made my throat hurt, it was simply WAY to constrictive. When I marched Crown I had to play on a regular Kanstul sop, but when I marched with CorpsVets I bought a couple of powerbores (one for me, one for the wife). Since I sold those when I left CV; I've got a brand new one since I'm playing again.
  8. That's the "all note tuning" mechanism that seperates the M2000 from the other model, the M501. For what it's worth, after all my Dynasty bashing, I have a 3 valve Mello on the way (in G, of course). The mellophone is the only bugle thing they do worth half a crap. :)
  9. I agree, performing again in drum corps will be great. It's only been 4 years for me, and I'm going nuts. I look forward to mini corps a lot more than to what's going on now (parades). While I like reunion groups, it's not as much fun when everyone else is from the same era and area and you aren't. I'd rather have everyone on the same page (like mini corps of field corps). Can't wait to hear about the Dynasty. Chip
  10. I would have to say at that price, give it a try. While it is a Dynasty (read: piece of crap) Horn, you may end up pleasantly surprised. I had a Dynasty trumpet that BD used their first year of being a band (was that 99 or 00?) and to be fair, it played pretty well. I used it only one year in a marching ensemble, and playing lead, it was not stuffy like their sopranos are. I can't wait to see you guys this summer!
  11. Kanstul Powerbore is the best soprano around. Period. If you are looking for a marching type trumpet, while I'm sure Wayne and Jeff provided valuable insight, it's still a Dynasty, man. Check out the Kanstul COL103...if it's anything like the LBP470 (the previous marching trumpet by Kanstul and suspiciously very Wild Thing like....for MUCH less!!) then it is another great Kanstul horn. (and the alto bugle you're selling STILL isn't a mellophone) :)
  12. Ever notice how most of the word Dynasty is NASTY? I don't think this is an accident. I think it's a rare case of truth in advertising.
  13. I boil mine, then use a bore brush to clean out the piece and boil it again.
  14. Turn your horn upside down. The leadpipe is bent that way so that the slide you see on the bottom of the horn can move freely.
