  1. Hey, Rob! Doin good, man! Thanks for posting those pics of the Kilts. Where did you get those? Excellent quality.
  2. As you say, "Uncle Z is at it again" :) During "Slaughter," I'm the tenor on the left end, closest to the snares. During the second half of the show, I'm generally on the far right. As for the tamborine player during "MacPark," he is my best drum corps bud. Too bad he played that thing cuz you couldn't hear it anyway with the hornline blowing their assess off. As for D. Tippet, yep, he is in that sop trio at the end (I think behind Metzger, or just to the left--I'll look at it again).
  3. That is actually 1974--pic taken during "God Bless the Child"
  4. Cavalier's bass drum beat coming on and off the field, "Iowa" (Larry McCormick classic!).
  5. Rich, excellent choices. I would add the following from SCV: "Procession of the Nobles," 1970 "Glob Playhouse from Henry V," 1971 (the first minute of that piece still gives me chills)
  6. I voted 2-7. Honorable mention to the Anaheim Kingsmen, who aren't on the list.
  7. So true, Rich. I couldn't have said it any better. :)
  8. Wow! We could right a book on local yoko stories. I have some, but nothing like what you just described. As an aside from drum corps, I just recently found a bullet hole in the engine hood of my car! I live in Miami and apparently some idiot decided to pop a few .22 cal rounds in the air during News Years--in a populated area, mind you! I live in a nice, quiet residently area and some genius nearby thought bullets shot into the air somehow levitate. Cops told me stuff like that happens every year on New Years--officers are told to get in their vehicles, or indoors at the stroke of midnight, Jan. 1. Well, luckily I was away from my car at that moment. . . . Okay, back to topic. Ditto to that. I'll buy the first round!
  9. Yeah, I understand that the north drums were heavy, almost like carrying tymps? This is great! Our marching careers are strikingly similar. I played tymps in 1972, '73, and '74 before moving to tenors in '75.^OO^ Will do!
  10. Hey Rich, On the '76 DVD, where are you in the north line? right end? I know Rob is second from the left.
  11. Thank you LancerLegend and I return the warm handshake and tip my hat to you and the great 2-7 corps. You guys were awesome. I listen to "Crown Imperial" alot from 1975-76. I'm glad you were able to participate in the '94 alumni corps. Unfortunately, I wasn't at DCI that year to take it in first hand. The crowd response says it all how much the drum corps community misses 2-7. I saw the recent video of the history of the 27th Lancers by one of your fellow members--very moving piece. As for drums, no I haven't had much experience on quads. I aged out in 1977 and instructed a couple of years after. I was done with drum corps after the 1980 season and didn't have many opportunities to immerse myself in quads. I would have loved to, though. Rust and old age hasn't helped matters, lol.
  12. I was mistakenly crowned the 1976 tenor champ--I did win in 1977. Because of a judging error, Rob McMillan from BD was denied the award that evening in '76--I finished 2nd. The judges mistakenly put Rob's tenor sheets among the snare contestants!!!! Unbelievable! It was as the military says, FUBAR! Rob and I reversed positions in 1977. The interesting thing, I first heard rumors about this error during DCI finals week in 1977, but nothing corroborative at that time, or since. DCI never informed me of the error. This past summer (aided by the internet and e-mail), this event came to the surface and the facts Rob provided were undeniable: he won in 1976. And, he was rightly given the awards ceromony denied him nearly thirty years ago this past summer in Denver. We've been in correspondence since last year and get along great. In fact, through Rob's initiative, we're co-sponsoring award scholarships for future DCI I&E tenor winners. So, ultimately, good came out of this sad affair.
  13. Rich, if we had have won with those things I'd probably feel differently about them. But, they symbolize a difficult season--they bring back painful memories. The pic was taken in mid-July in Madison after we returned from the California tour. We were in transition between the "Disco Show" and "1975 Redux." The snares had just gotten new chrome drums and the tenor line was still awaiting news tenors. By the way, I'm the tenor second from the right.
  14. IMO, one week, or one month would not have changed the outcome. And, BD's 2-point spread at finals was still a good margin of victory (though we did close it somewhat compared to where we were a week before). "1975 Redux" didn't have the same magic the previous season. . . For chrissakes the friggin hornline was phasing at the beginning of "MacPark."! And, "Stars and Stripes" was a real let down compared to "Slaughter on 10th Ave": it sounded pedestrian compared to "Slaughter" in '75. The bottom line: our season sucked! We got what we deserved.
  15. Here is a color pic of those drums from the '76 disco show (tenors)
  16. We called those things "the jelly beans." We got rid of them also when we did the show change.
  17. I can identify with Paul's frustration to some extent. I've always felt that what happened to '72 SCV parallelled what happened to the '74 Scouts. In '74, we had the upper hand over SCV most of the season, only to lose to them at finals because of a semi-flat performance. But, heck, that is the way it goes and its what makes competitive drum corps exciting. As the old saying goes, "on any given night."
  18. 1974 Anaheim Kingsmen 1975 Madison Scouts 1976 Blue Devils
  19. Possibly. I think if we had a product in the beginning, the '76 Scouts would have been more competitive with BD. We just didn't have our act together program wise.
  20. Yes, we did a funky disco dance thing during "Pick Up the Pieces" (I think it was just the snare line). Get this, . . . during the winter of 1975-1976, the staff suggested that we wear knickerbocker pants and disco loafers I don't know what they were smoking but thankfully sanity intervened.
  21. Indeed it was awful. I didn't think a show like that was possible.
