  1. On the money, Fran!!! I was once told that Steve's is the best kept secret in Bergen County. It's on 17 SOUTH, not far from the Post. And you can always ask for the sauce on the side, as I do. I've eaten there many times over the last 20years or so and it has never disappointed me or family/friends. Only problem, they DO NOT take reservations. As an alternative, there is also the Meadowlands Diner just a short distance south of there, also on Rt 17. Haven't had a bad meal there either. Both restaurants also have a bar, if you enjoy a cocktail before dining! Either one would be a good choice! Ray
  2. Though small in stature, Don Quinn was a GIANT among snare drummers. He got his start with St. Anselm's Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps in the Bronx. He then went on to the New York Skyliners in 1958. During his competing years, he won numerous individual titles around the tri-state area of NY, NJ and CT. He taught many junior corps drummers for quite a few years and many of his students went on to become members of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Playing under Eric Perrilloux's tutelage, he was a sponge for Eric's techniques and arranging style, which he then passed on to hundreds, if not thousands, of beginning and some accomplished drummers as well. He also judged many drum corps shows in the NE for many years and was very much respected. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Chief Petty Officer with over 20 years on active duty. Much of that time was also spent as a member of the Skyliners drum line. He drummed a few years with the Skyliners Alumni corps, before moving from his home in New Haven to Rochester, NY to be near his daughters and grandchildren. His health had been failing these last few years, but, tough old bird that he was, he fought the good fight. Funeral arrangements are still being worked out, but he will be buried in his Navy Dress Blues, sometime late next week, with full military honors in the National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY, next to his son, Kevin, who died in infancy some 40 years ago. Don was also a member of Garbarina-Mazarakos Post #1523 of the American Legion. I will post the viewing and funeral details when I get them from his wife, Kathy. Sincere condolences to Kathy, his daughters, Gina and Janis, his sons-in-law, his grandchildren and his entire family. Rest in Peace, my good friend. You will be missed very much. Ray
  3. That was Henry Staab from Hilton, NY, an alumnus of the field corps and a featured soloist with the Alumni Corps. There is a photo posted somewhere of him and his horn in the stands with the crowd from Sky Alumni at pre-lims.
  4. T'would appear that our Queen has abdicated!!!! I hope all is well Nanci.
  5. They would be Ken and Dee Burbulak. Great folks!!!
  6. Sonny Cataneo wrote an arrangement for the Staten Island Thunderbirds in '64. When one of our guys ( Claude Suthard Jr.)went to BSGK in '65, his Dad suggested that number to the BS staff and they thought it could work for them also. Turns out it worked for both corps.
  7. I'm back from vacay. Here's my calling card. Never tried to post photos, no scanner. Oh well.
  8. I know Cabs do a fine job, BUT, let's see how nimble you are when you hit your 60s or higher. There are a lot of members in all the alumni corps whose "wheels" don't always work as well as we'd like them to, but the hands and lips are still in very serviceable condition. Not everyone can perform a full drill that's up to everyone's expectations, but most can still play. And besides all that, I don't recall anyone ever telling us that they paid the admission price just to see us(Skyliners) march!!! They want to be blown back in their seats. All the corps try to incorporate some motion in their show, but a full show is not always in the cards. Unfortunately, it is what it is and that's just fine with the performers. Between the ears, we ALL feel like teenagers once again, until the back, the legs, etc. start barking. Be patient, your time is coming and you'll understand completely!
  9. Broadway Joe was definitely one of the good guys and will be sorely missed by all. Very glad to see him back in a Sky uniform and performing with the corps before his very untimely passing. R.I.P. Angelo. Too many have been passing lately. sigh.
  10. Let's not forget the late, great Pat McCue and Sol Anthony either!
  11. Hello, hello! Is this thing on???? Eerily quiet here. BTW, I got nothin' to post anyway.
  12. And, contrary to popular belief, Lefty and Cos were NOT the worst of enemies. They were, in fact, the best of friends and had lunch together once a week for many years. Hey, even friends have a difference of opinion every now and then.
  13. Thank you for expressing all of our feelings so well, Andy. I'll be with you in spirit. Ray
  14. And if our Queen was around, I'm certain she would schedule Mr. Peashey for a public flogging for "premature evaluation"!
  15. Definitely not, but it does look like she "Love's" it. Speaking of church sponsored corps, how many knew that Blessed Sac was going to include a Dick Burns arrangement of "Love For Sale" in their show one year and Bishop Garner put the kibosh on it? Apparently it was too controversial for a corps sponsored by the church. Ya think???
  16. Oh I check in here every day. Haven't posted since I had nothing to contribute. Still wondering where Eddie Reese has gone. I can understand Ray Fallon's leaving, since I was also contemplating the same thing. Still very disappointed over "The Don" ban, but I do keep in touch with him. I haven't seen the person who is rumored to have caused all the grief on here either. Oh well. I'll jump in when I can offer something of substance. BTW, I hear that Guido ( Jim Cossetti) is once again sidelined with illness. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Miss ya Jimmy!
  17. Just to let folks know, the New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame is open for nominations. If you know someone who you think merits inclusion in the NJDCHoF for their contributions to NEW JERSEY drum corps, then go to our website at njdrumcorps.org, click on Nominations and print out the forms. Write out your nomination and give details on the specifics for your nominee and send it in to the committee for consideration. The Induction Dinner will be held in October, BUT the nominations will close in only a few months. So get those nominations in to the committee as soon as possible, like NOW, if you can. Thank you.

  19. Never really left, Glenn. Lurked but didn't post for a long time since I was extremely PO'd re: The Don's treatment and still am, but that was not directed at MOST of the residents of Whoville . BTW, haven't seen Ed Reese on here in a dog's age. Where/why is he hiding? EDDIE, make your presence known!!!
  20. Not certain of the location. I did not get to attend as many shows as you would think. Could be Symphony Hall, but Andy is right. Those look like the solid white snare drums they used prior to the '65 Premiers. Had the white MoP in mid '68 and then went to the chrome Ludwigs in '71. Tenors used the white ones in '65, then in '69 and '70 had the use of PAL's old silver sparkle Ludwigs ( right Andy?) and then went over to the white MoPs in ;71. The entire line went all chrome in '75 with the dual snare lines. As for the posting, my guess as to the year would be just as good as anyone else's. Clear as mud!
  21. The McCue brothers, Pat and Dennis, and Terry Paige marched here and I think there was a Butch Anderson connection too.
  22. Yes, it has been languishing for a bit. BUT, there are REASONS for it, not excuses. Our hostess, Nanci, has been dealing with some very demanding family health issues and has not been able to be here to pose "Guess Who" questions for us as often as she'd like. If the residents of "Whoville" can accept this situation, then so can those who drop in here every now and then. Let's show a little compassion and understanding. These are very trying times for Nanci and her Mom and our prayers and good wishes go out to both of them. And also to The DON and Bonnie.
