If this whole staff comes back, oh boy are we in for a treat. Estudillo and Hartwell on visual, JD with brass, the new guard and percussion staffs that are showing a lot of promise. I’m excited at the possibilities that could be in Phantom’s future.

Agreed. I think back in the top 5 next year is pretty definite and beyond that is up to how much turnover there is in MM's and staff. I know a lot of folks were disappointed a bit in 2021 being non-scored year and a lot was floated about cost vs ROI. But if you're going to put it out there, Harmonic Journey might have been the best recruiting tool anyone could hope for. It was a brilliant seed to plant in young fans minds and really should start to fully bare it's fruit of influence in 2024.

2022 was a good, solid show. I think it was the hingepin year where PR realized that they could use props effectively (like the top 6 have for a number of years) and the gods would NOT in fact rain down hell on earth for breaking tradition. But it was tentative. Now we take that experience and add some more pieces unto playing the game in 2023 and how about that 'ish????....you cats are a fully modernized drum corps ready to take on the world!

It takes time, faith and a willingness to lose it all to cut against the grain and reinvent yourself. PR has done that. Now they have a vehicle. Next year you won't have as many student drivers at the wheel of that vehicle. Experience leads to championships.

I really love this corps. Well done PR. You should be proud.

From what I understand, and I don’t understand crap about drums, there were a couple of minor and uncharacteristic breaks that pulled the percussion score down … fix those and their score should pop back up.

Yep. Lots more fuzz than usual and some weirdness with some cold attacks mostly in the snares. I feel like the tenors have marched two super clean shows in a row.

For several years the Regiment has been lagging behind in the Percussion sub caption. They have to find a way to improve this in the upcoming years. Visually I thought they are doing great! A marked improvement over the last several years. Love this show no matter where they finish and believe the future is bright for them.

Agreed. And in a year where the top 4 lines are SO close, you can't rely on being a one trick pony. Rennick writes great books, so the content should be there unless they've done some watering to clean it up. The content is NOT the same level as the top 4 lines, but you have to match your talent level.

Also, I still feel like the FE needs another season to gel. It's better than last year in regard to listening front to back but there's still some hair on that biscuit. The flat line is pretty solid and will just need to drum together. Maybe some them will get to all play together in WGI. That's a huge advantage in my book. Bass line sounds great.

Apart from the percussion, I feel like the guard work was solid. Recoveries seemed pretty quick on the few misses I saw. The biggest thing I can really say stands out is just the feet. They're in time but look dirty in certain places. I'm sure the change of style will solidify in the coming seasons.

Whether 5th or 7th, the MM's, staff and volunteers deserve our thanks and praise for a hell of a year. I don't usually say the SUTA thing because I feel like that's for PR's marching family (my personal opinion and no judgement on anyone else intended or implied,) but da*m it, SUTA! You cats are awesome and I dig ya' with all my heart.

Best of luck and I'm proud to at least be a fan. Remember these days ladies and gentlemen of PR. Leave it all on the field. Dare to be excellent. Don't take no for an answer and be proud of what you and your corps family have accomplished. I can tell you from at least my personal experience, it stays with you your whole life.

    Thank You Phantom Regiment

    Eric

Honestly, I think they should pull the capes off the uniforms and do a full uniform run through to see if the visual cleans up.  I mean at this point why not look at it?

I actually think that's a great idea. The capes aren't ADDING anything to the GE score so why not. I really feel like it's going to take a season to get the feet right as well. Even though I don't look for it (because lord KNOWS that I am NOT the one to judge dirty feet I'm DCI) I see some feet phasing.

  5. I know this is an odd question, but does anyone know how many returning vets PR had in their battery and FE? They're getting cleaner but they don't seem as comfortable physically as I have seen in the past and I think it comes through on how the battery and FE book plays. Granted this is just my opinion but it does seem to align with the scores.

I will say that the flat line technique looks far more natural this year though.

I want to feel this way but I have mixed feelings. All of the top 12 corps are getting better and better and if phantom is to remain relevant they are going to need to dial it up. This year is miles ahead of last years show, but they may place 1 position higher, or the same placement with the cavaliers closing in. Doesn’t that leave them right where they started?

You make these dramatic changes to impact not so much season 1, as you do effect season 2, 3 and onwards. You have to build the foundation before you build the house. This is a new foundation. Next you build the house and that will take a few seasons. Then add in some old family PR decorations and suddenly you're in the game again.

I said it after show #1 and I'll say it again. Top 7 makes me happy with such huge changes in design. 2 or 3 seasons more after that and we'll see how strong the product is. Give it time for the foundation to dry before you start worrying about framing the house.

Not like PR is asking people to do the yell there.

That’s just a fan addition. I don’t mind it, any audience engagement is good

Oh I know Cappy. And I don't dislike that the fans do it 99.9% of the time. Heck, throw babies, toss beach balls (I miss the beach balls.) In THAT moment, It was just kinda....meh. Again, it's a me thing and certainly shouldn't color anyone else's perception.

I guess they are going to live or die with that ending. I guess we'll know in 2 weeks.

That company front though. The timing last night was just perfect. I am gonna say though....the SUTA yell at the music gap right before that first step off of the company front was a bit annoying. Maybe it's just because I'm not an alumni of PR. I dunno.

I’ve seen a LOT of guard drops in every group. Wondering if the heat is making their hands slippery?

I'm not a guard person but from my own, possibly ignorant view, the weapons and flag work of most of the top 12 corps this year seems to be much more difficult. The bar seems to have been raised in every single caption. Maybe someone who knows guard stuff will chime in?

Just watched Atlanta and it reminded me how much you’re missing not seeing it live like we did last night. Nothing compares. I hate showing friends a video and saying, “This is nothing like it is is live.” They’re always, like, yeah, right.

It was great live. The sound was REALLY REALLY big last night. The timing felt better in some of the odd meter stuff that the front is doing and the battery tuning was better. Just like with Bloo, more drops in the guard than I noticed before but this is my first time seeing it live. Well deserved score. ❤️

to go from standstill to performance in 24 hours is remarkable. Tough group, and I like where they are right now. Sounds like 15 seconds cost them .4 points. Btw, that was first full run of show since MONDAY. Wow.

Yep. .4 would have put them at 92.375. I dig the changes. I felt like live, I saw a LOT more drops from the guard and some little ticky tacky things from the battery balance. MUCH better ending. I yelled a lot. It was joyful.

How was the ensemble rehearsal overall?

I will send you the schedule for tomorrow when my son gives it to me in the morning.

Ensemble sounded GREAT. That hornline has some powerrrr. Battery sounded a little wet but that's what black max heads due when it's super hot and humid. FE sounds great and reads well back to front. Some really nice visual moments in the closer that are MUCH cleaner than they were when I saw them last. They're diffinately kocking on the door for 6th maybe with PR. I need to really watch the show a few times in a row to pick up on some of the more nuanced stuff. Soloists sounded great, trombone feature sounded solid if not a little under mic'd. The FE was teased to Jesus so it overwhelmed a bit if you are right on the 50.

Overall I dig it. You could tell these cats had a long day in the Tennessee heat. But the last run was full of energy. They should be proud. I congratulated the staff as well. Very nice corps.

Annnnddddd.....I got to see some of my SoA friends ❤️

Your son is bad###. The good news is with all the screaming as they take off their robes, you probably did not hear the swearing that he had to have been doing.

Heading to UTC in a few minutes. Does anyone know if they are in the main stadium?
