  1. Hi everyone! I am part of a new marching band program in the Black Hills of South Dakota and am in charge of the guard. This is my first time running a guard and am in the process of purchasing equipment. I grew up using 5.5' fiberglass but have been getting the impression that the standard nowadays is for field shows to use 6' aluminum. My dilemma is I will be having students from 6th grade through 12th grade. I am unsure as to whether the 6th graders could hanlde 6' or if I should have two different pole lengths or just go short all around. Anyone here have experience with an age range like this? I am also wondering what everyone likes to do for rehearsals. We will be meeting an hour a week after school this spring, hours will change in summer, not sure to what yet. Does anyone have a favorite routine they follow at rehearsals? I'm particularily interested in how long you spend on warm-up/strength training/technique/choreography and what your favorite warm-up routine is? I am a bit overwhelmed but have some VERY enthusiastic students that should make things fun. Any and all tips or advice would be appreciated! -Patrisha

  3. SouthSong is a grassroots, all-age drum and bugle corps based in the Northeast Alabama/Southeast Tennessee/Northwest Georgia region. Our surplus proceeds will be going to low income, at risk music programs and those in the process of rebuilding across the area, as Alabama(particularly) has been cutting band programs for financial reasons for the last several years. We are hosting auditions March 1, 2015 at Northeast Alabama Community College in Rainsville, AL at 12pm CST. We are hopeful for a great turnout and an exciting journey for this area seeing its first ever DCA Corps. You may find our facebook page at www.facebook.com/SouthSongMusic Our show this year is entitled, "Death Metal Symphony," which feature the clashing duality of classical symphony and heavy metal rock as these genres duke it out for the prize of getting to finish the show. We are excited to bring our own taste of the South to DCA and hope to show the world of DCA what Alabama musicians are made of! Best of luck to all DCA Corps this year, and we wish you all the best of luck with your season!

  6. Action Wipes all natural wet wipes is doing a sale for the new year, 20% off with code "FEST2015" This product is really useful for members and spectators all year round, for after rehearsals or at shows. Wet wipes that use all natural ingredients and can be repurposed later on after wash, smell great and don't leave a sticky residue like most baby wipes. Wish I had these when I was marching. http://actionwipes.com/
  7. I'm a junior, and most of my college choices are in or around the Chicago area (Northwestern, UChicago, Loyola) so I was thinking I'd audition for corps closer to there, like Colts or Phantom Regiment (but not this year). The thing is, I really wanted to do winter guard as well, and Northwestern doesn't have a winter guard anymore. I'd rather join a well-established organization but the problem is that there aren't any Independent Open or World guards in Chicago anymore. Phantom Regiment seemed to be a good choice but it doesn't look like they've been a functioning winter guard since 2007. I can't find any information on why it folded a second time and I'd like to know. They weren't bad or anything so why would they fold? It beats me. Brownie points if you can tell me of another guard that would be somewhat close to commute to if I were to go to a school in Chicago.
  8. November 25, 2014. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ Open House this past weekend was a tremendous success, and an exciting beginning for the corps’ 70th Anniversary season. After the Skyliners’ return to the field of DCA Competition last season, the corps is looking forward to continued growth and more opportunities to entertain its stalwart fans and alumni. Scott Carey, Brass Caption Head, assisted by Ryan Lamoreux, Assistant Brass Caption Head, led the brass instruction, supported by the 2015 Brass Staff. After warm-ups, the horn line worked through the beginning of “It Better Be Tonight”, from their 2015 show “Whatever Lola Wants.” Although composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, the Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. Percussion Caption Head Tom Siegfried and Percussion Arranger Eric Boylan, together with the Percussion staff, led the Percussion line through percussion warm-ups. They also embarked on music for “It Better Be Tonight”. The color guard members in attendance were led by Michele Fadden, Color Guard Caption Head, and the Color Guard Staff. They stretched, danced, spun and did jazz runs. Throughout the day Andrew Hayward, Visual Caption Head, and the Visual Staff visited each section to help focus on visual basics during sectionals. The Skyliners unveiled a new uniform for the 2015 season to the attendees of the Open House. SKY OPEN HOUSE VIDEO REPORT - http://youtu.be/1OsHCYo0PBQ The Skyliners thank everyone who attended today, everyone who helped set up or clean up for the Open House, those who baked or cooked, or helped in many ways to make it such a success. 10. Hi, We are a music and arts educational program in Baltimore City, MD and we are searching for a guard instructor. As we continue to grow we have moved to a larger facility and we are looking for a guard instructor to help us with the continued growth of our program. We have a great team, great facility and equipment to begin with. All we are missing is you! WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Persons with a clean record (no convictions of sexual offense.) Experience with teaching youth groups ages 13 to 22 is preferable. We are open to giving a chance to those looking to get into the field for the first time. Prior marching experience is required, and drum corps experience is a plus, but no teaching experience is required. You must be a team player who is patient and takes the initiative. You must be interested in assisting us with furthering the development of our program to a statewide color guard and marching band program. The ideal person will need to be enthusiastic, works well with youth, and loves everything there is to love about color guard, marching band, and drum corps activities. You will be responsible for teaching a range of experience levels (mostly beginners), creating routines, and working towards developing a color guard within the marching band and developing a winter guard program. The ideal person should understand that our primary goals are to 1) provide positive life-changing educational experiences for our members, 2) entertain our audiences, at football games, parades to band competitions, and 3) promote the traditions & culture of the marching arts. *The ideal person should be comfortable working with a student ‘Field Staff’, which consists of Drum Majors & Section Leaders. The ability to motivate others to grown as leaders is essential. Experience with drum corps, winter guard and/or marching band is ideal though we are open to similar type experiences. Please list any experience in the following areas: rifle, saber, flag, choreography, dance/movement, gymnastics, makeup and hair, special effects, drama/theater, and costume design.
