Seneca Optimists

Recommended Posts

Well Kelly - not entirely off track since you (along with a number of other girls) were remarkable Seneca Optimists via St. John's who showed up in Seneca with that incredible St. John's work ethic, willing to do anything asked of them without attitude and always with that killer sense of humour that was a staple of being in St. John's. It was a great marriage of corps members (no pun intended). It worked well because I remember most Seneca kids were from pretty tough backgrounds as were the girls in St. John's and with that came this dogged determination to "let's do it". I so loved teaching you guys and have the battle scars to prove it.

Couldn't agree with you more. It was a great summer of fun, learning, travelling and being with a great bunch of people. I think we all have some war wounds - I know I hit Sean Williams one time in the opener....

In 1976 I remember all the anticipation around the first show of the season and I was in the stands in Philadelphia when the corps went on for DCI prelims. What a rush that was. I didn't think at the time that I would ever be a part of it. When the other girls left St. John's in 1977 I would have loved to have gone with them. However St. John's was going through a really good transition and my loyalties were in Brantford.

Looking back I'm really glad that I broke up with that stupid guy that weekend in April ' 78 and came out to rehearsal. It certainly put my life on a new (and better) course.

Kelly

ps you say 'It was a great marriage of corps members (no pun intended).' but it's interesting the number of relationships that developed, and in some cases remain today, between members of the two corps.

Yes, definitely worth brownie points!

However I'd like to remind everyone that the original discussion was about Seneca Optimists. Keith must be wondering what happened to that.....

I have another story.......

In 1978 there were reports of a 'flock' of Seneca Optimists flying up the Don Valley Parkway followed by a 'flying' equipment truck.

The actual story: One Saturday in 1978 at the beginning of the season we had a show at Seneca College.

Kelly

I grew up near Don Valley (central) and we practised at Seneca College (north). I think the Optimists practised near the lake (south). Visited friends in Scarborough (east) and visited Terri in Etobicoke (west). and that mooning thing, buses passing each other on the highway, well. We all competed against each other and then played and marched together but...we had alot of fun. Good memories and thanks.

Wasn't "GE Butt" the judging sheets used? Execution was not worth as many points.

GEe, Keith, that was over 30 years ago. That caption doesn't exist anymore. Simply cordial greetings amongst familiar people.

I've been perusing the photos trying to recognize people I knew and I must state, Seneca Optimists had nice uniforms.

Thanks - I always thought so!

Funny you should post just then, we were listening to Chuck Mangione "Chase the Clouds Away" and saying what a great tune it was - you wouldn't be familiar with that tune, would you???

Sorry, back to Seneca. "Sorcerer and the Latin" - another great tune.

Clouds? Legend? Wheren't there a few more such toons floating around back when? I was always partial to the Freelancer's Bellavia.

If I remember correctly, Kingston Grenadiers (DCA) were going to play a Chuck show last year but they didn't make it out to the field. Too bad from a number of perspectives, not the least of which would be having a new generation exposed to Chuck in Drum Corps. When was the last time anyone played one of his tunes?

Agreed on Bellavia, same year they played "Adventures in Time". Their staff had a great talent for picking music. I loved their opener "Emmanuel" sometime in the early '80s......

But again, we digress. Sorry.... :guinesssmilie:
