scottgordon
I wonder about the reverse. I too think that is a far more interesting question. Obviously, previous years' shows would do poorly because they would be perceived by the judges as dated. But how would this year's BD show place in, say, 1987 -- not counting the penalties for electronics? I think it would still score high, but nowhere near winning, because the meaning of GE and specific performance expectations were different in 1987 than they are today. I also wonder if folks in 1987 saw what drumcorps was to become, which of the following would happen: (1) the future would arrive sooner, or (2) steps would be taken to keep it from happening? Otowndrumin
I'll have to rewatch it, but I don't remember the music being as compelling/difficult as this year's, nor do I remember the drill being harder (though it was impeccably clean). I can't say I got to watch it live, though, since 2003 was my first year watching drum corps (coincidentally, the first show I ever saw was a BD/Cavies showdown). I think seeing it live makes a difference. However, you can clearly see how freakishly clean that show was. That was also back when the Cavies horn line staff had a much different approach than they do now. Not that it is/was bad or good. Just saying it was the peak of that style for them. No one could top them that year. I think most would even go as far as to say that 2002 show might be the best of the past 10 years. Cadets in 05 would be a close 2nd. Cavies in 01 and 03 were steps below 2002. 007 in 04 was good, but got was a close call.. BD was right there. This year is the first year, they've had a championship quality show in the past 3-4 years.
EllmerFUDD
...and it doesn't even have to be only champions, I suppose. I'm just curious to see what others think about this topic. Where would the "Top 5 Most Legendary Shows" fall? Could any corps from 1972-2007 be crowned champion based on the way shows are judged today (not to mention the intense competition within the Top 12, this year in particular)? In terms of recent years, I think Cadets '05 still stands up pretty well, as does Cavies '02. I can't really convince myself that any show prior to 2002 could win it all today... ...MAYBE Star '93... Thoughts? This might be the dumbest thread ever on DCP
