TrainWreck
Good confirmation, I thought SCV prior to Gail's passing ONLY played CLowns after Pacific Procession and Finals and only if they won. They typically played Clowns at PP and Finals in the early 80's from what I recall. I do know they played Send In the Clowns at Precision West in 82 prior to leaving on tour (I have it on video). This was Blue Devils home show and the last show in California that year.
mobrien
As I said, I'm one in about 10 million who did not like SCV's show. I'm okay with that. I'm also in the 'meh' camp on the '87 show design, primarily because of the retread aspects of the book and the cheesiness of some of the design elements. Garfield's relatively spare approach to Copland still strikes me as a thoroughly modern program, where, to my taste, Vanguard's '87 show belongs on "I Love the 80s - Drum Corps Edition", along with pornstaches on the Madison guard and Regiment's magenta head scarves. supersop
Vanguard's '87 show belongs on "I Love the 80s - Drum Corps Edition", along with pornstaches on the Madison guard and Regiment's magenta head scarves. That's a bit over the top in the harsh category. That was a great corps and a great show ... fully worthy of winning even if the design approach was very different from Garfield's. I always said it was the best old school design ever put on the field ... to that point, I think my statement is fair. Pornstaches .... really? tommytimp
Plus, magenta was pretty on trend for the 80s, as were Alliance's color combos. (As was the purple cadet style we adopted in the middle of the decade.) So calling that stuff out seems a little dumb...kind of like "I Love the 80s" is anyway. So there you go. Vanguard 87's show was state of the art, and the drumline was WAY ahead of the game.
