Why does this happen?

Recommended Posts

Take a look at glassmens recaps of regionals and then individual shows head to head. The percussion (that got a 17.3 last night beating BK and madison) is never near these groups at a regional. In the hint for the final spot they beat the others in percussion at those shows but always behind at the regional.

Why do you think that is?

I've always thought the pit ensemble should be judged separately from the drums.

Maybe all the brass sections should be judged separately also? One judge for trumpets, mellos, baris/euphs and tubas?

That way a judge only has to concentrate on a few people, rather that on the whole brass line, or not have to run between the drums and the ensemble.

An example would be have each brass section get a possible of 100 pts, in .1 increments, then add all 4 of those up and divide by 10. Phantom Trumpets could get a 90.5, and maybe Bluecoats Trumpets will get a 90.1 , and so on. This way, the judges have a bigger scale to work with. Add those scores (by all 4 brass judges), divide by 10, and you get your brass score.

Then of course you add those with the percussion scores and the Music Ensemble scores and divide by 3, and you get your Music score.

Or they could do it the current system, but let the judges give out scores in .05 increments instead of .1. That would give them a bigger scale too.

Maybe they don't have to have all those extra judges for every contest, but maybe for the regionals and for Finals they could. That would mean a lot of green shirts running around on the field, but a lot of times the sections are separated from each other and you can stand on the sideline and listen.

And maybe the judges shouldn't have to hand in a scorecard immediately after the performance? Maybe they should let them hang onto them, so that after the competition they can go back and assess things, and rank them better. A judge should be allowed all the tools and time needed to hand in as accurate a scorecard as possible.

If they are going to give out arbitrary scores that mean nothing except for spreads, then at least let them have the opportunity to do a better job of that.

Why do you think that is [that Glassmen's percussion score better smaller shows]

I think it's because at FirstBEAT, Glassmen and BK went up back to back and the judge could legitimately compare them. In Atlanta, Glassmen went on 84 minutes earlier followed by Troopers AND an intermission before BK went on. That said, in percussion at least, Glassmen's percussion still outdid Madison (which went on five corps and 90 minutes after BK) in Atlanta.
