MetalTones2012
I was wondering what the rules on instrument keys are in Drum Corps Japan and Drum Corps Europe. Are corps still required to use G bugles in those circuits?
InspaDave
Member corps of Drum Corps Japan are still in G. DCJ does have an Any Key division at its championship. The participants in that group includes high schools, as well as independent units. One of the independents is an elementary school-age group that would blow you away. HornsUp
The Euro circuits have been multi-key since their inception. Many units were crossovers from the band world, and were allowed to use their existing brass. At the same time (later 70s-early 80s) 3-valved G bugles were legal. Euro corps were completely chromatic nearly a decade before the DCI corps came around. Edited December 7, 2011 by HornsUp
Scatfish
In the UK its mostly Bb/F but there are a small group of corps that still use Gs.
4181jay
It's interesting to know that since it's formation 10 years ago DCE has allowed any instrument, any key, including woodwinds. Now it allows amplified guitars and synths too. I'd have gone years ago if Corps took to using woodwinds on a large scale, but they didn't so I've had many great weekends at DCE finals This year may be my last as I don't really get the electronic thing. If their use is widespread, I'll be gone.
